Is there another, safer lot to access the beach? Is there a better area than that right next to the volleyball net? Farther south? North?
I've had a couple of bad experiences in this area also. I thought since there was a lifeguard post nearby that is would deter obnoxious behavior. My best solution so far was to park myself closer to the beach and others.

Jenni, The main lot, that says parking for area G, is the closest. Not sure if the other lot, which would mean a further walk to the bathroom, snack stand area, is any better, or safer. You would have to walk along the road that runs off the one that runs between the beach and the lot. There is no type of path or sidewalk, so doubt it is a safer way. As far as the beach goes, Any area can be hit or miss. I usually sit in the area just past the volleyball net, heading towards the water. You see very little perverted activity there during the summer, mainly because the beach is so crowded there, and none of the people I know will stand for it. In fact, we threw off 2 guys this past summer for taking pictures without anyone's consent. Ihave never gone after Labor Day, so i can not tell you what might be a good option as far as the beach goes. Maybe kicking sand in the face of these losers might get rid of them. lol No matter what, don't let them stop you, or anyone else, from enjoying the beach. And the lifestyle.

Hi all - first-time poster here --
I see this thread started in 2002. I've been to Gunnison beach several times, starting in 2004, and while I would not say lewdness is rampant, it is definitely going on, and often with staggering openness. For example: On my first visit, I was lying on my towel and looking around and suddenly realized that two men near me appeared to be engaged in something. One man was lying on a towel face down, and the other was completely on top of him, also face down. I thought, well, maybe they're just cuddling, but then the top man raised his pelvis to reveal his erection that he then thrust back into his partner's butt. I think they were doing an in-between-the-legs hump rather than actual intercourse, but still. I had gone expecting to see new things, but seeing this in broad daylight, I was speechless. I heard a couple people nearby say things like "<gasp> am I seeing what I think I am?" and that kind of thing. I did not feel experienced enough of a Gunnison-goer to chastise them, but if I saw that now I would. I am gay, but I do not go to a nude beach for sex. It's the furthest thing from my mind. (ok, maybe not THE furthest, but definitely not my goal.) I'm afraid there are a lot of men who seem to do just that for whatever reason (being closeted, probably), and my fear is that their antics will make things more difficult for the rest of us or even get the beach closed altogether.
It's important to make it clear that you will not stand for this kind of thing. Public displays of affection between partners are one thing, but there are some acts that even to those on a nude beach should not be seen outside the bedroom, or at least not in the presence of others. What I saw that first time was a pretty extreme example, but you are likely to see other surprisingly open sexual acts if you're paying attention. You might have a better chance of avoiding them if you sit among the straight folks.
I visited yesterday (Oct 4 2006) and had a great time. I had one guy (clothed) plant himself right in front of me and stand staring (completely unwelcome, of course). I considered saying something blunt to dismiss him, but in the end just got up and went for a walk. It was an amazing feeling to walk around for probably a mile or more completely nude, leaving my towel, clothes, belongings, car keys - everything - sitting back where I had left them. I wanted it to last forever. Other than a few cruisy looks and overt hand stroking as I walked past, I did not see much overt activity yesterday. There was one guy with binoculars completely shamelessly pointing them towards a cluster of people, and as others have noted a few gangs of clothed young people who were clearly there just to gawk. But none of that was enough to ruin the experience for me.

I met a woman who introduced me to the joys of nude sunbathing this past year.I so enjoyed it in her private backyard, that I wanted to take it a step further, and visit a nude beach.I love the water and the sun,and I suddenly found myself resenting the mandate to wear swim trunks,so we considered our options...
We had business on Cape Cod in July, and we decided to hit Gay Head on Martha's Vineyard.(They're trying to get people to call it Moshup Beach these days, for obvious reasons.)That beach is more-or-less officially CO,I hear.Due to time constraints, however,we settled for nearby South Cape Beach.Nudity there is "kind of" tolerated, as long as you're far enough away from the clothed beach to be practically invisible to those folks. It was fun,but we were on our own, aside from a 60-ish, naked,surf-fisherman.(That guy was great.)After getting our feet wet there,we headed down to Gunnison for a couple of week-days in August.
The weather was so-so at best,as it was most of the summer in the Northeast, but there were 100-200 people out there just the same. The first day,in our ignorance of the local customs,we gravitated to the gay section, which is south(to the right)of the main entrance. There were definitely a few looky-Lou's that day,but only one man was blatant enough to be truly annoying. He was a fat,50-ish guy wearing Bob Dylan sunglasses. He squatted in front of us not 10 feet away, and proceeded to sift through the pebbles there as though they were the finest of their kind on the entire mile-long strand. He sneakily peered at us over his glasses every few seconds, while absent-mindedly picking through the beach debris, chimpanzee-like.After a few minutes of this,I stood up and rousted him.I'm not sure if I was more put-off by his gawking,or by the fact that his corpulent form obscured our view of the Manhattan skyline...Either way,he mumbled something incoherent and obligingly moved on.
I love to run on the beach,so at one point I donned my trunks(I'm still not ready to jog naked past the masses),and took off for a 2-mile trip. When I returned,my GF informed me that that the "beach zombies"(as we had come to describe the men homing in on the single women a la the flesh-eaters in "Night of the Living Dead")had converged on her en masse, and had only dispersed as I was seen returning. She's no prude, and certainly not shy,but that had made her feel uneasy.
My point here is that there will be gawkers at Gunnison, but that it's really a minor problem for the most part.We had a great time, despite that stuff. The water was warm(at least 74 F.),the waves were of the usual Jersey quality, and the view is spectacular.Couples can avoid the worst of the zombie-parade,as we found out on Day Two...
Thanks to all who shared their experiences.I read each one with interest.I'll be back with the Day Two account soon, which was considerably more interesting than the above.

Hello everyone, I want to say a big hello to everyone that is out there. All the new members hello and welcome to you all. I want to say to all those new or thinking about going to Gunnison to give it a try. Prior to this summer I had only gone to AANR resorts but not Gunnison. I went there twice this summer and it was absolutely amazing. I am going to be in London for most of the coming summer but I definately plan on making at least one day trip down there. I was wondering if there would be anyone interested in going there with me. I know this is way way way in advance but I figure it would give me some time to get to know you. I'm 24 years old, male and a college student and Iraq vet. If anyone is interested please contact me at mc38a3p@yahoo.com
Thanks and have a pleasent evening

Good afternoon folks :)
I am new here. I have been looking for some info on Gunnison and wanted to see if the folks here could help with some answers :)
I visited Gunnison once a couple years ago, and will plainly admit I was too shy to bear it all...I tried, but could not get up the nerve to do it so eventually walked to the clothed area because I did not want to offend anyone who was following the clothing optional lifestyle.
Since then, however, I have spent some time in Europe and have become a little more comfortable with myself. I am not sure if I am ready to go 100% nude yet, but what I do want to try is wearing a thong. I have a couple of thong and g-srting style suits from my days in Europe and very much enjoyed wearing them. Minimal tan lines yet just the tiniest bit of modesty. Clearly, however, they are NOT wearable at most American beaches.
While my ultimate goal is to just go completely nude, in the meantine, what is the code of etiquette regarding these suits? Are thongs and g strings acceptable? Is there a rule against them? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

It's a public beach. There are no laws against g-strings. However, why go to a nude beach if you're going to keep your clothes on?! Cheri

People will notice you more if you're wearing a g-string or thong than if you go without as you'll be in the minority...so if you really want more attention....

Hey all. Glad the winter is almost done, and we will all be heading back to Gunnison. Anyone know if they are raising the price of the season pass this summer? Seems like everything else in this area is going up, so I was wondering if the powers that be at Sandy Hook are going to do the same. No way anyone can beat $50.00 for a season pass to anyplace. Let us know, if you are aware of anything. BareNJ

I have been reading posts here for several weeks. I just figured out this is in NJ. I go to Atlantic City several times a year. The nice people at Bally's are comping me 2 night in May(Sun-Thurs exc Mem weekend). This would seem like a reasonable day trip from there. I have not read all 11 pages of this but, my understanding is the beach is open all year and the Life Guards are there Mem-Labor Day. I just order a red "N" hat from TNS (I just recently joined). That seemed like a good way to identify me as a safe single male on the beach. I would be interested in the thoughts of others on seeing someone with a hat, towel etc (I don't plan on wearing a T-shirt!!) with a AANR or N logo. Other than writing I AM NOT A PERVERT on my back this seemed like a good idea. Many of you have written that you are reluctant to just start a conversation with someone on the beach. I just came back from Las Vegas. I don't talk to people in the casinos. The slots are noisy and folks are by necessity carry cash. They tend to be pretty wary. Was able to get some sun at the pool all three mornings. I always greeted people. They usually returned my "good morning". While this wasn't a beach and I wasn't nude (at least nobody laughed at my string bikini) the situation is similar. Most folks just want to lay in the sun and maybe read. On the second morning I announced to the dozen or so people that there was more sun on a deck above the pool. Within 10 mins the whole group had followed me up. I only stayed for an hour but, did exchange a few words with a couple people. I still have ice in my yard so just thinking about warmer weather is nice.

http://www.nps.gov/gate/planyourvisit/feesandreservations.htm as far as this page shows, updated 1/07, it looks like the price is going to be $50 again for the seasonal shades on, clothes off

Thanks, KindBill, I figured they would not raise it, at least not yet. You just can't beat that bargin of a proce for a whole summer of going to any beach, especially a nude one. I will be one of the first in line Memorial Day weekend, and every other day I can get down there. lol Always remember to arrive early so you can get a decent parking spot in lot G. Otherwise, that walk from the auxiliary lot can be gruesome, especially on a hot day. Let's get nude and steal some sun, Bare NJ
