From the yahoo group uknaturistsandnudists@yahoogroups.com Mid-Winter Naturist Festival 2/14-2/18/2003
Frank and Deanna attended their first festival which was held at Sunsport Gardens Nudist Resort, Loxahatchee, Florida. It was sponsored by the Palm Beach Naturists and Sunsport Gardens. Naturists gathered from throughout Florida, North America and Canada. Participants had over a 135 events to choose to attend. Since it was impossible to attend all events, this summary represents only those events that Frank and Deanna attended. This is also a personal summary and should not be construed as an official summary of the festival.
Among the list of workshops or seminars, there were many that related to nudism activism and strategies to preserve nude beaches and nudist rights in Florida, North America and Canada. Frank and Deanna attended several of these. Since it was their first festival, they both found this information very educational and informative about the political climate related to nudism especially in Florida but also other states and in Canada. Representatives from naturists groups in other states presented updates on issues in their areas or groups.
Frank attended "NAC: Protective Naturists Rights: National Overview." Latest legislative bills and court decisions were reported related mostly to public swims, nude beaches and nudism in the woods. Deanna attended "Naturist History in Florida", "Topfreedom in Florida: What's Next?" and "Topfreedom" workshops. These reported history and court decisions related to top freedom issues in Florida and New York. Being uninformed that top freedom rights for women were being fought in the court system, Deanna enjoyed being educated on the issue. Top freedom rights originated primarily because of breast-feeding mothers being cited for breast-feeding in public. Top freedom is now allowed in New York anywhere that men are allowed to go top free.
"Florida Naturist Groups: Sharing Information and Strengthening Communication" and "The Role of NAC/NEF Area Representatives" both presented what is going on in area groups and states. Strategies to advance nudism and combat anti-nudist agendas by conservative political and religious groups were explored. Deanna learned that there is a group that is determined to shut down nudist clubs and nude beaches very systematically using adult entertainment laws and ruse of protecting children from nudity. By first prohibiting children from events or beaches, they can then define nudism as adult entertainment and then pursue legal action related to adult entertainment zoning and ordinances. Lobbyists are strategically placed in state and national governments, but on the local level the naturists groups must rely on a network to report any legal actions being pursued on the county and city level.
"Where To Go Nude in Florida" informed about the nude beaches recognized by government officially and beaches not recognized yet but being pursued by naturists groups. It was also reported the number of beaches that used to be nude but rights have been taken away in past decades. Nude Beaches should not be taken for granted. These rights are under attack all the time. Haulover Beach is one beach that is publicly recognized. There are ambassadors from the naturist group that patrol it and the groups also volunteers to help with cleanup and improvement projects. They have a very good working relationship with the government officials. In general, the officials speak highly of the beach and attendees and have said there is less problems on the clothing-optional part of the beach than the textile part.
"Advancing Acceptance of Social Nudity" discussed how community involvement is one avenue to advance and protect social nudity. Several advocated becoming involved in the local community in fund-raising groups and parti
