Paul, I'd get a ticket in Virginia for driving without shoes. I do that all the time in the summer.

I rarely drive with shoes but I do keep my Birkenstocks down where my feet go just in case. If I get stopped I could always pop my feet into the Birkenstocks to stay out of trouble. If I forget to put them on I could always tell the officer I just took them off when he stopped me. I hate lying, but I hate driving with shoes on, too.

I know what you mean Melissa, Its not right to lie to them about it. I guess you could keep them handy where you could slide your feet into them quickly if you were stopped.

Virignia didn't prohibit barefoot driving in 1994. I doubt that they prohibit barefoot driving now. The other post about Virignia requiring shoes was an archaic law that's probably no longer enforced.
DONALD E. WILLIAMS WILLIAM H. LEIGHTY COMMISSIONER DEPUTY COMMISSIONER COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA Department of Motor Vehicles MAIL ADDRESS 2300 West Broad Street P. O. BOX 27412 RICHMOND, VIRGINIA 23269-0001

Dear Mr. Heimbaugh:
Thank you for your letter dated May 27, 1994 regarding the legality of driving barefoot in the State of Virginia.
At this time, the Commonwealth of Virginia has no law(s) restricting citizens from driving while barefoot.

I agree it's best to be honest with the police. If they stopped me while I was driving barefoot, I would just stay that way. If I reached down to put on shoes, that would make them suspicious and they might think I was hiding alcohol or a gun or something. Then they will likely want to search me and the car.
On one of those Cop TV shows, they showed a young woman in a minivan on vacation around the Colorado area who got stopped by state troopers on the highway for a random check. They asked her to get out of the car. She was barefoot and they said nothing about it. They searched her car briefly and let her go on her way.

Paul good point about reaching down if stopped by cops.
In the past when I've been stopped by a cop, I kept my hands visible and when I went to get my registration in the glove compartment, I told him what I was doing.
Thanks for the update on VA laws regarding driving barefoot.

Ladies & Gentlemen (off topic - sorry, Kevin), If a police officer wants to search your car and does not have either probable cause or a warrant, you don't have to let them/him.

Good point IrishRed, you may attract attention to yourself reaching down, they may think your trying to hide something.

two things, first if a police officer is approaching your vehicle and you are bearfooted DO NOT reach down to put on your shoes, the officer only see that you are reaching down, he may think you are reaching for a weapon! and if a police officer stops you for any reason they have the right to search with in your reach if they suspect you are dangerous or might have a weapon, it all ways best to cooperate fully with the man with the gun!

That's true. If they ask you to step out of the car, you don't have to. If they order you to, then you have to.
I don't think police care about someone driving barefoot. They are interested in more important things, such as if you are carrying contraband or weapons or some other illegal item.

Speaking of driving barefoot, does anyone know if it is illegal to drive nude in an enclosed vehicle? I've heard that in some places the police don't do anything as long as you are in the vehicle and not exposing yourself to the public. The closest I've done to that is driving shirtless and barefoot. You nudists need to help me out on this one. I'm just a barefooter. :o)
