Some people love nude beaches. Some hate them. Where do you stand and why? I've never been to one, but I plan to try one out this coming summer.

It's kind of hit and miss. There is a large nude beach on the Columbia river called Rooster rock, I used to go there a lot but it is right off the Interstate and a lot of gawkers (which are some-what tolerable) and perverts (not tolerable) would show up. So I switched to Sauvie Island which is more out of the way. Still have the lookie-loos, but not so much. Nudist clubs are safe but a little rigid sometimes and it takes a while for people to get to know you. Some of the ones who live on the premises can be a bit over-protective, or over-involved in their own activities that sometimes you feel like a fifth wheel. A nude beach can be fun and spontaneous but it depends who is there and when. Week-ends during the summer can be a drag, but during the week if you have the time off you can meet the die-hard nudists instead of the part timers, or be almost alone and have the beach to your self.

Most of my experience in nudism has been at a nude beach in southern Vermont, called the Ledges. I've also been to Haulover in Florida. I love them both. I've visited many nudist clubs in the U.S. and Canada, and have had nothing but great times at them. It's a different experience at beaches and clubs. I think it's what the individual is looking for that determines which they like or dislike. Or at least which they prefer.

BTW, I plan on going to Sandy Hook this summer with my girlfriend, who lives in Brooklyn, and goes there regularly. Incidentaly, she's only been to nude beaches, and isn't sure she'd like a club. But we plan on going to one or two so she can compare.

Good point Whizzo about the rigidity of clubs. I can't speak from experience because I've never been to one, but I would certainly be very nervous as the newbie. I like beaches because nobody owns them, nobody runs them and you can basically enjoy it as you want to enjoy it. And since there is ot really any such thing as a nude beach, only "clothing optional" beaches, I don't have a problem with those who go but choose not to go nude. They wouldn't be there is they didn't respect others preferense to go nude and so long as that's the case, I'm cool with it. It's al abotu respecting each other.

We enjoy going to nude beaches, we go to Wreck beach as often as we can. You do not know people at the beach like you do at the club, and the beaches can get quite busy on the weekends. The clothing optional beaches do have non nudists, but that is cool, seems like everyone is there just to enjoy themselves.

I have enjoyed a few clothing optional beaches. The fear I would have as a woman (they don't normally post men, especially shaped like me) is ending up on sombodys web site.

I tried Sandy Hook for the first time last summer and bought a season pass ($50-) after my first visit; also, it was my first time nude in public. I was hooked. I can’t imagine wearing a bathing suit in the water now, it is so confining. Most people on the beach are friendly and you can choose to talk with others or not. The beach has a couple of hundred people there on a warm summer weekday and probably a thousand or more on the weekends. The water, last year, was great. There are tidal pools that, in many ways, are like hot tubs. Interesting enough, I casually mentioned, to a co-worker, that I enjoy the beach. We both teach and are off for the majority of the summer. He asked me where I go, I replied – “Sandy Hook.” Sandy Hook for those of you who have never been there, contains miles of regular beaches of which Gunnison is the only nude section. One thing led to another and he said that he and his wife had been to Gunnison as well – small world. I can’t wait until beach weather hits NJ. So for those of you who are considering the leap – in a way you have already made your decision. Happy Summer – Use Sunblock -:)

There is nothing better than the beach in the summertime. The water, the fresh air, the sun, aand the feeling of not having to wear a bathing suit. No rules, just right. I enjoy Sandy Hook. It's a nice beach with nice people.

I have said else where that I am not a club lover so most of my public nudity is at the beach, I do however get fed up with the parading element, if I find a beach is like that i'll go elsewhere.
If I were you Melissa, I would go to a busier beach as the element mentioned above is less apparent and I guess you are comfortable enough with your nudity to do that.

Sauvie Island is great as is Haulover if you like beaches. I grew up about 3 miles from the beach and HATE sand. LOL I do very much enjoy sailing, boating, canoeing au naturale.
I really preferred the controlled environment of a club.

I LOVE nude beaches, but I've only been to three, and one is no longer legal for nude use (Assateague National Seashore in Virginia). I've written in this forum before about visiting Sandy Hook, a wonderful experience. Playalinda in Florida was very nice too. Club Orient in St. Martin was right on Orient Bay, so it was like a nude beach and a resort in one. I like the lack of rigid rules at a nude beach, plus the experience of being able to just go to a beach without having to wear a suit. I wouldn't hesitate to go to another one.
