AJ, My wife & I have also been to SXM a few times, And I think Orient Beach is one of the finest beaches, all round, I have seen. But we always stay at some nearby location with better accomodations. I looked at the facilities at Orient Club, and was not impressed. I think they count very heavily on the convenience factor to bring them any return business. For myself, I'd rather walk a few hundred meters from a nicer dwelling, even if I have to grab a wrap to make the trip.
But if someone thinks it is worth the price for the convenience of having the beach at their door, well God love 'em. I'll spend my savings on a few fine meals in Grand Case.

My wife and I got to visit St Maarten/St Martin a few years ago as part of a cruise. We were aware of Orient Beach's reputation and heard a lot of crude jokes from the cruise staff. We did not get to visit the beach but on our bus tour of the island got to stop at an overlook and view the whole length of the beach. With a small pair of binoculars, the occupants of the eastern (nude) end of the beach were quite visible, so that everybody was either nude or wearing flesh colored suits. From that vantage point it was easy to see why Orient Beach is consistently voted the best beach, nude or otherwise, in the Carribbean. It is a beautiful long sweep of beach with sparkling blue-green water. You do not have to stay at Club O to use the nude portion of the beach. As several other people have responded, St Martin has many excellent resorts, from comfortable to ultra luxury. Even the big resort/casinos on the Dutch side are only a half-hour drive from Orient Beach. And there are several excellent resorts right on Orient Beach that are just a few minutes walk from the nude beach. Although the French acceptance of topless sunbathing on those portions of the beach are pretty close to being nude for the women. As far as food goes, the French restaurants in Marigot and Grand Case are some of the best in the entire Carribbean. But let's not allow the French to get too proud. The portions of St Martin that are not tourist related are very poor and right on the main roads, but the people there are very happy for the tourist trade. It is the only thing that provides income for the island. In that case, St Martin is like most of the Carribbean. Tourism provides the biggest income. But what we, the tourists, get are beautiful beaches, unforgettable underwater scenery, warm climates, swaying palm trees, rum, and great memories. (And I live in Florida)

We like to stay at the Mt Vernon hotel, just a few hundred meters away. It features staff and management from Air France and Le Meridian hotels and is quite the opposite from the rustic bungaloes at Orient. But either way...it is one of the best in the world for being nude. The shops and restaurant are fun. The beach is wonderous.

We were in St Martin on our cruise 4 or 5 years ago. We never got to Orient Beach. I had mention it to the couple we were with but got no answer. I hope someday we can go back and check it out. It sounds like a very good beach. Tom

Since I last posted here I have learned that Mont Vernon has gone into decline - in fact it may be bankrupt. For anyone who is considering the Mont Vernon, I suggest that they check it out through Tripadvisor.com The link for your convenience is
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g147346-d151180-Reviews-Hotel_Mont_Vernon-St_Maarten_St_Martin.html
That isn't good news for anyone who would like to stay at Orient Beach without being charged exhorbitant amounts of money by the owners of Club Orient.

My wife and I will be going to Club O in May. This will be 1st time staying there. Can you walk the whole beach nude if done before 9 or have they limited the nude area to Club O. Does any one have any preferences on the units -- beach chalet or suite. Any part of the resort better than other?
Thanks

We spent two weeks at St. Martin in the early 90's. We rented a car and had the oportunity to visit quite a few beaches on the island. We found Orient beach to be the most popular, and it was a bit of a drag having your picture taken by the cruise ship tourists. We also found the wind to be unbearable so we spent more time on the beaches on the French west side. Nudism was openly acceptable on Bae Rouge, Bae Longue, Petite bae and Cupecoy which was the busiest. Based on what we experienced Cupecoy would be my choice although things I've read lately say that Cupecoy has a problem with crime and some open sexual activity.

DW,
Yes, you can walk the entire beach in the nude. A word of caution.......best to do your nude walking in the early morning before 9:30 am and after 4:30pm. The rest of Orient Beach is less populated with textiles, families/children.
There are several that will brave the walk at all hours of the day but most of us walk during those times I mentioned.
As far as accomodation preference...we usually stay in a beach chalet, but it really depends on your budget. If you have unlimited $$ or you are willing to splurge....go for the beach or beachfront chalets. If you've got a budget you're trying to stay in, any of the other accomodations are fine. You spend so much time on the beach, at Papagayo's or the Perch, all you really do is sleep in your unit.
The chalets are the largest units. There is a website for Club Orient where you can view pictures of each unit. We've only stayed in the beach chalets but if they weren't available, we'd opt for a garden chalet, only because we like not sharing a common wall with our neighbors and having the extra room for guest to come over for dinner, drinks and conversation.
If you have any specific questions, please don't hesitate to ask, we have been there 3 times now and are headed back in June for our fourth year in a row.

My wife and I had our honeymoon at the Mt Vernon...it was the best way for us poor canadians to get to Orient Beach. We loved every minute of the beach...the hotel was distinctly average..but we spent most of our time outdoors anyway so we didnt care too much..

A newbe here but not to being a nudist. My wife and I are planning a caribbean vacation. We went to Eden Bay last year. I will make a post in that thread. We were thinking of Orient beach this time. After reading the posts here, maybe we will re-think this or stay at another hotel and walk a little. We hate to spend hard earned money and not have good accommodations, even factoring in that it is the caribbean. A question if I may. My wife would like to do two islands so would anyone know of an island hopping airline? I googled it and only came up with the majors. Was hoping for a smaller airline with better fight times. I guess trying to loose 1/2 a day in travel as opposed to a whole day between islands is asking too much. Thanks much

Try Caribbean Star airlines. Island-hopping is what they do. I think they may code-share with Air Jamaica. http://www.flycaribbeanstar.com/
