No Topic Needed In This Thread - Topic-Free Zone

There was a good suggestion for an "off topic" topic, where the Admin won't gripe at you for ignoring the subject!

And so, drum roll please, the moment we have been waiting for has finally arrived! In this thread, and this thread only, it matters not what the subject is, nor if there was a subject in the first place. So, what's new with you?

Wife and I moved to Daytona Beach FL from New England and all are friends are complaining about the heat in the North East...Been a balmy 92 with a 9-12 MPH breeze here and WE have 2 nice nude beaches besides the "World's most Famous Beach" here in Daytona. My son went to school in AZ, what's with that claim of a DRY HEAT?

I hope all the NRO members in the path of Hurricane Irene have taken steps to stay safe. This is a huge storm, and is likely to cause considerable mayhem in parts of the US - mid-Atlantic states and New England - that don't usually get hurricanes. Having gone through a Texas Gulf Coast hurricane myself, I can tell you they are no fun, especially when you lose water and electricity for weeks afterward. If you're in an area that is under an evacuation order, turn off the computer, empty out the fridge, and get out of there.

I am in New Bern,NC in a new building experancing its first real storm (been here for 25 yrs so I have seen a few) it is 10AM and the eye wall is almost past! We are in the the evac. zone but we didn't leave, the house is 3 story brick and one block off the Neuse River the wind has changed to the north and the water is droping fast. We have been restoring this 300 yr old city center, under ground electric, rebilt sewer and water system, I think the city has done well, the power is still on and water is fine. The buiding has a few leaks due to sidways rain and 80 mph wind but I am happpy! The city has taken a lot of grief about it's city owned power system due to its cost but a neighboring comunity that has both New Bern Power and Progress enegry is seeing that N.B.Power is on and Progress has been off for the last 8 Hrs!I'll write more tomorrow after I clean up

MJ,

I am really surprised that your internet connection and power are still up. Here in Dallas if we have 40 MPH winds I will usually lose one or the other.

Living much further inland than New Bern we in Durham had little effect from Irene. I had hoped for 3 or 4 inches of rain. Bummer, maybe 1 inch but the temperatures dropped like a rock.

Happy Nuding.

Hmph! I'm 2000 miles away from Irene, but we STILL had a power outage most of today.

As I said in my previous post WE the citizens of New Bern have been working for 20 years to rehab this old city, we have a downtown redevelopment assn. called Swiss Bear, we in the historic district pay an additonal tax called MSD on top of state, federal, city and county taxes! With this we pay for street scape development, water ,sewer, underground utilities(elect, phone, cable, and fiberoptics.) It is not without its problems however, people in other parts of the city don't understand why downtown is getting all of these neat things they see it as tax dollars at work not as our dedicated tax dollars and would not think of adding another $.17/ $100 eval to their tax bill, just give us our fair share they say! Enough politics, the system worked well and I didn't loose power until 10pm sat. when a substation on the main trunck north of us blew, it was restored by 8am Sun. So-good night Irene good night! If you want to see a 300 yr old town moving bravely into the 21st century visit us in New Bern Michael

True they do taper off, but November hurricanes are not rare at all. I'll be surprised if we don't get at least the occasional serious rainstorm.

well, living on the "wet coast" of Canada,we're used to heavy rain.
I backpacked around central America a few years ago during the summer. So, I've seen some of the weather we could get.
Crossing our fingers that we get lucky and have a heat wave in November.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, Doc, but that envelope you get once a month -- you're supposed to put a check in the provided inner envelope, along with the utility bill, put a stamp on the outside, and mail it in.

This will prevent anymore outages of electricity.
