The city of Selma, Alabama just enacted a law which makes it illegal for people to wear their pants at a level of more than three inches below the waist. I don't like that style at all myself. I think it looks stupid. But it is not even a case of anyone's skin showing (gasp!), but is instead an instance where the city fathers have apparently decided to become style police.

Whatever the reasons the city would cite, I don't think it is a good idea to legislate this way. I am interested in what others think on this.

Taxman, the law may well be racist, but the city of Selma is populated with a very high percentage of blacks. I don't know for sure, but I would bet that the city council is mostly, if not completely populated by black individuals. It might make a legal challenge on that basis a little more difficult.

back in the 70's i had a old math teacher that happened to also be a preacher, if you came into his classroom with your shirt tail untucked he would stop and ask where you were going, you would immediately apologize and go out the door and tuck it in and no you couldn't tuck it in in his class room. if a girl came in and her dress/skirt was to short he stopped her to, have no idea where she went or what she did. yes we need alot of control in the classrooms and at home. it took me some years to realized how much we need teahers like him again,

If one digs deap enough, you may find this is a racist law.

Other states in the past have tried this. The law was aimed right at the black kids.

As mentioned a lot, why make them change? It just makes the law enforcement job easier.

How about the police just confiscates their pants?

Another way to deal with these "crotch-down-at-their-knees" punks is for all businesses in town refuse to let them do business there. E.g., don't let them into a convenience store, or other places they're likely to go.

Another way to make them mad is to take their photo, and hold if for 20 years, and then publish them in the local newspaper. By then, that fad will have become too old-fashioned, and they will be embarressed to be seen. Kinda like the old Nerhu jackets. Cool back in their time, but you wouldn't want to be seen in them now.

We have to be more creative, and less governmental.

Bob, you've hit on the core of the problem. Whereas in your son's case there was parental involvement, (a father's involvement in particular), in the case of many of these young hooligans there is almost none. Legislation may deal with the symptoms, i.e. drooping pants, but not the real problem, which is that there is a wellfare state that inadvertently encourages single-parent families, almost always with only the mother in charge.

i think its their way of showing disrespect, these kid do it at school and dare the teachers to do something about it and if the try the administrators don't stand behind the teachers. i grew up as a teen in the 60's and 70's and we were rebellious to a extent but alot of kids are out of control, my youngest who is now a adult tried the droppy pants a few times, i took a roll of duct tape and told him i would waste a whole roll on holding his pants up, he improved.

I hate the look myself, I just want to grab these kids by the waist of their pants and hoist them up. But I agree that enacting a law about it is ridiculous.

i was watching COPS one night and a droopy pants guy tripped over his pants while he was running from the police, it was hilarious to watch him fall all over his self. i'm not big on government intervention but if one is allowed to walk down the street (male & female) with their draws showing than walking down the street nude should be legal to. flint michigan inacted this a couple years back and will ticket you for it from what i've read.

Drooping pants law is just an overreaction by City Council.

A good example for illustration would be as follows: Let's suppose that a City has a good number of 4x4 owners that like to go off roading. Some of the terrain is mud and gravel. These 4x4's end up back on the road and the mud and gravel falls off everytime they go over a bump. As a result, windshields and paintwork of other vehicles are damaged.

This causes City Council to enact a 'Dirty Car Bylaw'. Now you can get a Ticket just for having a 'dirty car' even if your car's dirt does not have any gravel in it!

Point is: Some kids that have drooping pants are petty criminals. The other 95% are not!

Yeah, makes it hard to climb a fence when you're holding your crotch to keep your pants up.
This isn't "law" but the casino I work at sent out a notice earlier this year. We are required, as part of our uniform, to wear underpants. Not sure what brought that on, and they do not provide us with any kind of undies, but they will take action if you're not wearing any. Not sure who's on that patrol.
Won't be long, we'll all be required to wear long sleeved bathing suits again.
