Be courteous, present your point, do not attack those you disagree with.

Please stop yourself before using the pronoun "you" in an unfriendly manner. This is a flame-free forum. We have a no-tolerance policy on destroying camaraderie.

That said, what's your political position on current events?

I am an unapologetic Marxist ... as in Groucho.

"I don't know what they have to say,
It makes no difference anyway,
Whatever it is, I'm against it.
No matter what it is or who commenced it,
I'm against it.

Your proposition may be good,
But let's have one thing understood,
Whatever it is, I'm against it.
And even when you've changed it or condensed it,
I'm against it."

I think Groucho and his brothers would have run circles around our current day political wonks. Great post!

I find it increasingly freightening that people today think that one man...The President of the United States, can wave his magic wand and make EVERYONE happy and not only take all their problems away...but do so without upsetting anyone!

The facts are clear and simple; Our current President was handed a mess...a big mess and anyone that thinks this mess was created in the past 20 months has their heads in the sand. The rhetoric we read and hear is counter productive, hateful and focuses on one man...and that's unfair because there is a Congress and much of what he'd like to do...runs afowl with Congress...no matter what party holds the majority.

Like it or not...complaining about it, pointing the finger at some who you think is to blame and posting opinions on any message board isn't going to change people's minds about the way they feel about our current President or Congress. Until people of America...grow up, understand that this problem will not be fixed in a week, 3 weeks, a few months or 20 months...we will continue to have these very same problems no matter who is the President.

This problem will be here, if our current President is not re-elected, for our next President and he will have the same problems to deal with. There is NO MAGIC Cure! You can spout off all you'd like about what you think is best but in the end...we aren't the ones at the tables, in the conference rooms, in the high profile meetings discussing issues that NONE of us are privy to.

It's not a defeatist position...it's a fact of life here in the US and we need people to understand the complexity of all of this and not put SO MUCH trust in the media...no matter what side they are in support of. Stay informed, gather the true facts and make your own decisions and not those of a particular party, spin doctor or news network.

Fireprof, I admire your compassion for the President and I assume you had the same degree of compassion for his predecessor. A magic wand is not expected. What is expected at this point is focus and sound economic policy. Although a narcissistic and pompous ideologue, the President seems like a nice enough guy. He's just in way over his head. His resume contained nothing to indicate he was ready for an executive position and his performance has confirmed that resumes matter.

You are correct, in that, I have compassion for the Office of the President of the United States of America. I've agreed and disagreed with many...ever since I was old enough to understand the complexity of the office.

Though a "magic wand" is "not expected," it is what most Americans want. They want their particular issues dealt with and they really don't care about anyone else's problems or concerns.

You honestly think that this President is anymore over his head then any of the others we've had? How much does a resume have to have in it in order for you to qualify? Is there a standard? If such standard exists...then how is it that he became President with a substandard resume?

The fact is...there is no standard and we look for people to run for that particular office that has got the balls to do it. I know I won't run for that office...how 'bout you or anyone else that feels they can do better. There isn't a day that goes by the whoever is occupying that seat in the Oval Office isn't faced with multiple crisis' that everyone looks to him/her to fix.

It's just as easy to question every move, decision, indecision, comment, no comment...the President makes as it is to Tuesday Morning QuarterBack every football game you're interested in.

NO ONE can truly understand the mountain of issues that office deals with on a daily basis and we expect this of another human being. He/she is just another human being just like we are. Just because you take the oath of office for the President of the United States doesn't magically give you instant powers to know all, see all, decide correctly everytime and the ability to please every person, group, party and able to address every issue they have that they want you to fix. If so...I'd like to see that resume!

I agree that it is truly the toughest imaginable job in the world. As a human being I also have compassion for the person occupying the position, and no, I would not want that person to be me. To say this man's resume was substandard is a kind understatement that seems consistent with your compassionate nature. This is literally the man's first supervisory position. How did he get elected with that resume? He got the most votes. And it's easy to see how that happened. Voters like to talk about a candidate's qualifications during the campaign, but sad to say in the end, most of us vote for the candidate who makes the best impression, who looks the best on TV, who gives the best speeches, who has the best zingers in the debate. Generally speaking from my perspective, the analysis of the issues and the candidates done by most voters before casting their vote is shamefully shallow. Being an informed voter is hard work, and we tend to put our energy and time into other, more day to day concerns. (I do not put myself consistently above this behavior.) From this current experience, hopefully more of us have learned that as citizens we have a responsibility to approach voting in a more serious and deliberative way.

The mainstream news media used to have the responsibility of investigating and reporting on the background and qualifications of politicians of all stripes. In recent years they have mostly become so biased that they now believe their responsibility has changed. While they continue to dig up as much dirt as can be found on conservatives they act as cheerleaders for all the liberals. As evidence I point to all the Tea Party bashing that has been going on since the Tea Party started posing a credible threat to the liberals' power.

The mainstream media is far to the left of most mainstream Americans. Their declining popularity ought to be enough reason to make them reconsider their positions, but instead they blame the people for bing stupid or uninformed.

It will be interesting to see what happens after next month's election.

Here's a canadate I can get behind.
He has my vote.

Diger

I HAVE DECIDED TO BECOME A WRITE-IN CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT IN THE YEAR 2012..
HERE IS MY PLATFORM:

(1). Any use of the phrase: 'Press 1 for English' is immediately BANNED!!!. English is the official language; speak it or wait outside of our borders until you can.

(2). We will immediately go into a two year isolationist attitude in order to straighten out the greedy big business posture in this country. America will allow NO imports, and we'll do no exports. We will use the 'Wal-Mart 's policy,
'If we ain't got it, you don't need it.' We'll make it here and sell it here!

(3). When imports are allowed, there will be a 100% import tax on it coming in here.

(4). All retired military personnel will be required to man one of the many observation towers located on the southern border of the United States (six month tour). They will be under strict orders not to fire on SOUTHBOUND aliens.

(5). Social Security will immediately return to its original state. If you didn't put nuttin in, you AIN'T getting nuttin out. Neither the President nor any other politician will be able to touch it.

(6). Welfare. -- Checks will be handed out on Fridays, at the end of the 40 hour school week, the successful completion of a urinalysis test for drugs, and passing grades.

(7). Professional Athletes -- Steroids? The FIRST time you check positive you're banned from sports ... for life.

(8). Crime -- We will adopt the Turkish method, i.e., the first time you steal, you lose your right hand. There is no more 'life sentences'. If convicted of murder, you will be put to death by the same method you chose for the victim you killed: gun, knife, strangulation, etc.

(9). One export of ours will be allowed: wheat; because the world needs to eat. However, a bushel of wheat will be the EXACT price of a barrel of oil.

(10). All foreign aid, using American taxpayer money, will immediately cease and the saved money will help to pay off the national debt and, ultimately, lower taxes. When disasters occur around the world, we'll ask The American People if they want to donate to a disaster fund, and each citizen can make the decision as to whether, or not, it's a worthy cause.

(11). The Pledge of Allegiance will be said EVERY day at school and every day in CONGRESS.

(12). The National Anthem will be played at all appropriate ceremonies, sporting events, outings, etc.

My apology is offered if I've stepped on anyone's toes .... nevertheless.....
GOD BLESS AMERICA !
Sincerely, Bill Cosby

Andy,

Obama did indeed inherit a mess. Two wars, an economy in the toilet, massive Bush-era deficits (in contrast to Clinton's budget surplus). Your heartfelt sympathy for the President reminded me of the wonderful headline in The Onion the day after Obama was elected: "Black Man Given Nation's Worst Job".

BTW, Diger, the Bill Cosby "platform" is a complete hoax, long ago disavowed by Mr. Cosby. See snopes.com for details.

Doc - I thought we already covered this on the Tea Party posts. Here's a reminder from my post over there.

Reality check.......The national debt stood at $5.7 Trillion dollars when George Bush took office. It was at $4.0 when Clinton took office.

True, Bush era debt increases of about $4.4 Trillion by far exceed the $1.7 Trillion it grew under Clinton, but Clinton was the benefactor of a fiscally responsible Republican congress for 6 of his 8 years. Interesting to note that the vast majority of the increase under Clinton was during the first two years when he had a Democratic congress. Bush had a split congress for the last 6 of his 8 years.

The budget surpluses you speak of were largely driven by the Republicans who during the Clinton Era supported a constitutional amendment to balance the budget. The dems were against the amendment. At the end of the day, those surpluses were only on paper anyway and never materialized. The gov budgets on a 10 year horizon and on a straight-line basis. Thus, ignoring the impact of the time value of money and providing a misleading look-ahead, Yada Yada Yada.....

Anyway, shouldn't you be enjoying Club O right about now?

See ya, I'm going to go watch Jaun Williams Guest Host the O'Reilly Factor. Can you believe that! Whoda thunk? For those of you who aren't familar with Jaun, he's a big time liberal, always has been and always will be. I can't belive NPR fired him for something 95% of the country likely agrees with. NPR's president definitely uses a plastic mattress pad.

Cheers!

I know it's not serious Doc, but I still like the platform. I loved point #1, I myself refuse to dial 1 for english. My cell phone company changed it's voice mail system and you couldn't set it back up without dialing 1 for english. I called the company three times to complain and ended up taking my phone in to the store to get it set up for me. If every american would complain and refuse to dial 1 it would go away.

I have several questions for those that are so pro Republican/Conservative that they can only answer;

Do you oppose the war?

For what reason are we/were we in Irag and Afghanistan?

Are you against the Mosque being built near the site in Manhattan known as Ground Zero?

Why is it that when people in this country that are willing and in full support of sending our troops to another country to help them....it's called patriotism...but when someone opposes it and thinks that the monies spent on war and helping other countries should be spent here helping our own people without health insurance, homes to live in, food to eat...they are labled as .....liberals?
