Posted - 08/27/2005 : 7:25:13 PM Hello all, new to the org. and new to the ft. myers area, i am wondering if bowmans beach is still used as a clothing optional beach? If not does anyone know of one accessible by car in this area. When i lived on long island went to fire island lighthouse beach at robert moses state park. |

Have the Beach Patrol go through periodically to deal with bad behavior, just like everywhere else on the beach. Maybe even charge a modest admission fee. (I'd sure pay it!) Everybody wins. Where's the downside?
Don't you see, Doc? That nakedness stuff, it's just WRONG. I know it said so somewhere in my Bible (I thought), and well, I just gotta save the rest of us civilized people from those pre-verts!
Alas, too few people abide by Harshaw's Second Principle: About 85% of human wisdom is a desire not to meddle in other people's business.

Posted - 07/04/2008 : 09:53:02 AM Tiger, That's a nonlanded club. I've well acquainted with a few from it. Some of them visit Carolina Foothills annual Frog Fest. They are a good group, and I recommend them without reservation to Gwynne.

Posted - 07/03/2008 : 6:05:54 PM I will be attending college in Ft Myers next semester and my husband & I were wondering if there were any landed clubs in the area. I am 46 and he is 57, so living in the dorms didn't seem like a good idea. We own a house in Venice, but have only gone to Lake Como once or twice. Life got too busy to drive that far. We were thinking of buying a trailer now that Wayne is retired and I will be a full time student. It would be nice if Ft Myers has a decent, preferably a nudist camping area.

Posted - 07/06/2006 : 5:24:35 PM My parents have a house on an island not far from Sanibel. Don't know a thing about nude beaches there but miserable people like "churchlady" underscore why I intend to stick with resorts! |

Posted - 06/30/2006 : 11:19:38 AM Update...recap of weeklong visit. If you're interested in stolling the beach au naturel with no hassles, Sanibel ain't the place to go. "Churchlady", a Sanibel resident hell-bent on ridding the island's beaches of all nudity, still stolls the beach, occasionally springing out of the bushes with camera, all in search of nudity which she promptly reports to the Sanibel police. In addition, there's the random police patrols via quiet ATV's, not to mention beach monitoring from the water by both police and sheriff's depts. Sanibel's would-be nude sunbathers are all equipped with binoculars in order to see if anyone's coming before they venture nude from the beach foliage to the water's edge....and when they do, it's normally with swimsuits in hand, just in case. Thongs are OK, and probably g-strings too....but being caught nude results in an arrest for "disturbing the peace" with a mandatory court appearance. |

Posted - 12/20/2005 : 5:18:22 PM Thanks for the update, Goth. Sad about the pines. I guess with the fallen trees still in the water that the fishermen still frequent the place and provide cover for the sheriff's boat that occasionally appears from out of nowhere. Question: is the scrub brush (6-7 ft) foliage still on the beach? If not, it sounds like sunbathers will be visible from a lonnnnng distance. |

Posted - 10/03/2005 : 12:08:21 PM Hi, I'm a local & have been going to Bowman's off & on for years. Since hurricane Charley, it looks much different. All the australian pines are down and it doesn't look as remote. However, I'm still seeing some nudism and toplessness at the north end, where the fallen trees are. I don't know about tansailr's remark about the "churchlady". Never seen her, but I go during the week rather than weekends. The last coupla trips I made, I didn't even see park rangers or police. However, my advice is to wear a thong or g-string just in case. If you've never been before, the hike up is over a mile from the Bowman's footbridge and the hike down from Turner's perhaps a little less. See you there. I'll be one of the dudes wearing a g-string for safety!

Posted - 09/24/2005 : 08:28:38 AM We haven't been to Bowman's since the year prior to the hurricane, so we'd also like to hear some input on this topic. The very small area separating Bowman's from Turner Beach, aka Silver Key, was once a very popular beach where nudity was tolerated. Then...probably 6-7 years ago there was a sexual attack nearby, and some concerned citizens attributed it to the nude beach-types. As a result, the sheriff's dept. now patrols that area at regular intervals daily, as well as a bona-fide dowager (aka "churchlady")who daily inspects the area and calls in the police to arrest nude folks. They even arrested one guy while he was in the bushes changing into his swimsuit! Nevertheless, one could still use this area with thongs and not be hassled. The fallen trees extending from the beach marked the area, but we don't know what it looks like since last year's hurricane. Any new news out there? |
