Wonder if Jackie O counts? Seem to remember the scandal involving someone who snapped nude photos of her as she was getting ready to swim nude in a pool. The scandal was the selling and publishing of the photos in Hustler magazine.

Wow, I had no idea Hidden Valley changed hands, that was my weekend hangout for years back in the early nineties. Has it changed a lot now that it is a Paradise operation?

Morley & Mary Lou Schloss

Morley Schloss and family hosted the Rochester Naturists group from his home for years before "taking the fight" to the streets. As a result of the legal battles waged by the Schlosses and more importantly the Top Free Seven, it is now legal for women to be topless in the state of New York.

Mary Lou Schloss and Ramona Santorelli along with five other courageous women and with Morley Schloss' support first held a top free picnic at a public park in Rochester, NY in 1986. Of course, they were immediately arrested and wound up fighting this all the way through the New York court system until 1992 when the New York State Court of Appeals ruled unanimously that, "the Exposure of a Person law does not apply to the non-commercial and not lewd exposure of women's breasts."

Today, Morley is still very active fighting for our rights with the Naturist Action Committee.

Mark Storey

Mark is an active member of the Naturist Action Committee and has testified at anti-nudity legislation hearings all over the country.

As editor at large for "N" magazine, the Naturist Society's excellent magazine, he has written interesting and informative narratives of all the naturist events he has participated in or helped organize. He did a great piece on the nude beaches of Long Island on the East coast and participated in the Fremont Fresh Air Festival along with two other intrepid naturist activists as nude bicyclers to much media attention.

He is a founding member of the Body Freedom Collaborative http://www.bodyfreedom.org/index.html in Seattle whose goal is to bring attention for the need for legal clothing-optional beaches through "guerilla pranksterism".

Mark, along with Shannon Kringen, and Clayton Schwartz went skinny-dipping in Puget Sound on Jan. 17 for the Collaborative's second annual Polar Bare Dip off Carkeek Park Beach to signal their "commitment to bringing clothing-free opportunities on public lands closer to the people of the cities."

They plan to conduct a "mass nude photo shoot" at the Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle this spring and random in-the-buff neighborhood graffiti cleanups. Most of these tactics garner much media attention and push the envelope for when and where public nudity can happen. This is in stark contrast to the hide your head in the sand / wait and see where they attack us next approach nudist leaders have followed the past two decades.

In 1999 he led the effort to defeat Washington Senate Bill 5351, a measure that would have placed skinnydippers on the state's list of sex offenders.

Mark is also author of a new book, Cinema Au Naturel: A History of Nudist Film

Bob Morton

Bob is another very active member of the Naturist Action Committee, an organization dedicated to defending the rights of naturists everywhere.

Bob is also an articulate and gifted writer who published one of the first club newsletters for the Hill Country Nudists I ever read that went beyond the fluff of everyday club events and tackled hard core issues regarding the nudist moevement. Bob also shared my penchant for printing everyone's full name in the newsletter. Back in those days you weren't allowed to use last names of members as if there were something shameful in the practice of our chosen lifestyle.

The entire Morton family were plaintiffs in a NAC-supported lawsuit to return the rights of parents who wish to bring their children with them to Hippie Hollow, a clothing optional public park near Austin, Texas.

Bob has testified before various state legislative committees on behalf of naturists, and has been chairman of NAC since 1997. Before joining the board, he was a NAC Area Rep.

In addition to watching out for our interests in all 50 states of the U.S., he currently watches for anti-nudity legislation in all 254 counties in Texas since that state voted for home rule last year. This means any county in the state can enact their own anti-nudist ordinances and laws.

Judy Williams

Judy Williams, a school teacher from Vancouver, has been a one woman defender of Wreck Beach, a nude beach in Vancouver, Canada for almost 30 years now. She is President of the Wreck Beach Preservation Society, Federation of Canadian Naturists' Government Affairs Officer and a member of the Naturist Action Committee.

Judy is in the midst of yet another battle to protect the beach. The University of British Columbia is planning on building two 20-story residences for its students overlooking the nude beach. It goes without saying, in these days of web cams and the Internet that the nude beach attendees will become performers in a circus for frat boys and others.

The Wreck Beach Preservation Society (WBPS) has fought since January 25, 1977, to prevent Wreck Beach from being destroyed by development that UBC has fought equally hard to implement. Since those early years, WBPS have lobbied for the public to have a say before, not after the fact. Apparently it's happening all over again.

Judy has also been influential in the recent naturist activism at Crystal Crescent Beach in Nova Scotia and in the North American effort for women's topfree equality

Bern Loibl

Back in 1990 Bern Loibl recognized the need for a first class naturist magazine, one that could be distributed to the public or appear on magazine racks much like the old Sunshine & Health magazine.

What he came up with was far better than that. Naturally magazine was inaugurated with the Fall/Winter Premiere issue in 1990 and has continued quarterly since. It has now morphed into Travel Naturally magazine and is an excellent representation of where you can go in the world to enjoy a nude vacation. The magazine is full of attractive naturist settings with real people—not voluptous non-nudist models—and it does a credit to the naturist lifestyle and naturists everywhere.

Bern Loibl's best accomplishment is the fact that he has achieved distribution for Travel Naturally magazine in major bookstore chains like Walden books. The more mainstream we can get with our publications the more accepted nudism will become.

Jerry Derbyshire

Jerry was a gifted naturist photographer who had an artist's eye for creating stunning naturist scenes. You've probably seen his work and not even known it. If you have ever picked up a copy of Lee Baxandall's World Guide to Nude Recreation or AANR's North American Guide to Nude Recreation chances are you've seen Jerry's work. I had the pleasure of meeting Jerry while he was in Texas shooting pictures for the AANR Guide. He was a very friendly, down-to-earth fellow.

Jerry died at a very young age and the naturist movement lost a great spokesperson in him. "A picture is worth a thousand words."

Ellyn Kern

Ellyn Kern has been active in nudist politics and public relations in the Midwest for more than 20 years. She single-handedly owned and ran Tri-States Country Club in Southeastern Indiana now known as Drakes Ridge Rustic Nudist Retreat, Inc.. She has since retired from active management of the club.

Ellyn has always been an articulate and enthusiastic spokesperson for the nudist movement appearing on various radio and TV programs and being interviewed by reporters locally and nationwide.

She and husband, Gerry Brown, recently garnered attention on the Home and Garden TV channel which featured their unique Pole House designed and built by themsleves. It also mentions the nudist "colony" they lease land to next door.

Elmer Johnson

For years Elmer Johnson was President of the Midwest Sunbathing Association (MSA) covering the states of Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. Through it all Elmer kept the organization at the forefront in public relations often acting as the MSA spokesperson during the MSA Regional conventions held at various nudist clubs in these states. Once again, this was during a period when most nudists were afraid to give their last names to a reporter or even other nudists.

In the late 70's, early 80's, Elmer, wife Bonnie, and their extended family of nudists organized the Annual Spring Conference held at Riverside Resort in San Antonio, TX. They would team up with Avatans (a nudist club in Minneapolis, MN) members and bus down to Texas for a week of comraderie and intense volleyball. It was during this Spring Conference that the seeds were sown for the formation of a new region of the American Sunbathing Association, the Southwestern Sunbathing Association.

Elmer and Bonnie also founded the nudist travel club Sno-Birds also based in Minneapolis. I can think of no better representatives of the nudist movement than these two people and their entire family. (I can also testify that Elmer was the only one tall enough to bean me with a spiked volleyball during an intense walleyball competition)

Sadly we lost Elmer "El" on May 22nd. 2005 at age 78 to cancer. He is survived by wife Bonnie, daughters Mona, Barb, Maxine & Cathleen, and sons Matt and Ed.

Glyn Stout

For almost 30 years Glyn Stout has been actively promoting naturism in the Silicon Valley area. Glyn owns Lupin Lodge located in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Northern California. Lupin is one of the few surviving nudist clubs in the U.S. founded in the 30's at the dawn of the American nudist movement. Since taking over the club in 1977, Glyn, through active promotion and marketing, took club membership from the 700 members in Sol Stern's day to today's 1,000 plus members.

He's also overseen the transformation of Lupin from a park-like environment to a modern, upscale naturist resort— twice. The club's major buildings were decimated by the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989 and Glyn has overseen the long remodeling process since.

Glyn was also a founding member of the Trade Association for Nude Recreation (TANR). This is the business association for business owners and promoters who are in the nudist industry. You can't have a successful nudist movement if there are no safe locales to go nude and the nudist resort and campground owners of North America make this possible.

Glyn was also one of three major consultants along with Jim Hadley and Fred Bischoff on the 270 unit nudist apartment complex we opened in Houston in 1983.

Nate Kates

Nates Kates was another West Coast nudist powerhouse and activist. Nate spent 45 years promoting nudism and acting as a spokesperson for the movement right up until the time of his death in 2002.

Nate was President of the Western Sunbathing Assocation now known as AANR-West. He was also President of the American Sunbathing Association and later inducted into AANR's Nudist Hall of Fame. Nate worked tirelessly promoting nudism to the general public but he also enjoyed attending the conventions all over the country and was a friend to many nudists.

For years he also provided the name tags for all the officers of the association to wear at convention and official meetings. If you've ever served as AANR officer, trustee, or regional director, chances are Nate supplied your name tag.

Erich Schuttauf, J.D. & Family

Erich Schuttauf was originally hired by the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) to be its Government Affairs Coordinator but was instead placed in the position of AANR Executive Director. In this capacity he has served as an excellent representative of the modern North American nudist movement to the media. Erich manages day to day an organization of almost 50,000 members, 240 clubs, a staff of 10 or so and a budget over 1 million dollars while looking out for the interests of the average nudist AANR member.

Dr. Schuttauf has testified before legislative bodies considering anti-nudity ordinances or laws several times presenting AANR's views and trying to prevent nudists from being lumped in with topless bars and strip clubs.

The most important thing Erich his wife and two children did recently was to go on nationwide TV to defend the nudist lifestyle on Good Morning America vs. a hostile politician in the form of Florida Congressman Mark Foley. Foley was looking to get elected to higher office as a Senator using the controversy of nudist youth camps as his stepping stone. The Schuttauf family was a perfect example of the modern American nudist family and I think they all did the nudist movement a great service in their defense of the AANR sponsored Youth Leadership Camps.
