Dennis Kirkpatrick

Dennis is part of the new breed of naturist activists. He is a whirlwind of activity both online and offline. He got us our first major moderated nudist forum as a SIG (special interest group) of the Compuserve Outdoor forum. He joins other pioneers in the nudist online revolution like Cheri-Donna Alexander at Prodigy, Michael Corbin at Delphi, Cheef Dan, and our own Kevin right here on this board. There have been countless people informed about nudism though these boards - more than in all the PR efforts combined in the past 30 years.

Dennis is also the keeper of the "FAQS" on the rec-nude news group. He was active in organizing the East coast whale watches as coordinator of the Pilgrim Naturists in Boston. He has his own nudist promotional site, SunClad.com and he acts as the central coordinator for the Nudist Web Ring which links all the personal nudist sites together on the web.

And, that's not all, as they say in the commercial. As part of his activities with the Naturist Action Committee, he provides instant action alerts throughout the online community when there is an anti-nudity law or action occurring anywhere in the U.S. as part of NAC's legislative watch program.

He also writes a computer tips column in "N" magazine educating naturists on how to get plugged in to all this neat online information and nudist comraderie online. Way Kewl.

Bill & Fran Flesher

Bill & Fran owned and operated the highly successful nudist club, Treehouse Fun Ranch (now Deer Park Nudist Resort) in Devore, CA.

Bill was a master at throwing big publicity events which drew the public to the nudist club for nude pageants, nude skydiving and other nude spectacles. The shows put on by the Hollywood stunt men at the club were also fun as were the chili cookoffs sponsored by the club.

While many in the nudist movement considered the nude pageants controversial at best and "meat parades" at worst, Bill succeeded in keeping all his events tasteful and fun for everyone. His primary accomplishment was in gaining public attention and interest in the nudist movement through an aggressive public relations campaign promoting his club.

Today the club is little more laid back but is a welcome stop for nudists halfway between L.A. and Las Vegas off I-15.

Ron & Nancy Tiemann

Talk about being converted to nudism! This couple fell for nude cruising in a BIG way. They reluctantly went on a clothing-optional diving trip in 1987 when they couldn't get booked on their regular trip. They fell in love with nude cruising and began their highly successful Bare Necessities travel agency in 1992. Nude luxury cruising was unheard of when they began promoting it. Since then they've arranged for 12,000 people to experience nude cruises in various parts of the world.

More than that, they've have been the source of some of the greatest publicity the nudist industry has ever received. Early on, they embraced the organized nudist world and Bare Necessities is an AANR travel club itself.

Here's to many more successful cruises in the future!

Steve & Linda Payne
Ray & Sue Lavato

These folks are the creators and owner/operators of the West Coast's premiere nudist accommodation, Desert Shadows Inn.
They started - - - as a Bed and Breakfast inn in 1992 with 11 rooms on the site of the old Errol Flynn resort in Palm Springs, CA. Then these imaginative nudists built on and expanded to create a nudist community with 59 or so villa suites and excellent hotel accommodations for the traveling nudist. They are all four excellent innkeepers and managers and make every guest, visitor or villa owner feel truly welcome.

This is a great accomplishment in itself but the reason they are important to the movement is, from day one they became involved with the town of Palm Springs and its Chamber of Commerce. They are not only well recognized and well respected by the community of Palm Springs they generated worldwide publicity recently with their "nude bridge" dubbed the Lee Baxandall Bridge. This shows a nudist "community" can co-exist within the tighter confines of a regular U.S. town without problems.

Beverly Price

School teacher, mom, nudist spokesperson, AANR Trustee. Bev Price has been working tirelessly for the nudist movement for years. As a spokesperson giving media interviews for the Arizona Wildflowers events, she comes across as the level headed, articulate American mom she is. Wish we had a hundred like her.

She has served in the WSA and taken on all manner of projects and continues to lend her expertise and sound judgement today to the AANR and the President's Action Group where they are strategizing the future direction of the AANR.
Why isn't she an AANR President I wonder?

Jim Hadley

A true visionary, Jim bought an old orange grove near Kissimmee, FL. back in 1964 and he saw the makings of a fabulous, full service nudist resort, Cypress Cove Nudist Resort. This was at a time when the average nudist "resort" was an open field with some camping sites and a clubhouse. Jim created many firsts. A full service restaurant and bar on the grounds for visitor convenience, real motel units and mobile homes for week-long vacationer stays, a computerized office and bookings system, all these things were innovative for nudist parks of the day. Together Jim and wife, Pete, built America's best nudist resort which is still in operation and being run by Hadleys. Jim once told me, "Veal, always consider human engineering when setting up nudist facilities." In other words, make it feel comfortable. Cypress Cove is certainly that.

Jim's biggest contribution was in his active participation in the community. Realizing good community relations is the basis for any successful nudist business he got involved early. He served on the Osceola County Chamber of Commerce where he was active in promoting the Houston Astros since their summer training camp is in Kissimmee, FL. just down the road from the Cove. Jim also served as one of the ASA's most progressive presidents.

If you are in Florida visit Jim's legacy resort. You'll be glad you did.

This is a good list.. thanks in particular for mentioning Read Schuster, founder of the American Nudist Research Library (of which I am currently the Vice-President). Also notable is the late Donald Johnson, who's collection of nudist material can be found in it's own alcove in the library. Also on your list is Jim Hadley, who tegether with his wife Lyda "Pete" Hadley founded Cypress Cove Resort 40 years ago. (The anniversary celebration is this coming weekend, April 16-17-18). The Hadley's donated spce in their clubhouse 25 years ago to start the Library. The ANRL now has it's own building on the grounds of Cypress Cove.

Read B. Schuster

Read made possible one of the only two nudist research libraries in the world. With his extensive collection of nudist materials he established the American Nudist Research Library in Sept. 1979 on the grounds of Cypress Cove Nudist Resort. ANRL celebrated its 25th Anniversary this year.

Over the years the library has amassed a huge collection of old nudist magazines, taped interviews with nudist pioneers and leaders and research material on nudism. The library makes it possible for serious students or university researchers to obtain background material on this great movement we call nudism. If you are ever on the grounds of Cypress Cove by all means stop in and check out the library. Membership in the library is open to all nudists and those interested in the subject.

The other nudist library in the world is Internationale FKK-Bibliothek located in Baunatal, Germany. It was founded by Karlwilli Damm and is now run by his son Joerg Damm and has been in existence for several decades.

Check them both out:

Donald Johnson

Donald Johnson was an avid historian of the nudist movement in the U.S. and wrote a definitive book, The Nudists about the nudist movement. This book was one of the very few books that informed the general public about the nudist lifestyle as it existed in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. Later Mr. Johnson co-authored the book, Nudist Society with William E. Hartman, Ph.D. and Marilyn Fithian in 1970. This book contained much of what was in the The Nudists and a lot of research material produced by Dr. Hartman regarding nudist attitudes, backgrounds, demographics, etc. It was also available to the general public to shed a little light on the mystery we nudists present to the outside world.

Unfortunately both books are out of print today although you may be able to obtain a copy of the Nudist Society through Amazon's Out of Print Book Service.

Much of Donald Johnson's research material on the nudist movement can now be found at the American Nudist Reseach Library in Florida.

Side Note: Under the name John Dudley Ball, Donald Johnson penned In the Heat of the Night in 1965 making it possible for Rod Steiger, and later Caroll O'Connor, to make tidy sums playing Police Chief Bill Gillespie in the movie and TV versions of his novel.

Cec Cinder, Ph.D.

Dr. Cinder was in on the early formaton the U.S. Free Beach Movement back in the early 70's. I believe he chaired the first Free Beaches Committee which met in California and was active in obtaining or trying to obtain legal nude beaches throughout the state. This is a fight that continues today.

Dr. Cinder's greatest accomplishment is the book he recently published after years of research on the nudist movement worldwide. His book, The Nudist Idea, covers the history of the nudist philosophy in depth all the way from Richard Ungewitter back in turn of the century Germany through the American Free Beach Movement of the 70's. Unlike the books The Nudists and Nudist Society, this book is in print and is available from Ultraviolet Press at:

Roland R. Senecal

Roland served as the Administrator of the American Sunbathing Association (ASA) for 10 years from 1975 to 1985. This was an exciting period for organized social nudism and, as Administrator, Roland was often the "official" voice of American nudists during countless newspaper and radio interviews. In addition to keeping the ASA office running smoothly during a period of membership growth, he provided continuity for a decade. Trustees and officers come and go but the Administrator's office goes on. Roland set the standard for today's AANR Executive Director position.

When Roland decided to retire from active nudist service in 1985 and devote more time to wife Eileen and his family, he also wrote a nudist history entitled, Nudism 'Round the World. It is a concise review of the nudist movement from Germany through the 1980's nudist movement. Unfortunately, it never received widespread distribution although I'm proud to say I own an autographed copy from my friend Roland.

Bob Page

If Roland Senecal was the American nudist movement's voice, Bob Page was its legal voice. Bob, an attorney based in Denver, CO., served as the ASA's Legal Advisor for years for only expenses. I shudder to think what his services might have cost if he submitted billable hours. He cheerfully donated his time because he believed in the nudist movement. This meant he was constantly researching legal precedents with regards to nudity. He was often called on to testify as an "expert witness" in cases involving nudism or an ASA chartered club. He filed even more Amicus Curiae (Friend of the Court) briefs in child custody battles and other cases involving nudism.

Along with wife, Elizabeth (Betty), who served as the ASA Legislation Committee Chair, they attended almost every ASA convention. When the debates became loud and the attendees fractious, Bob's was the cool voice of reason and logic which brought everyone back to the table. His contribution to the nudist movement up until his death is incalculable. Suffice it to say he prevented a lot of legal judgments against nudists and laws against nudism from being enacted over the years.

Don Deakin

Don was nudism's Great Communicator. A high school teacher in the Chicago area, Don burst onto the nudist scene in the 1980's with a nudist travel club, The Chicago Sun Club, still in operation today. Most nudist travel clubs then and now, had a small number of members who rotated meeting at members' homes and maybe a trip to a nudist club now and then. Don turned the whole idea on its ear by aggressively seeking out urban facilities to rent for nudist activities. He rented gyms and health clubs all over the city for nude nights including the famous "Walleyball" or volleyball played on a racquet court (you gotta try it to understand it!). He rented bowling alleys to hold nude bowling. He once told me it was at one of these events that one of his students from his HS class recognized him. The student worked at the alley and thought it was cool that his teacher was a nudist. CSC still holds "buff bowling" events today.

Chicago Sun Club grew so rapidly because of Don's ambitious public relations and marketing efforts, he actually franchised the concept and soon there was a Chicago Sun Club North, South and West. Don also became involved in the public relations efforts of the American Sunbathing Association and pushed an aggressive approach to marketing.

He produced a professional quality printed club newsletter as well which won awards. Back in those days most newsltters were hand-typed, mimeographed or photocopy affairs which looked amateurish.

He and wife Joan and family also leased out to manage an older established nudist club near Battle Creek, MI., Sunshine Gardens during the summer season. The Deakin family successfully marketed that club for a few summers.

Fred Bischoff

Fred spent years talking to other nudists at AANR and regional conventions looking for investors in his dream of a first class nudist destination resort. For years he had no takers. Most nudists felt it wouldn't work, nudist clubs of the day (with the exception of Cypress Cove) were rural affairs on a few acres of land with a clubhouse. No one was willing or able to invest the millions of dollars a first class resort would need in capital.

Well Fred found his financial backer(s) and built the U.S.'s first premiere nudist resort, - - Resort in the late 70's. It was the first resort to have regular hotel type rental units with maid service, a first class restaurant and bar, swimming pools, and attached RV resort. It was also the first to sell condo units on its grounds. In the years since, it has attracted thousands visitors from all over the world and garnered much positive publicity for the nude recreation industry as a whole. It also proved, for the investment comunity, that the nude recreation industry was viable and profitable. In short, - - ushered in the modern era of nudist resorts we all take for granted today.

Fred has since retired from the nudist industry but - - borrowed a chapter from Don Deakin by franchising the Paradise concept in buying Hidden Valley Resort near Atlanta, GA and converting it to Paradise Valley Resort.
