Posted - 08/12/2008 : 7:22:37 PM I am going to take a trip this weekend to a nudist resort in Oregon, Collins Beach. I was going to plan on swimming in the Ocean, but I had a question. Is it always safe to swim in the ocean nude, because of all the pollution and stuff? Is there any chance I would get an infection of any kind? Please post your response below.

Posted - 08/13/2010 : 10:58:03 PM i was watching a show on tv about sharks and they did mention new smyrna as a tourist site for sharks, think i'll watch from the beach. and a warning for those with little common sense- saw this at the fishing pier at st.augustine , don't swim around a fishing pier where everyone has bloodly bait on their hooks especially at night. saw a couple swimming at night below the pier we stood ther for a while waiting for shark-tail to appear but the swimmers had luck on their side, thank godness it would not have been a pretty sight. |

We visited Queensland in October a few years ago - evidently just before the box jellyish season. But I agree: the prevalence of those 'first-aid' stations every 20 meters or so was a sobering sight. Just a warning sign above a little shelf where a bottle of vinegar would be kept, to ease the pain until the EMTs could arrive. Those Aussies must be a brave lot, to go swimming in those conditions.

Actually, he is doing just the wrong thing. I got a sea nettle (jellyfish) tangled up in my suit while swimming at camp when I was about 10 or 11; if we'd been swimming nude, it would have been a momentary encounter - in the suit, the critter stayed on my skin for several minutes. The resulting discomfort lasted the rest of the day! And my pre-teen psyche was NOT about to get it treated by the "camp nurse".
Swim nude, rinse off easily - no sting.

Posted - 07/18/2010 : 10:02:11 PM The one that swam by was a black tip and we have seen baby bonnet head sharks wash up there also.
You know that New Smyrna Beach is the shark bite capitol of the world don't you?

Posted - 07/07/2010 : 10:14:44 AM So true about the jellfish. We were at a nude beach in Cinque Terre Italy a couple years back, and it must have been 95 degrees and humid, but we could barely go into the water there were so many "medusa," as they called them. Talk about frustrating...

Posted - 07/05/2010 : 9:30:46 PM Seems that once the water temperature becomes reasonably OK, the "nasties" emerge - an especial problem up North in Queensland, where they have a major problem with the justifiably infamous Box Jellyfish, also Irukanja (very small, very painful jellyfish), Stone-Fish, Rays, and the dual problem of Saltwater Crocs, and Sharks! NSW isn't quite so bad, but the water is far from warm, and really not that great to swim in, especially Ocean, because of the rip currents and undertows. Most people stick to the relative safety of swimming pools - even rivers have problems with jellyfish (LOTS of them in the summer!).
Having said thie some of the inland lakes can be really great, especially once the water warms up. Plenty of opportunities to swin and sunbathe naked, especially outside the School Holiday slots!
