I don't think that is why most people are nudists. I am a nudist because it makes me feel good. It is a release from the 'textile' world and all its rules on how we are supposed to be. I don't hurt anyone else so no harm no foul!

Not misfits at all Spont. And not out to challenge anything. What I said, (stated another way) is, inform those who don't understand us, but we don't have to force our way of thinking on them, anymore than they should force their way of thinking on us. What I'm saying is this: Just people with different interests. Doing something different occasionaly is fun. If you went to Disneyworld everyday, would it still be fun after a while? No. Variety is what makes life interesting and fun. Being different and creative is interesting. Being the same as everyone else is boring. Being a nudist is not what I am. Being a nudist is not who I am. Being a nudist is just one of thousands of facets of who and what I am. I have many interests in life. Scuba diving for example. Not everyone wants to do it, and not everyone should.
I didn't author this topic to argue, there are enough controversial topics. I authored it to have fun exchanging ideas and to discuss opinons about why we enjoy nudism, and the uniqueness of going nude in the appropriate setting is one of the things I enjoy about it.

I think we need to identify what the word misfit means. In my eyes, a misfit is someone who does not fit in. In terms of nudism, our beliefs that nudity is pleasurable and morally fine does not fit in with the rest of the world. Which means that we are misfits. I'm reminded of the Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer movie in which Rudolf is called a misfit.
However, Webster's Dictionary identifies a misfit as: 1) An improper fit; 2) Someone who is badly adjusted to his or her environment. The first definition is similar to how I've always used the word misfit and I don't think it's necessarily a negative term. For example, someone with a genius IQ who is able to understand things in a different way than others has an improper fit in many segment of society but that's not necessarily bad. The second definition of misfit is more judgemental and I don't think nudists fall under that definition at all.
This is probably far more information than anybody wanted, but I love words and I wanted to clarify what we may be talking about.

I thought this might be a good topic for my first post on this site. There are many things that I enjoy about naturism. Sure, it feels good to be nude, and especially outside. For me, it goes slightly deeper than just the feeling on the surface. I need to feel the energy that comes from being nude in nature. I notice it less when clothed. I have spent a lot of time in nature, clothed and unclothed. The energy just seems to be more intense when nude. We are a part of nature, and I need to feel that by standing barefoot in grass, on sand, in the woods, wherever, and at the same time, having the sun on my skin, as well as the wind, and even the rain sometimes. The energy from nature is all around, I just feel it more when I'm not shielding myself from it. Perhaps I'll have more to say on the subject later on. Thanks for letting me post.

Welcome nothreads!
You offer interesting perspectives-that's what I was looking for in this topic. What makes it enjoyable. When the curious read these, maybe then some of them will understand how we feel and why we chose the lifestyle. Thanks for the input.

Welcome aboard Nothreads!
Melissa, I like the second definition: "Someone who is badly adjusted to his or her environment"
It makes me think that textiles are "misfits", badly adjusting to their environment by wearing hot and stuffy clothes. ;-)

Nudeisntlewd,
Please don't be offended... I was merely making an observation and challenging popular thought. The question made me think more about my own thoughts and opinions on the subject of "what i enjoy about naturism". Certainly no harm intended.

Spontanudity,
No offense taken. Hope I didn't sound like I was reacting harshly. I just had the impression that you had the wrong idea about what I was saying, and I felt I had to clarify myself. When I wrote the post, my worry was actually that people might think that I get some kind of wierd thrill from going nude. ("I think there is an undenyable exhilaration in the experience, especially the first time.")
What I'm trying to do is get other people to express their ideas about the topic, to better understand for myself, what our group thinks and how others may perceive us. That certainly is happening! The ideas expressed are helpful to me, and sometimes help me see reasons that I identify with, that I never would have thought of or been able to express myself.
Thanks for your input!

Though we naturists, are still a microcosm of society, we still have differing philosophies, opinions and belief. We still have that one thing in common that brings us together, the enjoyment of nudity.
What we like about naturism is that even with perfect strangers you can sit and find out who that person really is. The walls, protection, the facade is down and you get to know that person inside. It doesn't happen immediately but quite a bit sooner than if you met someone at a clothed party. There is something about being nude in a social setting that cuts through all the BS. No trying to impress anyone, we are equals and we can really get to know one another.
All that and we hate to wear clothes, well I do, my wife still likes her clothes at times.

Randy,
No worries mate... I knew what you were saying, but thought I'd ask the difficult questions to see what responses we'd get back... Its turned to be very interesting and i've learnt a lot.

I've learned a lot too, Spontanudity. People are really expressing themselves here. I'm glad about that. You sure got me to thinking. I do love a lively discussion with exchange of ideas!
(Hey, mark your calendar-I wrote a fairly short response!)

Randy,
I guess that's why forums were invented... to create discussion in order to learn from others opinions. Either way forums, by nature, are always going to be argumentative. I think that's the best thing about them.

i actually went to my first social nude event (bowling), because i needed to know that i could do it, not having grown up around the lifestyle at all, not knowing anyone that was a nudist, and because ive been pioneer-ish during my life enough to know that when i feel its time to face a "fear", its always better to face it and be better for it. it was the next logical step. ive always enjoyed doing things nude. when i wear clothes, i feel like im in some kind of "mold" i have to fit in and quite literally, thats what it is. being in the mold feels trapping and heavy. so freedom is why i like being nude. being myself. especially around other nudists. its much easier to make friends. bowling...ive gone 3 times so far. and ive hiked nude. and camped nude. outdoors feels really good and natural. i guess its a stronger feeling of being accepted, too. no one cares what you look like...its who you are thats important. and that feels as good or better than the physical condition of being nude. doesnt it?
