Jim,
I showed your comment to my doctor friends and they said that any such report is absolute bunk, lacking even the common sense test. How in the world could adding all the poisons found in second hand smoke be healthier for one's lungs? Kind of like taking arsenic because it gives you that warm glowing look.

I am also a smoker in Tennessee and have thought a few times about quitting and may eventually but the point is this. I am just simply sick and tired of the governments dictating how we should live, what we have to do & what we cannot do I will most likely die from all the hot air our goofy politicians are spewing out. If it's not the tobacco or alcohol that kills us it'll be the stupid ill-conceived taxes.

Naturist58,
I understand what you are saying and I don't think anyone likes the government involved in our lives. The problem is that smoking has a serious, very negative impact on everyone, smokers and non-smokers. According to the AMA over 54% of the people in the hospital, on any given day, are there due to smoking. A doctor friend of mine says its actually closer to 80%. If that is the case just think how much that impacts on everyone's, not just smokers, health care costs. Smoking also has a negative impact on the workforce and productivity. Second hand smoke does cause illnesses in non-smokers. The list goes on and on.
Unfortunately for those people addicted to nicotine, there is an overwhelming societal benefit to limiting and discouraging smoking. I don't believe smoking should be banned but I do believe that smokers should be required to pay a substantial amount of society's smoking costs. Why should I be required to support a smoker's addiction?

Bare Warrior, I have never been convinced that smoking or not doing so is the real reason for the rising cost of healthcare or anything else. It is all about money and how to get as much as possible without working for it. We live in a society of litigation, unions, etc. The unions are forever seeking to provide its members with more and more benefits that cost consumers more, lawyers are forever advertising services to sue drug companies, asbestos manufacturers, etc. These companies that do lose legal cases and have to payout huge sums of money then pass on these costs to consumers. It's a never-ending cycle. Being sick is just a part of being human. We are all born with the ability to make choices but we don't have the rights to force our choices and decisions on everyone else who does not like the choices we make. I have never entered the space of a group of non-smokers and lit up so I could interfere and annoy people to whom smoking would have been an irritant but, conversely, non-smokers have no problems entering the space of a group of smokers and telling everyone to put out the butts because it's bothering "me". Using your logic that would be like taxing s**** because it caused an unwanted pregnancy. Eventually, we are all going to die and there's no way around it so why can't we simply live and let live for the time we do have. Everything we put in our bodies and digest eventually comes out or causes some form of illness. Who do we blame when we develop Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, Colon Cancer, Prostate Cancer, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Heart Disease, etc.

Cheri, As usual, you, like most people, only read as much as you feel reflects personal ideals. No one can convince me that smoking causes Heart Disease or High Blood Pressure any more or less than the emissions we breathe or the foods we ingest with all the pesticides, preservatives and processing that goes into making sure we eat 'healthy'. Smoking, to me, is just a convenient excuse politicians and others use to force their will on everyone. I believe a persons lifespan is a genetic predisposition. How else can you explain why it is that some people who have never smoked die at 35 or 40 while others who have smoked 30-40 years live to be 70 or 80. Some people born with congenitive heart defects are quite likely to pass this abnormality on to their offspring which will shorten their lives. Again, using your logic, are we going to yank business licenses from McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys, Dairy Queen because we choose to patronize them knowing the products they sell are high in cholesterol & fat content, etc. As I said, anytime someone feels they need a few extra bucks they spill coffee on themselves, rush off to see a lawyer and then sue McDonalds for serving them hot coffee. McDonalds loses money & then pass these costs onto everyone else in the form of higher over-the-counter foods. It's a vicious, never-ending cycle that's not likely to cease anytime soon. I've been driving 49 years (18 of which included commercial vehicles) and have never had a wreck with my car but yet the law requires me to carry insurance just IN CASE someone else is careless. We have to carry homeowners insurance in case our home burns to the ground but also to protect us in case someone decides they need some extra money, enters our property uninvited, breaks their leg, sues us & tells us we should have had a fence up. Think about it!!

naturist58, I have been in the medical field for a VERY long time and currently work in the Research office of a School of Medicine. I have first hand knowledge as well since when I first met my husband, he was a smoker and had high blood pressure. When he quit smoking, his bp became normal. My mother was a heavy smoker all of her life causing her to have prematuare babies as well as ensuring her to have cardiovascular disease and peripheral vascular disease.
There are MANY MANY clinical studies that have been done proving smoking DOES cause heart disease and other ailments. Have you ever seen lung tissue of a life-long smoker?! I have. Cheri

Cheri, No I have never seen the tissues of lungs nor have I seen the tissues of the Breast, Cervix, Ovaries, Prostate, Colon, Testicles etc. Are you suggesting those types of Cancer are the direct result of smoking or second-hand smoke. Should we be expected to pay higher insurance premiums because people get illnesses they have no control over & cannot afford to pay for. Who do you suggest I blame & sue if I get Testicular Cancer or my wife gets Cervical Cancer. Who do you suppose pays for the medical expenses & hospitalization of the illegal aliens in this country. Certainly not them. I hope I don't sound like I'm beating a dead horse because I am interested in your opinions & simply expressing mine.

naturist58, I mentioned high blood pressure and heart disease only plus lung disease. Some of the cancers you mentioned can be a result of smoking. I'm not suggesting anything. Cheri

Cheri, Ok, I think I've taken enough time on this issue and will try to move on. All I am trying to say is that I really believe we are paying our bureaucrats WAY too much money to dictate how we live our lives. naturist58

Naturist58,
There is so, so much information out there on this subject that has nothing to do with politics. I fear that the only reason you refuse to believe very sound facts is simply that you don't want too and you have created rationalizations to justify your behavior. Your nicotine addiction probably has a lot to do with that. The cigarette companies have spent millions of dollars researching and modifying their products to ensure you remain hooked. Why doesn't that piss you off?
Take care and I hope one day you stop letting nicotine control your life.

I was surprised to observe so many nudists smoke. Prior to visiting my first resort I assumed (wrongly) that nudists would tend to smoke less because I figured most adopted healthy lifestyles of fitness and exercise. Now, before we visit anywhere we ask about their smoking policies and how they are enforced. Sadly I have found few if any that are concerned with non-smokers. I'm a realist so I know people are going to smoke and we just have to work around it. But what I don't understand is why it is considered acceptable to bring an ashtray by the hut tub or pool and smoke while sitting in the water. This has really been our only complaint abut any nudist place we have been. I actually find smoking to be much more offensive behavior than other adult behaviors that may not be appropriate at a nudist resort. At least with the latter you can look away, with smoking you have to leave they area completely. But, at the end of the day resorts need to mkae money and please the majority of their customers. Until the majority of nudists decide to put down the butts the rest of us will just have to deal with it!
I guess it boils down to demographics. Most nudists tend to be above the median age of the population, and smokers probably are as well. I think less young people in the U.S. smoke now. My wife and I are in our 30's and we don't have a single friend or family member that smokes (some used to but all have since quit).
Does anyone know of any nudist resorts or clubs that are completely smoke-free? Cruises now offer smoke-free ships so maybe it's just a matter of time.

Actually, FlCpl4NewdFun, more college age students smoke now than when I was in college. I am at a School of Medicine, and it's sad how many future doctors are smoking. When I go out to lunch at a busy deli, there are an awful lot of students smoking in the appropriate section.
My club asks members to go outside to smoke. I have yet to have a member who was not conscientious of those around him/her.
Carolina Foothills has smoking areas - only outside the clubhouse. I like that.

i agree with the last post, that drinking and driving kills a lot more than any second hand smoke. the states want tax monies, but yet bans smoking in some places, that train of thought was not thought out too well.
some like to smoke when they drink, so if you can't smoke are you still drinking? BTY that is taxed as well, so are they going to ban drinking
pretty soon you won't be able to do anyting you like doing without it being banned. Wow No Nude resorts, No Nude Beaches, then they will band sex, eating, oh yeah they will tax breathing air as soon as they figure out how to meter it.
think about it. we are doing it to ourselves. we vote these nuts in office. maybe they will tax or ban that.
PS i Smoke and Drink, and have sex, and i eat. so since i am killing myself, i guess the government will have to take care of me. NOT.... i chose how i live and i will deal with it. No i don't impose my vises on anyone, because i move away from non smokers, and i don't drink and drive so i am not as likely to kill someone in a car accident. but yep i am using your sun to tan my nude body.
Have a Great Day :) Mike & Karen
