Being "naked" is not equal to being a "nudist".

The second term suggests one knows how to behave around others.

I am confused at all the rules applied to "nudist". Are you saying nudist are non-sexual? It seems to me that in textile social situations singles seek out attractive members of the opposite sex to flirt with and socialise. There are swingers in regular clubs that are not nudist but seek out other like minded couples and gays also seek mates in clothed social settings. Why do nudist loose these freedoms because they are naked? Discretion is not abstinence but the ability to act appropriately in certain settings with certain people. I see no reason why a discrete swinger, straight or gay person can't seek out like minded individuals simply because they are naked.

Another point is that we are dealing with human behavior here, and there will always be gray areas. Someone may be primarily a nudist, but may also have a bit of exhibitionist in her. I do agree that when one is in the company of any group, one should play by their rules (follow their ethic), although there will always be those who interpret the ethic slightly differently.

richtex, you said the key word here - discretion.

A real nudist is not necessarily non-sexual in their private life, but they recognize the need to tone it down while in social situations.

Whenever we lose a favorite nude beach, it is usually because some people felt they should "just be themselves without the rules" and have sex openly. This gives the authorities everything they need to act. The resulting closed beach is a huge loss for everybody.

When a nudist resort is treated as a sexual meat market, the friendly and safe atmosphere is ruined, women in particular feel less comfortable, and the resort loses its legitimate reputation as a truly nudist destination.

When this behavior is not checked, you soon find many of the nice people getting to know you want nothing to do with you when you express that you're not interested in their offer of immediate sex. Yes, this does happen at some resorts, and the effect is chilling on real socialization.

Much of the time a single male approaching a couple soon reveals he's looking for much more than conversation. This puts couples on the defense whenever approached, and creates the need for quotas and restrictions for single males.

If a couple is especially attractive and doesn't enjoy such crude advances, it becomes difficult for them to enjoy their vacation.

Once an atmosphere of primarily sexual innuendo is established, some take that as a signal that open sex would be permissible. It only takes one such event in an evening to destroy any pretense of the destination being truly nudist.

Rules of behavior are necessary to keep some people from taking full advantage in this way and ruining it for everyone else.

In a textile environment, you're not providing a pool in which to get naked, so the explicit sexual activity is naturally confined to a private room, where it belongs.

And yes, nudesunguy, human nature has a lot to do with it. Understanding what people tend to do with a nude opportunity is key to running a successful resort. Discretion and respect become the central issues.

Very good points and I believe apply in all correctly functioning social situations clothed or naked. I guess when nude extra attention must be paid to social norms. In other words at a nudist resort if you feel the need to yell "get a room" it is already too late.
