Animated Gif's on my PC stopped being animated! That means all of your cute avitars are motionless!!  When I try to save them to disk the PC thinks they are bitmaps not gifs! I have XP home-is there a setting I may have screwed up? It used to work. I have the same problem in both IE and Netscape. |

Ya, Yahoo isn't big on getting back to you with useful answers. If you have Windows XP, is it possible that you have their firewall turned on? Or do you have any kind of router for home network or for sharing your internet connection? I have a Linksys router that's used just to share the internet connection between all by computers and it has a firewall.

Hi guys - ive been well busy with my school exams recently so i havnt been on much lately - so i hope u dont mind if i jump on this post with my own pc problem. does anyone know about firewalls? the problem im having is i cant use yahoo messenger with my webcam as it says im behind a firewall when im not, theres no firewall on my pc. My cam works fine on msn but not yahoo - ive tried contacting yahoo but i think i would get more response out of a brick wall - lol. Any ideas? ive done all thay yahoo have suggested on their help pages, but nothing works. thanxs. brax. |

The animated avitars work again!  I don't know what was wrong, but after I installed the newest version of Incredimail (which uses animated smilies) animated gifs work again. It is so nice to fix a PC problem without having to spend a lot of time head wall banging.

I suppose that I should have provided more information, The PC with the problem is an XP machine, it is homenetworked to a cable modem. all other PCs connected to the network have no problem with animated gifs. Animated Gifs will not work in either IE or Netscape so cleaning out the Cache for IE won't affect Netscape. I just copied an animated gif from this site using my Win2000 laptop and sent it over to my XP machine. Now I have to wait until my wife is done with her "schoolwork" (she is a teachers aid) and then I will see if it will work. (that will determine whether it is a problem with the browsers and/or internet settings)

The reason it is changing to a .bmp, is because of two things. Yes, the answers you got before are helpful, but they do not address the reason it is identifying them as bmp's and not gifs. Bmp is a static image, and will not view as animated as you have found out.
Two things...
#1: The connection speed as to which you download your files and access the internet, will cause a loss in file structure, which means simply that the image has lost part of its value, so it will not be the same as they have put up for you to see. There is a solution to this to get around it, which I will address after I tell you the #2 reason for it trying to save it as a .bmp and not a gif.
#2 reason:
If you have Web Graphics Compressed, then this will also cause this problem, basically in laymens terms, converting the image to a easier to download and smaller file size, which seems a bit confusing when bmp files are generally larger than most all others, but this will cause the image to download as an .art or bmp ONLY file, not allowing you to save the gif as a gif.
Ok...the reasons explained, the Resolution is relatively easy:
First, you need to make sure you are on an optimized connection, and Most dialups will not rpovide perfect recognition to all file formats as there is a lot of loss in the file integrity when using dialup, so make sure you have the dialup connection that does not kick you off all the time, in other words, try different dial up #'s til you get one that is fast (for dialup anyway) and does not kick you off.
Next, if you have Cable or T1 connections, you should be in pretty good shape. Now if you have DSL, you are saying, I Have DSL, and it is Fast, well I disagree most of all, as DSL has a Lot of Problems with its Integrity of Contsant Connection, which will also cause terrible problems leading to such things as your problem.
In any case, if you have DSL or Cable and this is occuring, reboot(not your computer), YOUR Cable Modem or DSL Modem, by unplugging it from the wall outlet or the back of the modem and leave it unplugged from electrical power for at least 2-3 mins, allowing the IC chips to dissipate and reset. Then plug the modem back in and try your connection again.
Next, if you have your connection optimized and all connections< cables and wiring is tight to your computer connections, Pat yourself on the back as you have become a level 1 technician.
Next:
Open Internet Explorer and click on the Tools Button at the top next to Help, scroll down the secondary popup list to "Internet Options" and click on it...
The "General" Tab should default and come up with sections on the center of the page as
1st, Home page
2nd, Temporary Internet Files
and 3rd, as History
Go down to the 2nd section: Temporary Internet files..
click on Delete Files
a smaller popup window will come up...put a checkmark in the little white box to the left that reads: "Delete all offline content"
Click Ok
Next, go down to the History section and change the value of Days to keep pages in History to 0(zero) from the value that is in there which I am sure is right now 20.
Then click OK
Next:
Go to the top and click on the "Advanced" Tab
Scrool down to the Security section and put a check mark in the box next to: Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when Browser is closed
Click OK at the Bottom of the Internet Options page and it will go away
What this has done is simple and I should explain so you know..
You have cleaned out all the Garbage stored on your computer every second you browse the internet, well some of it anyway. This is the maintenance users way to do this, and something you can easily do periodically to help maintain a cleaner computer all by yourself.
Next:
Reboot(Restart) your computer for all the setting to take effect properly

Hi Rich, Welcome to the Forum.
It sounds like another program has been associated with .gif files, ive seen this happen before.
Try this, locate a .gif file on your computer, anyone will do, right click it and choose, OPEN WITH, you may see a list of programs there. Click on CHOOSE PROGRAM, this should bring up a list of Programs for you to choose. By default XP uses Windows Picture and Fax Viewer for gif files.
You should see that in the list, choose it. Then Make Sure you put a check mark were it says: Use the Selected Program to Open this kind of File. Doing that will re associate ALL of the gif files to open with that program.

First off, welcome to the group!
I'm no guru-I have some problems with computers too, but I think I can help with at least part of your problem.
In XP, when you find a gif you want to save,
1. Right click it.
2. from the pull down that opens, click "SAVE PICTURE AS."
3. A window will pop up showing MY PICTURES. At the top, you can browse to place it in another folder if you like.
At the bottom there is an area that says "FILE NAME" & below that, "SAVE AS TYPE." If it doesn't say "GIF (*.gif)", click the arrow at the right side of the box, and the options available to save open up in a pull down menu. Select "GIF (*.gif)", if available. (You may already know all that. If so, sorry to be of no help.) If it isn't available, there is something wrong or missing in your software. That may be the case, if none of the gif avatars you find are moving. And in that case, you need advice from a wiser one.
