Just to give you warning, I'm probably going to get myself into trouble in this post... I'm really good at getting in trouble. But I have some questions that I'd like to throw out at the board to see what other people are thinking:

From visiting nudist message boards, talking to other nudists via e-mail and private messages, and attending a nudist swim, it seems that there are far more male nudists than female. I can understand this (well, not really... but work with me here) and even accept it a bit. Until I visit nudist sites that have pictures on it. Most of the sites that I've visited that have pictures show far more women than men in the pictures. Does this perplex anyone else? I mean, if there are more male nudists then it stands to reason that there would be more male nudist pictures than female nudist pictures, right? I don't mean to be a pervert or anything, it's not like I'm LOOKING for male nude pictures, I've just noticed the disproportion in it all. I know it's not the webmaster's fault- they just put up what they're given. Any thoughts on why this occurs? I'm curious as to what others think of this issue.

Thank you for your kind words, sir. Once in a while I seem to find my mental target. Other times guess I don't. Nice to know when I do, so I can use that as example for next time!!

This is from another section of this discussion board discussing the male-to-female-ratio issue, but it applies here:

To warmskin:

You're right on the money. You've hit the whole issue dead-on-target right here: It's usually guys dragging their gals to a resort to try it out.

In my opinion, ...

As I've so adamantly stated above, that is entirely because nobody that I've ever seen in this industry (and I've been around it for many years) really seems to have any idea how to SELL American women on trying out the C.O. Scene.

It's NOT that hard to do; it's really not.

My wife and I are seriously thinking about starting our own C.O. resort that is especially American-women-friendly. There is one other guy and gal who have done this in California, with a small, cozy, intimate resort, and they're doing great. Way to go, you two! You two are true visionaries and trail-blazers! I salute you both!

Actually, in my daydreams, I envision an American-women-friendly resort far surpassing - -. I know how to do the deal too. The biggest pool of money in the entire world (by far, believe me!) is in Europe. That's where I'd go to fund the deal. I know how to pitch the deal, fund it and promote it. Thereafter, become a marketing colossus and then deliver the goods with a resort that they just can't stop talking about ... to everybody they know. Can be done, y'all ... can be done.

Trouble is, at age 53, I'm too mellowed out! At my age, I wanna chill .... not be a C.O. real estate tycoon. I may do it anyway, though, because this whole issue drives me bonkers! Moreover, NOBODY in a position of influence in our lifestyle seems to want to listen.

Doggone it; I'm tired of talking! I'll SHOW them what I mean, how it's done and how simple it really and truly is!

The younger generations of nudists will benefit the most. Good for them! May they enjoy our lifestyle! By the way, our industry also does not seem to know how to appeal to the young that well either! That's another topic! Suffice it to say that understanding the market is the key. Anyway, ...

Women would drag their men to the resort(s) I envision! This much this crusted, C.O. old-timer can tell you: Women can, and often do, become the most passionate and committed nudists. I kid you not. This old fart (That's me!) has seen it many times.

Well, enough. I've said too much already.

Warmskin is right on. Way to say it, man. You're right on ... period.

Peace.

P.S.:

All of you make REALLY GOOD POINTS here in this discussion. Very intelligent bunch! I love it! By the way, HabaneroSting, you're exactly right. Take care, ya'll.

I think men are more common in nudist areas because they are more naturally comfortable being nude around others than females. Also, society puts more stigma on the female body and the male body is largely ignored. You probably see more nudist female photography because females make better subjects in photos than men do, and identity is more important with females than with males. From my observations (women please comment if you disagree) women will tend to participate in an activity if they see other women participating. They will shy away if it looks like a men-only activity and no other women are around.

whitesands,

I know what you mean. There are definitely places like that. And there are other places where the atmosphere seems questionable. Cruising beaches do give genuine nudists a bad name. People deserve to be comfortable and safe when at a nudist venue. That’s the whole idea, right? But some of these beaches are like that, so I guess I can understand why the clubs want to even things out. I don’t care what makes a person tick. No matter their orientation. I just don’t want to see it happen or be pursued or bothered by it. There are good places out there, public and private. Keep looking for a nice place. Don’t give up.

i have been going to a what i thought was a nude beach, its 95% men with the odd woman or two but just lately i have worked out it a gay nude beach with lots of men just walking around the bushes at the back of the sand area, the water to the end of the sand is only 20 metres tops so you can see whats going on behind u. i had a guy sitting just behind me on the sand with jeans and a shirt on 'not beach wear' and within 3 minutes a guy came out of the trees and sat 2 metres from him, at that stage i'm thinking ok maybe their friends but without speaking they both got up and the rest i need not say, men walking around the beach playing with them self with almost full hard on's but the odd girl will still venture there, maybe its because they feel safe because of the sexuality of the men. its not safe for me and why is this not being policed, is it one rule for gays and different rules for straights, confused male.

I welcome nude pregnant women to any resort I am at.

First of all, there is no question that women are more beautiful than men--clothed or otherwise:)

Melissa, I have always wondered about the disproportionate number of males to females--especially when it comes to the posting of photos on websites.

I once went to a c/o swimming area in Lake Wood, Maine. It was a really nice, woodsy environment--but it was ALL guys. I spent a couple of hours there, swimming and sunning--but have always wondered if I had stumbled into a gay area, due simply to the lack of women.

I would love to see more balance in this area. When it is only/mostly men who post messages/photos, I am a bit less comfortable. It ain't a society without a mixed population:).

I think there are a few different reasons why women are fewer on nude beaches...

1) The first time I discovered nudism is when a group of female gawkers asked my brother and I to accompany them to the nude side of Haulover Beach when we were teenagers. One of the girls said "how could you just walk around naked like that?" As if the nudists should be ashamed.

2) Growing up I realized that a lot of young women wanted to go to a nude beach but didn't know a location.

3) Some women didn't have access to a car to get to the beach.

4) Had female friends that thought walking around nude in public was strange.

5) Had a husband or boyfriend that didn't want them to be seen in the nude. These men were also insecure about taking their clothes off around other men. Some men refuse to wear shorts or wear shorts that come down to their ankles.

6) Some women want to be seen nude in public but don't want to conversate with anyone on the beach. When too much attention is paid to them they feel the need to return with a male. Many feel harrassed by the beach regulars.

7) Some women have body image issues. I was told by a woman wearing a bikini at Gunnison that only my girlfriend and I should be on a nude beach. She found us to be attractive and the majority of the other beachgoers to be too old, overweight or skinny.

8) My wife and I continued to go to nude beaches throughout her pregnancy. While some of her friends thought nude beaches were cool, they didn't think it was okay to go while you were pregnant.

You're right Cheri, overt sexuality is not considered appropriate or condoned in a nudist setting. So for the truly not uptight, it isn’t a concern. Still, deep down for everyone, psychologically there is a feeling of safety in numbers. It’s that feeling of not being alone and vulnerable. That’s why we’re here together at NRO. We are among friends with a common interest so we’re not alone; we don’t feel different. Also, males in my opinion tend to be a little more aggressive no matter what their sexual orientation. I think that it’s just part of our nature. That’s not necessarily bad. We must be that way for a reason or reasons genetically. I also think that people in general are social animals but still have a tendency to unconsciously build barriers against other people for their own feeling of security. So I can’t fault anyone for wanting to be with someone else if they feel that by doing so, they won’t be approached by someone that they may feel threatened by-whether real or imagined.

I agree with you Spontanudity, but I have also been propositioned at a club, but not as often as at the beach. As long as my hubby is right next to me, guys usually behave theirselves. We have had single women sit with us at the beach because they felt safer in a group. The feeling amoung a lot of single women is that you are fare game at a nude beach. Most women do not mind men coming up and talking to them at the nude beach, its just when the topic turns to sex that women feels uncomfortable.

Kim =^.^=

what about as a straight male, would couples be good with a male sitting next to them to stop the gay men coming over for a close up/chat?

This trend disturbs me. Even in the positive setting that nudism provides, the fear and ignorance of mankind remains prevalent. If we don't learn to be able to trust and respect one another equally, the world is doomed to remain in the same horrible condition that it's in, or get worse. When nations advocate for peace, but remain one button press away from destroying all of civilization, just in case, there's a huge problem. Guarded trust is not true trust. Despite all of mankind's advancements over the centuries, we are still governed by primal instincts, though they are veiled in a myriad of societal cloaks. Even those who wish to avoid these trappings are forced to follow them in order to survive. We as a species are so close to being able to shed these basic drives, and move into a new age mankind, but we're so steeped in tradition, so blinded by falsehoods, that we may never be able to take that important step.

Sorry for the tangent, but it's been on my mind for some time now. I could go on forever, talking about the problems in the world, and my ideas for solving them, but there's not enough room on this forum for all of my words. I may actually write a book on it, though what I have to say may piss off a whole lot of people. Anyway, getting more women, and people in general, into nudism is a good step towards creating a better world. Keep it up.

Nude Al,

great article.

Utne is one of the few zines around to be able to present articles with openness and a little tongue in cheek too.

it wold be useful as a tool for any sort of transition, but it is perfect for the transition to healthy nudity

Thanks NudeAl - appreciate your understanding and input - the article is great too - the issues addressed are most all that affect me and my peers. I just wish I could have been freed at age 15 as the girls at the BIK were/are. Add to these girls struggles with body image, etc., 30, 40 or 50 more years of living under these misconceptions and the fact that most public nudity is with both genders, and the ability to take the leap of faith into nudism is exponentially more difficult and overwhelming. I count myself lucky to have started the journey as I have and will continue to talk to my friends about the freedom I've experienced as I would like them to enjoy the experience as well in this life - there's nothing like it. Funny how when I chat with a seasoned nudist I feel like a newbie and when I talk to my non nudist friends I feel like the seasoned nudist...no better way to learn than to teach...

I just found this link on another site that illustrates this point very well. It's a good read I think and written from the right perspective.
