This taste of summer is driving me nuts. Of course it has to be busy, so I can't sneak away for a few hours down at the Hook. Like to get my season pass as soon as possible, too, so I don't have to sit in line at the collection booths. NOT looking forward to what the lines might be like with the bridge being reconstructed. So, you overdid it JoAnn? Even now you need sunscreen, I've used it already, and that was just for yard work. Counting the days till I might get down there. BareNJ

Went to Gunnison on Sunday(april 26) after leaving work. It took an hour from the Atlantic Highlands to the entrance of the hook. The beach was busy but not full, very very windy.Thank goodness for windscreens. Mostly regulars there.Get back to the car and leave at 430pm, it took 3hrs to get to the bridge.UGH!!! So this word of warning. GET THERE EARLY AND LEAVE EARLY unless you plan on staying for the sunset.

Greetings all...

Made it to Gunnison yesterday. What a beautiful day. There was an offshore breeze that made it very warm, much warmer than if the wind was coming off the cold water. Speaking of the water, as far as I could tell, I was the only one to go in the water the whole time I was there. Brisk... but refreshing!

The big news for me was that my wife joined me for the first time ever. She was a bit apprehensive and didn't fully embrace the whole "concept", but she was there. I never thought it would happen.

We left the lot at 2:40...relatively early and on a weekday... and it only took about 20 minutes to the bridge. That wasn't bad but you can see it's going to be a problem later in the season.

Looking forward to meeting some of you on the beach this summer...

I don't know the area that well. Visited Gunnison last year for the first time, and we will be going more this year.
Is it worth driving a little south to the "Shrewsbury River Bridge" and detour around or is traffic going to be just as bad

It's all about the entrance in and the exit out. There use to be 2 lanes in, one from the bridge, the other from Sea Bright. The exit out was also 2 lanes. Now it's one in, one out until about May 2011

Yeah that “run around the traffic” of last year by cutting through Long Branch are days of gone past. Now when you enter Sandy Hook you come off the bridge and then to a STOP LIGHT! It’s either you make a right to go to Sea Bright, or you make a LEFT to go to Sandy Hook. When you come out of Sandy Hook, you come to the same light. Go straight, stop at the stop sign to make a left to go to Sea Bright. Or, go to the light and make a left to go over the bridge.

If you’ve been there lately you would have seen the new built like a brick house toll plaza. These guys are playing real hardball. Hey somebody has to pay for that bridge!

So there you have it, go there real early to get a decent parking spot at Gunnison, AND THEN LEAVE EARLY TO GET OUT! For two years we have to do penance. Maybe we’ll get time off for good behavior.

Sounds like NJ to see how screwed up things can get. I understand that there is NOT much room there but, 1 lane in and out. Glad I only go up during the week.

Between the kids and the work schedule we will be lucky to get away to Gunnison three times this year. So it doesn't matter how bad traffic is, we'll just be happy to be there
