i use to get leg cramps alot while sleeping, when i woke up they would cramp bad enough to make a person cry, since retiring a few years ago they seemed to have stopped, i was in law enforcement and wonder if stress had anything to do with it or if it was sitting and driving all day.

Not knowing your age and risk factors, hard to comment. Strongly recommend seeing a physician. While the symptoms may be benign, rest pain with legs flat that is relieved by 'hanging legs down' (sitting) can be a symptom of blood flow problems. This is particularly problematic among smokers and/or diabetics.

"A mineral deficiency of calcium and/or magnesium is probably the most frequent cause of night leg cramping... Cramps are often caused by a lack of potassium, resulting in an electrolytic imbalance." [source]
"Low levels of certain minerals known as electrolytes—magnesium, potassium, calcium and sodium—have long been linked to leg cramps." [source]
Further information for your research is here
I've found this to work for nocturnal leg cramps. Make sure you have no deficiencies in the other common vitamins and nutrients. Drink enough water to be hydrated. I'm not disagreeing with pilot, but it may be this simple. I would guess your sitting provides more blood flow, and therefore more nutrients to your legs.

Pilot has kindly given me permission to reprint our private conversation.
Kevin...
You might be right, but most patients I have dealt with who have benign leg cramps do NOT report positional relief as described by the poster.
I used to have nocturnal leg cramps, worst damn charlie-horse things imaginable, developed as I pointed my toes when I was asleep. Rolled out of bed writhing in pain, finally would massage them and get back to sleep.
Conversely, the "pain relieved by hanging down" is often a presentation of severe rest pain.
I agree, chances are it's nothing. But delay in diagnosis and treatment if it is a vascular problem leads rapidly to amputation, no kidding.
Pilot is in the medical profession, so his advice should be taken seriously. You should probably do both-- improve your vitamin and mineral intake, and see a doctor about it soon.

I have had them over the years and it seems that eating bananas, which are a good source of potassium, helps.......

Sorry to hear that you have them darn charlie horses too, I have been having them most of my life, just as you described, mostly at night and after a hard sweaty day at work, after doing some investigating, I have decided that caffeine and not drinking enough water or electrolytes is what caused my problem with them, even after giving up caffeine and drinking more fluids I still have them but not nearly as often, also I wanted to let you know that I found out that there are a lot of my close family members that have the same issue, I think this could be a hereditary but I am not sure.

Thank you for bringing up this topic.
I have foot cramps at times, and I am also a heart attack survivor. My cardiologist checked my pulse near my ankles and said I have good circulation.
So, after reading this topic, I will concentrate on getting some foods with sufficient magnesium. When I do get cramps in my toes, I bend then back and that seems to help a lot.
(don't you love it when us older folks explain our medical adventures in detail??)

I get leg cramps at nite, related to muscle damage from yeaqrs ago. There is a good amount of prevention amd relief in keeping my legs extra WARM, which helps the muscles relax.

I had the same problem starting 30 years ago. I went through 11 mounts of excersice and Quine and other things the Dr. and the nurse Practitioner told me to do. After all that the Nurse told me that he had talked to the Phico and He told me that there was one thing they could try but no guarantee's the drug was used in large doses for people with epilepsy seasures However in small doses one of the side effects was relaxation of the extreames. I tried it and have been on for the last 29 years. It works great and If I have to get up and go on a service call I don't have a problem like I had with the Librax and the other drugs they tried on me. It might work for you???? Ask your Dr. to try I guess. 1/2 mg per night is what I started out at. Worth a try. It was Klonpin. Please write and let me know if it works for you? Later
If we were supposed to ware clothes then how come we were not born with them on????

I'd try calcium, potassium, and hydration before drugs.

Yes try everything you can before drugs. As I said I tried almost everthing I could for 11 mounts before they suggested the drugs.(That included Sexual climix with my wife every night before I went to bed, That also didn't work and I belived lead to my divorce from my 1st wife of 23 years cause I deminded that of her, even though it was her job according to the Bible then another 2 months trying Librax and some other mussle relaxers. But this stuff worked( the Klonpin that is and there are a number of generics(not spelled right) But you could try when you get there. at least for a short time and if it doesn't work you can go and try something else. Please let me know how this works one way or the other.
