Just a little "off-topic" observation....

I live in the Tampa area and I'm involved with the Tampa Area Naturists (TAN) who are trying to establish a nude beach in the area, so far without success. The St. Petersburg/Clearwater Area Convention & Visitors Bureau has experienced a 2.5 million dollar shortfall in the current 2002 year's budget and the TDC/CVB Board is recommending to the Board of County Commissioners to defer or basically borrow the money to cover the shortfall from the beach re-nourishment fund.

9/11 has hurt tourism significantly in the area....we (TAN) hope to help offer a "solution" to their shortfall. Haulover in Miami is a prime example of what a nude beach can do for tourism and the economy of a community.

Hopefully the business community will view our 'solution' a little more favorably than the county Government offices have.

Now this i have to take issue with. Why is it that as soon as an area notices that money is becomming a problem they automatically think of the "quick fixes" such as nudity and gambling to come into an area. I can see no benefit to having a nude beach on the areas local economy! There would have to be increased police patrols and fencing. Please name one area of the country where this has impacted the area in a positive way.....

Tell me more about TAN. I live in Florida and would love to get involved in a club.. I have quite a few friends in the Tampa area. In fact we went to Ebor City last weekend and had a great time! Is the TAN club militant or are you into having fun!

In this press release announcing National Nude Weekend, local officials describe the positive effect Haulover Nude Beach has had on the local economy, and its relation to international travel and tourism.

SUBJECT: Haulover Beach Naturists Get to Celebrate 12 Years of Clothes Free Beach Recreation

Miami, Florida:
Naturists, nationwide, are looking forward to July 12, 2003 for the celebration of National Nude Weekend. For Haulover Beach Naturists, they are looking forward to that date to celebrate their 12th anniversary of the establishment of the "designated Naturist family beach" at Haulover Beach Park.

National Nude Weekend was established by Lee Baxandall of The Naturist Society in 1983, to commemorate the American custom of skinny-dipping. Nicky Hoffman, Director of The Naturist Society states; "several dozen Naturist groups and most nudist clubs, nationwide, will be celebrating this weekend, again this year, with special events for the family."

Haulover Beach's designated Naturist family beach is 1/3 of a mile long in the 2-mile long beach park and sees over 1.2 million visitors a year, making it one of the largest facilities in attendance in South Florida. South Florida Free Beaches, working with Miami-Dade County Park and Recreation Department, founded the facility in 1991.

Shirley Mason, Director of the BEACHES Foundation, a Naturist educational group, states; "The establishment of the Naturist family beach has been a boon to hotels and restaurants in the area. Through all the downturns in tourism that South Florida has experienced these past 12 years, Haulover's Naturist beach continued to grow in attendance. Even after 9/11, the parking revenues reflect growth in visitations."

Clyde Lott, a SFFB Beach Ambassador, is on the beach every sunny day. Before leaving for his annual 3 month trek to visit as many nude beaches, hot springs and clubs in North America as he can, stated; "it always amazes me that every day I meet visitors from all over the world, who come to Miami just to visit Haulover's Naturist Family Beach."

John & Cheryl, first time visitors from Southern New Jersey stated: "We formerly flew to the Caribbean so that we could enjoy a nude beach in a tropical climate. Then we heard of Haulover Beach. We flew out of Philadelphia on Thursday and we were on the beach in four hours. When we flew to the Caribbean, we lost two days of our vacation just traveling. Visiting Miami Beach gave us back our seven day vacation.
We'll be back in 6 months."

Richard Mason, SFFB volunteer says: "After talking to thousands of people over several years, on the phone, all inquiring as to where the nude beaches are in Florida, I learned something very important. Most of those callers were tourists, looking for Naturist facilities as a component of their vacation choice. If Florida had more Naturist facilities, they would have more tourists.

"You don't have to sell any one on the idea of visiting a clothing-optional beach. Provide the facility and they will come. They are safe, they are clean and there is something very American about a family, parents and children, skinny dipping together." Stated Norma Mitchell lifelong Naturist. "Our Founding Fathers and several presidents skinny-dipped and so did most Americans before indoor bathtubs and swimsuits. Haulover Beach visitors have helped fill hotel rooms, fill restaurant seats, pay resort taxes and create jobs in this tourist orientated community." Mitchell continued.

The Haulover regulars are all looking forward to this years National Nude Weekend where they will meet with hundreds of Naturists who make the trek from distant destinations. (Gawkers are discouraged)
