Not anywhere in the US. You want to join a private club. A PUBLIC beach means anyone can visit, take pictures, nude or not. The US Park Service allows Gunnison to be Clothing Optional. They also patrol the beach for illegal acts. From Mem day to Labor Day there are also lifeguards on the beach. They help discourage the pervs but, you need to stay where they can see you. If you want a private beach, try Hidden Beach in Mexico (hope you have lots of $$).

Thanks for the response Bob! I'm assuming I have a "worst case scenario" build up in my head and it'll be far more pleasant.
Anywho, I'll be headed down probably the week of May 16-25! One of those days I'll strip and unwind!

Celt,welcome aboard!
I don't think you'll find the gawkers too troublesome.Sometimes, they are mentioned here in a manner disproportionate to their actual nuisance-value.Most of them just wander around stealing furtive glances as they pass, and I've yet to encounter one that couldn't be shooed away easily.
As far as cameras go...Well,I'm pretty sure that everyone in the U.S. (aside from me) has one built into their cell. This is no secret to anyone,of course.Therefore,weasley-looking guys wandering among the throng talking on their phones are watched VERY carefully.I have only seen two confrontations in several years involving cameras. One involved a Russian girl busting some loser and reading him the riot act to the delight of onlookers.(The guy sheepishly deleted all his pics.)The other was far more a skull-and-dagger scenario.
I was talking to a guy near the middle of the beach, when he noticed something behind me.It was after 5,and the snack-bar was closed for the day,but they leave the stand up even when the refreshment truck has departed. And under the counter lurked a little blond twerp with a long lens camera.
Well,my buddy and several other guys took off in the twerp's direction, and the latter bolted from his lair and headed for the boardwalk, with these naked,fist-shaking,shouting maniacs in hot pursuit. It was hysterical! They caught up to him and surrounded him as they called a ranger over, who apparently made the guy delete his disc.
Still,I had to wonder at the legalities of it all.As far as I know, one may photograph anything he pleases on public land. And these days, everyone has a camera in his pocket at all times. So just going out on the street puts you at risk, never mind going to Gunnison.
This is not directed at you-just a general observation-but it seems to me that if it would be personally damaging for someone to be photographed nude, then that person might want to just do his/her sunbathing in the backyard.I don't worry, myself, since all my friends have seen me nude, and my mother doesn't surf porn sites!

Fishman, I felt the same way after reading this young bucks statements. I guess at 20 something he feels the need to express his machismo by "invoking his wrath"

I have read, the majority of jerks are there when it is NOT busy. The more crowded the better. Safer in numbers. It really seemed to have a family atmosphere when we were there. People would walk up to strangers and ask about their tattoo's or body peircings, more friendly than any clothed beach I've been too. Very nice beach. Can't wait for nice weather!!! Some of those piercings look awfully painfull- YOUCH- I'm not a big fan of pain.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
I appreciate the responses and I think that I'm looking at it at an extreme. To be honest, I was worried because my girlfriend is an actress (no, not a movie star, but also not a struggling "wannabe" -- she has done both tv and film). Anywho, it was her I was worried about...why haven't I talked to her about it? I should let her know there is a chance of her being shot. It's not the fear of being "filmed" it's what or where that photo will be found. Some sleeze porn site? Some porn add? That's all.
We simply want to go down and unwind. It's somewhat disappointed - albeit a reality -- that these voyeurs exist.

It has nothing to do with machismo. It has to do with respecting one's privacy (I understand the irony of saying that when nude on a public beach). What I mean is, (in my personal opinion) these lurkers who are taking hidden snapshots are doing it for one reason and one reason only and it's not because they're photographers. Because if they simply "wanted a picture" you can politely go up to him/her/them and request one. No, they're hiding and have the potential to post it on the internet - out of context. THAT is what I have a problem with, and yes if my "young buck/macho" statement makes you roll your eyes, then so be it.
If my girlfriend goes to a beach - whether nude or not - and gets her photo taken and it's posted out of context or is a negative image of her...YES, I take that damn personal.
If your family are nudist and your teenage daughter or son decide "Heck! I'm going to be naked!" And some creep is taking pictures...you as a parent wouldn't interfere?

I have seen a few topless (18-21) females. The few nude children have been quite young (4-8). There are more families on the weekend. A 16-17 year old with a car could visit Gunnison. I'm quite sure some have(they've posted here). They do NOT check ID at the gate.

Just about every time I go,I see families with young children. The kids have a blast splashing around in the sea,and their enthusiasm is contagious.I've also seen the very old there.(One guy even used a walker to get around.Had to be pushing 90.)College- and high-school age people, too. While the median age at Gunnison is probably 40-something,you see everyone from babies to geezers there.
Personally,I love it when all ages are represented.Makes for a more festive atmosphere,it lends an air of community to the place, and it tends to encourage everyone to mind their manners.

It’s a nude beach! People have eyes and like everyone’s been saying, ABOUT 99% of them folks got a CELL PHONE WITH A CAMERA! And don’t forget all those planes that fly by. Do you want to have everyone check their cell phone at the door and use a SAM to blow them planes out of the sky?
2 years ago we had this same exchange. A few folks think that we all are entitled to privacy. You can have all the privacy you want behind a curtain in a sound proof cubicle.
I said it before and I will repeat myself, if you as a guy can make Charles Atlas look like a wimp and your lady looks as if she fell from the heavens themselves, then your fears are well warranted. If you can not fit those impossible forms then you ain’t got nutting that nobody ain’t never seen before. Get over yourselves.
Are there people who leer? Yep, there are. They have eyes. Are there people who photograph young children? Yep, there are. Cameras are everywhere.
In this country, and come to think of it, in many parts of the world, almost anyone can have “those” kind of thoughts. As of yet, we do not have thought control police. What we do have is common sense. And a few choice nasty laws to put the fear of government into anyone who puts thought into potential action. Could you end up on some “web site of dubious nature”? Sure, just ask them poor celebs. Do you have any recourse? Nope, and neither do the rich and famous.
Hey, it’s a free country, and so are a lot more places around the world. Get use to it.

Having spent time at both (my uncle lives in Long Beach and I escape to Lighthouse beach often enough) - I hands down prefer Gunnison - and you should too. The problem with the lighthouse beach is there are a lot of clothed people walking back and forth between the beaches, and it is a very narrow beach. On the other hand, Gunnison is a very wide beach, but the length is not nearly as long as lighthouse beach. Gunnison also has lifeguards and rangers on duty to preserve order, whereas there is very little oversight of what goes on on Lighthouse beach. I witnessed a couple having sex not 100' from me there. Also they sell beer on the beach at Gunnison - isn't that enough by itself? The drive might be almost two hours between the two in traffic, but is probably less though I haven't ever driven between the two. I drive up from central MD and it takes me over 3 hours, sometimes 4. Well worth it. The parking is also A LOT closer.

Hello all. I am a 22 yr old college student from Long Island. Been a nudist since I was 4. I live about 10 minutes away from Lighthouse beach but have heard many ppl talk about Gunnison's Beach and was wondering if it is worth the trip. My current girlfriend is very reserved and shy and I wanna take her to the beach this summer. She recently joined me at a Travasun's party and had a good time, but kept her close on. Bottom line, I would like to meet up with some ppl from the forum if possible. Maybe make things a bit easier on her and make her more comfortable.
