There are also many state/local laws against smoking in the US. However, these are private clubs, and it would be akin to telling you to stop smoking in your own home. Cheri

I think smoking is banned in private clubs as well, but I have an idea there can be a vote in favour. I am against smoking, but am surprised it is now illegal to smoke in a phone box!

I think you will find that the law states that it is illegal to smoke in any enclosed building used by others which of course includes private members clubs. However it is not illegal to smoke outdoors even in public places so someone could legally smoke on the sun bathing lawn but not in the club house or toilets. For bars that are now providing 'smoking shelters' they to can fall foul of the law if they are over 50% enclosed. A gazebo is ok as long as it has only one side enclosed.
Once our government has forced enough people to stop smoking by these new laws and the tax revenue has dropped to near zero they will have to think of another tax to replenish the coffers.

I agree...B4dger...eventually enough people will quit smoking and our government will have to decide on another "vice" to tax...

I never have smoked and am against smoking. At a nude beach, I can tell when somebody lights up a cigarette 20 feet away. A nude beach is where we enjoy nature as God created it; therefore why pollute the natural with tobacco smoke.
I do understand that some people are addicted. We don't want to exclude them from the nude beach.

That depends on whether it is a designated non-smoking area. Otherwise move.

I think reasonable accomodations can be worked out 9 times out of 10. Most smokers I know are very reasonable and considerate of others.

I think most smokers don't realize how much their smoke annoys non-smokers. I smoked 3 to 4 packs a day for over 30 years. Like most other smokers I thought it didn't bother other people the much.I stopped after a 2 week stay in the hospital and haven't smoked sence 1987. I now know how my bad manners effected others . I used to think in the car if I rolled my window down a crack then my smoke woudn't bother anyone . I used to think if I was outside that my smoke couldn't possibly be annoying anyone else. I thought my home was a place that I could do anything I wanted and my smoke couln't be bothering my family. I think back on all the people my bad manners effected and I feel bad about what I was doing to them.If this sounds like you then maybe you should do something about it. If I can stop smoking at the level that I smoked then anyone can. All you have to do is throw them away. The first week is bad but after that it's no big deal. If I had stopped sooner or not smoked at all maybe I wouldn't have the COPD that I have now.I could tell you how much that effects my life but I won't boar you with the details.
That's my ani-smoking lecture for today .

What about your exhaust fumes ? I'll chain smoke a pack of 20 if you'll put your lips around your exhaust pipe and inhale. let's see who dies first.

i just recently gave up smoking cigars. when i was enjoying the beach, i always tried to be mindful of others when i smoked. i sometimes had to get up and walk around to smoke depending on which way the wind was blowing.

Existing smoking laws are badly broken micromanagement of personal liberties, which also fail miserably in important protections of victims of nicotine addicts.
A far more functional solution would be to repeal most existing regulation of smoking, and simply classify imposing smoke on a victim who does not or cannot consent as a special form of assault. The special case is that unlike flailing around one's fists beyond the nose of another, it's possible to in effect do so with noxious irritant and toxin laden smoke prior to the victim entering a space where he as a right to be.
This solution would finally protect kids from addict parents, and would regulate actions at private clubs, since a parent or club owner cannot consent to criminally assault a child, nor that another visitor to a site agrees to tolerate assault by smoke any more than being punched in the face or lungs.
Considering that naturist and nudist demographics are skewed towards better educated and higher intelligence people, whose rates of addiction are around 17%, versus a national average of 23%, and 40% for high school dropout urban ethnic males, one might expect fewer conflicts from assaultive nicotine addicts among us than in the general population.

As a former nicotine addict (1 pack/day for 10 years) I can tell you that nicotine is a nice, nice, brain-pleasing narcotic. I've been free for 3 years now but the brain still says yes. Sorry.

Parts of the U.S. are going crazy with the no smoking thing, especially in California. There is no smoking allowed in any place that the public is allowed(including some outside areas) or in any government building. And you must be (I believe) 100 feet from any doorway. For now smoking is allowed in private clubs and the law says in private owned bars without food service with fewer than 6(?) employees. However they have been issuing citations to small bar owners without reguard to the law. Most of these owners have won their cases with great expence and most don't allow smoking now just to avoid the hassle. I think the bar/pub thing is stupid. "HEY, you can't smoke, it may harm someone! But go ahead and throw back a few pints or some drinks and drive home."
