Puritanical nudism, is a term that I use to describe nudism that has too many superstitious beliefs. For instance nudists who warn others not to use the words naked, nekkid, and butt-naked when describing someone without clothes. They insist that it isn't appropriate to use. Another thing they don't view appropriate is the word "hey" when confronting someone.
They also consider it lewd to squat, wear piercings, have tattoos, to say hi to a woman, (for the guys), to hug in public, to arrive at a nudist venue without a towel, to not carry a towel with you at all times even if your jogging, to have an erection,(for the guys),to dance close to a woman, to body paint below the waistline, to play twister, to kiss in public, to drink in public, to tell someone they are nice looking, to sit alone and watch others, to show up at a party( that was meant for visitors)without being invited, to do anything leisurely with a minor even with parents permission, to stay more than 3 nights at a nudist venue, to strike up a conversation about anything sexual, to dance using the pelvis, to ask someone if the seat next to them is available, to speak to someone without being spoken to first, and to look anywhere on the body but the face.
These are the invisible rules that others have informed me about. I have also experienced a few of them myself. In my opinion to have all of these political rules, is like saying that the human body is sexual, and to break any of these rules is to imply that a person is misbehaving, or committing a sexual act.
To me these rules are the very factor that is driving away people that would love to experience the nudist lifestyle, but due to puritanical nudism, they don't. So unless puritanical nudism is done away with, there will only be home nudists in the future.
This is my opinion, not meant to offend anyone.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Thanks for the compliments Calmnude. A great deal of the credit goes to Sun Devil Mary who is our Director of Activities. Mary and several of our other members work very hard to be sure we have really sensational parties like the Hawaiian Luau Celebration we had a week ago.

We celebrated our club's 5th anniversary and it was really a great success. We had people join us from many far away places... like Sun Devil Laurie who came from Hawaii... and even several people from another local club that really had a great time..!

Well put, calmnude.

I would never expect any two clubs to be exactly alike, even if the rules were the same word for word. The people make the difference.

I've advised people who have expressed an interest in nudism to do their homework and get as much info on a club before they go. Call ahead and ask questions. Take a tour if they can and I give them a short course on ettiquette.

Papa Shug,

choosing a resort is like shopping for anything else. you have to find one which fits for you and your family.

club members/visitors are representative of the world at large.

and tolerance levels vary with the person.

and some folks just cant handle their alcohol and make fools of themselves or worse. and turn off people.

I posted a message in the FAQ Section that could have fit here as well.

Our young friend has found a resort established by the people who write our tax codes. He has laid out a number of rules from his experience I've never seen or heard of.

What's with the "squatting" issue? Did that come from the days of legs crossed at the ankles and stick out your pinkie(finger) at tea? I saw a couples leap-frog race one time. Nude leap frop is a daring undertaking.

The "three visit rule" intent is two fold. One is your intent as a prospective nudist and the other is your membership dollars. Kills two birds with one stone. I've been to a small club with no maximum visits. I can imagine the summer weekends there need a bouncer on staff.

Commenting on someone's physical appearance in the texile environment can be frought with peril until you get to know them. Why push your luck in the nude until you get to know them?

I haven't been anywhere with a moritorium on sexual conversation subjects. However, every place I've been has people of different sensibilities. I know a retired policeman who is a nudist. I didn't ask him for a donut the first day I met him.

The piercing debate will rage on for a while. Only time will prevail.

The tattoo subject has some extreme possibilities to consider. The gentleman(?) with the FU tattoo in three inch high old english script running from shoulder to shoulder. Didn't bother him, he didn't have to read it. Then what about the young lady with the Harley Davidson emblem tattoed in the middle of the Yehaa Delta? I couldn't bring myself to ask if she had an endorsement deal. Now for balance, consider this. I saw a tattoo on a woman who had a breast removed. From a distance it gave the illusion of a breast. What a profoundly gifted person is able to do that kind of work.

I haven't found an objection to kissing in resort public. I have seen objection to making out in the resort public.

I like to have a drink, sometimes two and I'll get looped once in a while. I can't use all those brain cells anyway. But there are those who do not know when to say "when am I going to learn that I'm a drunk who hits on guys when I'm drunk". I look like a linebacker not a line dancer, but that didn't stop a guy from making a pass at me in front of his own wife. My bouncer days are over, so I expect the club to handle it. The club didn't want to lose the money. My wife freaked out that someone that drunk would not be ejected from the grounds immediately. That club lost my business over a drunk who had been to the club twice in two years.

My last comment I'll reserve for body painting. I've seen it twice. Once a guy showed up for a Halloween party completely black and in black face. I thought I had been kidnapped by aliens. The other time was for St. Paddy's day. That was ok, except for some small children in attendance. I think two guys painting someone below the waist while the kids were around was too much for me.

Minnie,

agreed. cant spread the word if you don't talk to people.

and like any other clubs or organizations, some rules make perfect sense and others are bizarre. as long as the rules aren't too out of line, you just sort of shake your head, and continue doing what you are doing.
naturalgar Posted - 07/21/2004 : 12:54:30 PM
Minnie,

I try to abide by the rules too, but there's alot of etiqutte that needs to be known. When you're a newbe at somthing you may not always know all the proper etiqutte. One time I submitted my pic to a nudist website to use in the profile album one time> It was an inocent picture of me sitting nude on a chair (no erection). But they said "sorry" there's to much emphasis on the genitals...So I just sent them a head shot.

Well, I'm sorry.... I think I've broken almost every rule except for the erection one. I talk to people at a nudist park just like I would anywhere else... yes, even clothed. I'm the only female plumber in Muskogee, OK and when I go out to do jobs I have to talk to people I don't know or else I couldn't get the job done. I agree that if the person acts nervous when you talk to them then it might be better to make sure they know it's just friendly chatter. To me a stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet.

Okay, my 2 cents.

When I go to a club, resort, etc. I abide by their rules because they organized and built up their club. My opinions of what the rules should be may be different, but as long as I am in their club I will abide by their rules.

If I want the rules changed I either work within the club's stucture or I start a place of my own with people who think like me and I can have or not have as many rules as I want.

Whenever I visit a nudist resort I always remember as soon as I arrive that America is a free country, until they allow me access into the gates, then I quickly discard those beliefs for fear of being exiled.

I have never been to an alcohol free nudist venue. I know in the distant past nudists were all against alcohol and tobacco and vegetarians were all the rage etc. but I haven't been around that long. I see no problem with responsible drinking but when a person gets out of control it needs to be addressed.

Most of the clubs an places I now attend have very few rules. I used to belong to a club that prohibited body jewelry of anytype. I now belong to one that is very accepting of it. I myself don't like to wear any jewlery but if someone else wants to so what? The club I go to now is also clothing optional. I wasn't sure about this when I first went there but you know what? If someone wants to wear shorts or whatever I can deal with it. It's just like the nude beach I go to some newbies are afraid to let it all hang out. No big deal.

The drinking rule was a rule that others have complained about....Actually (in my opinion) that rule seems to be a tough rule to regulate, because no on ever knows when a person is sneaking alcohol onto the grounds. So even if the grounds were alcohol free..some people would sneak the alcohol on the grounds, and consume it in their cabins , rooms or tents....and then join the festivities drunk. A lugage check might prevent this from happening. Still others might hide alcohol in their vehicles..so they would have to also do a vehicle check, before allowing anyone access to an alcohol free resort.
I agree that there should be some rules, because without rules there would be complete chaos and anarchy. However too many rules ruins the fun, and prevents people from being social, and enjoying themselves.

Travelites, Inc.,a nonlanded club, (http://pages.prodigy.net/travelites/_wsn/page3.html) has a very few (twelve) bylaws/rules/regs. Most are about membership costs, visitation, and common sense. These were implemented so that should a transgression occur, there is a way to deal with it. We've had a prospective member get drunk and slap a person's hand away from the hot tub controls because the drunk wanted it cold in the hot tub. Another time, a prospective male member actually started putting his hands on a woman's body.

One was implemented because a child visitor destroyed an antique doll collection of our host.

I like Vera, for two reasons, one she is open minded...and two she knows what it takes to run a nudist resort and make others feel accepted, and comfortable. That only comes from having experienced hardships, and difficulty at nudist resorts in the past. If only some of the other nudist resort owners felt this way....Picture the fun you have now...only ten times better! Thank you Vera, Have you ever considered running a nudist resort?
