The boyfriend and I took turns painting the bathroom which had brown wood paneling before combined with ugly wallpaper. It was totally demoralizing. Now, its electric blue, my landlord says it looks like a big bowl of water. We hung a nautical decorative net and put stuffed animals like lobsters and turtles in there. I stand in my bathroom and I don't feel depressed, I feel calm, collected, and centered. I really believe Martha Stewart would be jealous. Has anyone else tackled a home improvement project to beat the wintertime blues, especially where adding a nice color with a fresh coat of paint is concerned??

Melissa, you may want to consider bringing sweatpants and sweatshirt with you onto the beach just in case. Being a former frequent visitor to Gunnison (before I moved away) the temperatures can feel about 15 degrees colder there, especially this time of the year with the seabreeze blowing onshore off that frigid cold ocean water.

even if it isnt true beach weather, the sight of the ocean and the waves and the bratty seagulls tend to lift the spirits, especially if it is a sunny day.

Posted - 02/28/2004 : 11:52:11 PM I am soooooo ready for Spring! I'm in the process of redecorating my own space, since I share an apartment with 3 other people. The landlord painted all the rooms either a creamy yellow or a dead blech beige. *My* room's beige However, I've added bright white lace curtains and uncovered chestnut woodwork under the old white paint...so far. I'm also re-framing and matting some large art prints and a couple of my own paintings to brighten the walls.Next step is some kitty-friendly houseplants and my space will be almost perfect! I also have switched all the lightbulbs in here to GE "Reveal" bulbs...they're full spectrum and are pretty close to daylight...they run about $3.99 apiece at Walmart. They've helped alot. I can hardly wait to be able to open the windows again tho.... Gilliane *in Auburn, which had it's first sunny day in quite awhile today |

The hotel was also a brewery, good beer too... One stay I stayed across the court from where the beer was made, another time above. |

Posted - 02/28/2004 : 02:19:02 AM I have always heard that people that lived in the mountains got cabin fever in the winter. Spring time is my favourite time of the year too, I guess because I have been cooped up so long during the winter. One thing I do is have lots of house plants and flowers in the house, helps add some cheer to a dreary rainy winters day.

Conster, I remember getting seasonal affective disorder a lot when I was in my early 20's. I lived in a mountainous area, and as beautiful as the mountains are in the spring, summer, and fall, in the winter they take on a dead, desolate quality. Springtime was and still is my favorite time of the year, when everything seems to come back to life. I no longer live in the mountains but near the water, and being married with kids helps ward off the blues for me too.
I like the idea of home improvement projects in the nude, though. I painted our first child's room in the nude, simply because I didn't have to worry about staining my clothes. My wife thought it was funny and took some pictures!

I used to feel it a lot more in the midwest then in Colorado. I spent some time in Germany living at a hotel with a Pool/Sauna/Sunroom (filled with lights) in the basement. The Sunroom was often busy. |

I think a lot of us get SAD. I don't think it is at all uncommon. Lightening up a room really helps. When I bought my house, the rec-room in the basement was anything but entertaining and inviting. The walls were covered in dark paneling and there is only a small window in that room. Even with the lights on, it was dark and dreary. I painted it a light blue, and now the light reflects to the most distant corners from the window. Instant cheer. They say that blue is a calming color too. I think that sometimes any change in scenery will uplift you.
