Isley Boone

The Rev. Isley Boone (Uncle Danny) was a charismatic speaker and powerful organizer and is the father of the AANR, then called the American Sunbathing Sunbathing Association. In 1933 Mr. Boone began producing the first nudist magazine in the U.S., The Nudist and later, Sunshine & Health. Even with the genitals airbrushed out of the photos the U.S. Postal Service decided the materials were obscene and couldn't be distributed through the U.S. mails.

This fight was also taken all the way to the Supreme Court where the Rev. Boone ultimately won the right to distribute nudist materials through the U.S. mails. This victory paved the way for not only legitimate nudist magazines and materials but also some of the more seedier versions and, eventually, Hugh Hefner's Playboy empire.

A side note:
The fight to wrest control of the ASA away from Rev. Boone is the reason the AANR regions were formed although back then there were only five regions I believe.

vealj,

read dr. parmalee's book years ago, and while a little dated by todays prose, was an enjoyable read.

Sol Stern

Sol Stern, a WSA Regional trustee, along with ASA President, Stan Stohler and WSA Regional trustee, Ed Lange, arranged for one of the first "Free Beach" demonstrations in California. Known as XB-58 or Experimental Beach 1958, it was an organized gathering of nudists from clubs all over California to bring attention to the concept of a nude public beach. Although it wasn't strictly open to the public, it was the first time ASA officials acted in an attempt to get government officials such as the governor and such to acknowledge free beaches. Unfortunately, it was also the last time ASA tried to be pro-active in obtaining free beaches for nudists.

Sol & Toby Stern went on to manage Lupin Lodge in Los Gatos and bring it's membership to 700 from 100 members. Sol was also a two term ASA president in his own right.

Another couple of notables: Jim Hadley in FL did support the free beaches down there & Ray Connett in CA who was the founder of Glen Eden.

Veal, I met Toby Stern (who now lives in FL) in '91. She and Sol were great folk. AND...you've been active over the years and in fact, when you were PR chair in the SWSA, gave me some very good ideas.

Hugs, cheri

Kurt Barthel

Kurt Barthel could be called the father of the American Nudist Club. He began the American League for Physical Culture in 1929 with an ad in the newspaper requesting like-minded folks to join him. Some people say this organization was the evolutionary beginning of the American nudist movement in general and the American Sunbathing Association (now called the American Association for Nude Recreation or AANR).

He founded America's first official nudist camp, Sky Farm in New Jersey at a time when nudists and nudism were not accepted at all by the American public in the throes of a depression.

Ed Lange

Ed Lange was very active in the WSA and in the first stirrings of the Free Beach movement in the 1960's in California. He was a nudist photographer of great fame and publisher of many nudist pamphlets and magazines showing the nudist lifetyle to the general public.

His biggest feat, however, was as founder of the Elysium Institute in Topanga Canyon, CA. The institute was a popular L.A. area nudist destination and hosted seminars for folks from all walks of life including non-nudists. He had to fight L.A. County and his neighbors to keep Elysium open almost the entire time of its existence up until the day he died but he prevailed. Unfortunately Elysium closed after his death.

On a personal note, Elysium is where my wife first experienced nudism and, it turns out, Ed told me we both went to the same high school back in Chicago where we're both from.

Edith Church

Ms. Church was a member of the nudist club The Bruins of Ohio located in the great state of, yep, you guessed it, Ohio. This was during a time when many nudist clubs felt it absolutely necessary to keep their locations a well-kept secret. It turns out they weren't so paranoid after all.

On Aug. 29, 1948 the sheriff and deputies along with newspaper reporters raided The Bruins nudist club after locating it by search in a plane. Members were roughed up by deputies during the raid and Ms. Church, who was dressed at the time of the raid, was ordered to remove her clothes so the reporters could take pictures. All the members were arrested, charged, and convicted. Edith Church fought her conviction all the way to the Supreme Court but ultimately lost when the court refused to review the case.

Edith Church also retained the publishing rights for American Sunshine and Health magazine started by Isley Boone but the magazine never really came back. In addition, Ms. Church was a staunch supporter of the National Nudist Council. This was an offshoot organization started by Isley Boone after he was removed from power in the ASA. The NNC is still around today but has little impact on the nudist movement in this country.

Thelma Manning

Thelma and Reg Manning single-handedly pubished the independent nudist newspaper, Bare In Mind. While it provided mostly news regarding the nudist and free beaches scene on the West coast, it also provided an alternative viewpoint to the conservative nudist establishment of the time.

Bare In Mind was also distributed beyond nudist circles which made it an excelent outreach vehicle to educate the public about our activities and de-mystify the nudist movement.

And the list keeps growing and growing. Thanks for the information vealj, most of us are indebted to these people for opening up nudism to us, and I would venture to say a lot of us do not know who they are.

Forrest Emerson

Mr. Emerson is a bit of a departure from the common thread of my list in that he didn't do a lot to disseminate nudist news to the general public. However, he published a monthly column in Bare in Mind detailing the political workings of the ASA and it opened this nudist's eyes.

I believe Forrest was one of the first nudists I met who advocated actually getting aggressive about getting our message out to the public. This was during a time when the conservative East coast nudist leaders wanted to hide from the public essentially. (I had a friend who tried to publish a nudist park guide for general distribution and a couple clubs threatened to sue him if he inlcuded their clubs' locations in his guide).

We've come a long way since then, I hope.

Ray Connett

The "Father of Canadian Nudism", Ray wrote the book on public relations for nudist clubs, literally. I learned my first techniques for dealing with the media from a pamphlet Ray wrote for the ASA.

Ray was a tireless promoter of the nudist philosophy to the public and spoke in front of many groups about the topic, to the Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary, etc. His belief in the power of publicity and his organizing abilities brought Canada's widely dispersed nudist groups toogether into a nudist movement.

When he finished helping found Canada's oldest nudist club, The Van Tan Club, he went on to form his own highly successful Canadian club, Sunny Trails, in 1952. Ray was a self-described "progressive" nudist and he opened the club to all, including single males. As a result, the club grew rapidly and was very successful.

Then he came on down to the U.S. and bought property north of Lake Elsinore in California for a nudist club. He and wife, Mildred, settled here and donated their land to form the cooperative nudist club, Glen Eden Sun Club in 1963, still in operation today.

Turner Stokes

The Father of the Government Affairs area of AANR. Turner was heavily involved in the fight to preserve the Assateague Seashore as a nude recreation area. As head of the National Capitol Naturists, he began to get aquainted with many federal officials in an effort to head off ill-informed and hastily drawn up regulations by various government agencies.

Later, as a highly successful ASA president, he convinced the AANR organization of the very real need to keep our heads to the ground in Washington and throughout the U.S. through a strong Government Affairs team and professional lobbyists. He is active even today as the AANR gears up in an attempt to restore the Assateague area to a legally recognized nude area.
