I spent two days at Hippy Hollow, 24 & 25 March 2011. My first large group, all-day nudist experience, I didn't use enough sunblock 1st day, and ended up with seven stitches after slipping on moss while getting into the water, but no kidding, I number them among the best two days of my life! Friendliest people on earth - all I had to do was start up a conversation, and even as a single 50-ish yr old guy, was immediately accepted in four different groups ranging from couples to 20 people, ages ranging from 20 - 60. Some were regulars, some first timers like me. AWESOME, if I didn't live 900 miles away, I'd be there every weekend.

Wherever you find yourself in the buff, PLEASE go out of your way to say hi to others. It is so much more fun laughing and learning about other like-minded people. If I hadn't reached out, the days of sunning would have been boring and just a curiosity.

Specifics: $12/car entrance fee, clothing required only in the parking lot. The lake is just steps from the parking lot, and there is a paved path at least a mile long to stroll in any state of dress to different places around the lake. The beach consists of huge boulders, no sand. There are flush toilets but no other amenities like a snack bar. There is no camping allowed, that would have been really neat. Rangers were walking around with binocs, watching for improper activity, and therefore the women were very comfortable. The gender mix might have been 80/20, but much higher in the groups I gravitated to, so I had lots of women to enjoy chatting with. The regulars said the water level was low. The water temps are on the rise, and while many folks wouldn't get into the high 60's F water, I swam both days, once for at least a 1/2 hour. Air temps were in high 80's - low 90's.

Ouch, 7 stitches!! Sorry to hear that. I thought you didn't have a stitch on when you were at Hippy Hollow. Never mind my weird humor.

Amen, to going out of your way to say hi to people. The person you say hi to might not have had anyone to tell them hi.

I wish I could go to Hippie Hollow, but I can't go that far due to a disability. Still, though I can at least go to a small nudist resort and Lake Tahoe's own nudist beach.

Ah, such fond, if a bit hazy, memories you bring up! If I die of melanoma, I can trace it back to an epic burn I got at HH back in the day. I'm glad to hear the scene is alive and well. It's a good example of what can happen when well-intentioned nudists and enlightened law enforcement work together. HH and Haulover should serve as models for the rest of the country.

It's good to get a real report. Just the other day I read on Yelp that Hippy Hallow was nothing more than a few old, fat men hanging out. Probably written by a textile...

That is the old stereotype of Hippy hollow that I have heard since the 80's when I went as a curious teenager. The mix of people has always been greatly varied. Now that I have tried nudism, I understand the enjoyment of those people I saw in my youth. I can't wait to go back when I visit the folks in Austin.

As long as there are 50,000+ students at the University of Texas, Hippie Hollow will never become the exclusive domain of old fat men.

Why, there is Doc! Don't worry about the fat old man problem -- I'm staying slim on my veggie diet. If I can ever get to HH, I'll make them respect us veterans of life.

Of course, young men are fatter these days than they were back in the pre-personal computer age.

HH sounds ideal if you bring some suntan lotion; the healthful kind, and a mini-umbrella that offers a 30 rating of sun protection.

Keep in mind, Hippie Hollow is like most other clothing optional venues - sometimes you hit it right and sometimes not. Rest assured, sometimes it does fit the mostly fat old men label - haha. And then other times, it is a great mix of all adult ages, sizes, personalities, etc. (I say adult ages because kids were banned back in the early to mid-90s, but prior to that, families were permitted). And being clothing optional, there are almost always a fair amount of textiles visiting, some courteous and there for fun and just checking things out, and some that fit the obnoxious gawking variety. There are certainly a fair amount of regulars there and usually they are very friendly. But have seen the same friendly regulars get belligerent as heck on occassion, possbily from too much drinking or other things gone bad like too many people taking up their favorite spot that they consider theirs from years of attendance (sort of like sitting in the wrong pew in church where some elderly couple has been sitting for the past 30 years - talk about the stare of death). Striking up a conversation definitely helps in any situation and especially with nudists - most are all to happy to welcome others into the lifestyle and location of choice. The rangers do a good job of keeping things cool and will stop and chat to anyone who cares to say a few words. And people do seek them out to help sort out problems if something is observed that doesn't fit park rules or makes others uncomfortable. Overall, it's amazing to have a legal nude area on a lake within less than 30 minutes of a major city like Austin. Very cool.
