I have been watching this event for two years now and see that it continues to grow. In the US there will be both a Miami ride (in March I think) and in Seattle later in the year.

Has anyone done this event? What was it like?
Would you do it if you could?

If you do a "Search" on these forums for "bike ride" you will probably come up with your answer.

Happy holiday season,

Our whole family would love to participate in the World Bike Ride. I think I will seriously look into us all going to the one in Seattle, depending on when exactly it is in the year. My husband and I did the Bay To Breakers, in San Fransisco nude several times when we used to live in northern CA.

I rode naked in the 2005 Chicago WNBR and had a very memorable experience. I participated in the planning and provided a promotional video to the organizers for publicity on the Chicago public access stations.

The ride occurs after dark in Chicago, but the pre-ride activities that start at 6pm are as much fun. In 2005 the weather was great and over 300 bikers rode with probably 80 to 90 percent choosing to bare it all. I've seen photos and videos from other rides and unlike those rides, the Chicago rides have been much more gender balanaced. The male:female ratio is closer to 3:2. Gotta love those windy city ladies who go Godiva!

Unfortunately the 14th Precint Chicago police are killjoys and their presence at the staging park was more to intimidate as evidenced by their threats to arrest anyone publicly nude. Even so, at 9pm a signal was given that now was the time to show your personal freedom and protest world oil dependency because the ride was starting. I've rarely felt so much solidarity among humanity as when nearly 300 bikers peeled off their clothes in front of the police and rode away into the Chicago city streets bare and 'mostly' innocent.

At first, the police gave us escorts through the intersections as we headed towards the downtown area from the extreme Northwest part of the city, but about 45 minutes into the ride the police set up two ambush points and captured 6 male riders. At least one lady was captured but released on the spot without a citation. In another case, a nude female rider pleaded to the police to release her fiance, but they compromised and allowed her to keep his bike as they put him in the car and headed to booking. I know these stories firsthand because I was one of the arrested and charged men. We were held for on average 6 hours, processed, given court dates and released without bail. At our court dates, some of us got fines while others got 3 months court supervision.

Overall the ride was a success since it continued down Michigan Ave. and stopped traffic. Friends who completed the ride told me about the hundreds of Chicagoans who walked out of restaurants and shops and stood along the street to watch and catpure images on cell phones. People cheered the riders for the exuberant display of personal freedom. Unfortuantely I doubt many onlookers got the world oil dependency protest message, but they did get the body acceptance and freedom from clothes message.

Even after my experience with the Chicago law and order system. I helped organize the 2006 ride by volunteering another promotional video and serving as a first contact screener for riders at the faux meeting place. I even got to chat with the arresting officer from the previous year and had a good laugh with him. I couldn't ride in 2006 because of bruised ribs from a biking accident two days before the event, but I still did my part to help get the ride underway safely and with minimum police interference.

This year the police were more reserved. As a couple hundred people were nude standing in a residential street waiting to ride en mass, a patrol car pulled up to the nearest intersection and watched. No one was rowdy. Everyone was helping to hold each others bikes as they undressed and the patrol car simply sat there for 5 minutes before slowly pulling away. The ride covered 15 miles into the heart of Chicago and no arrests occurred. The route was planned to stay out of residential neighborhoods after leaving the staging area and so apparently nude riders on business heavy streets are acceptable in Chicago

If you've never attended a WNBR, find a nearby ride location and make plans to attend. If you've ridden in the WNBR, then plan to bring more friends next time. I'm looking forward to the 2007 Chicago WNBR.

Joseph

Hi Suncatcher,

Thanks for all of the details.

After they had arrested you, did you stay undressed or did the police allow you to dress? If not, what about at the lockup?

I am also curious about the legal charges...what were they? Often we hear locally that if you are seen nude that you can be charged and then will be a registered sex offender. Was this a risk for you? Just the threat of this keeps many people I know from even considering being nude.

My hats off to you for your courage to do the ride, and your desire to do so again, even after the issues the first time. I am glad you are standing up for personal rights!

The ratio sounds as good as possible for a bike ride, clothed or nude. I do many group rides and a ratio of 4 to 1 is considered to have a lot of females there!

I have run the Chicago marathon twice. It is a wonderful city. A ride there would be awesome.

At the time of my arrest, my shorts and T-shirt were attached to the underside of my bike seat. The officer ordered me to get off the bike and put my hands behind my back. I layed my bike down in the middle of the street and complied completely. I was escorted with verbal abuse from the officer to the backseat of his patrol car. My bike was placed into the trunk of a different patrol car. Another naked biker was placed in the same backseat with me and driven to the police station. We were led naked through the front entrance and main lobby. When we arrived, four other riders were already handcuffed to a bench and had been allowed to put on their clothes. Our bikes were parked in the adjacent hallway. The naked rider who was placed in the car with me had a backpack with his clothes so he requested and was allowed to put on his clothes. Somewhere in the six block route to the police station, my clothes were dropped (removed?) from my saddle bag and so didn't arrive at the police station. I had no clothes to put on and so I was handcuffed to the bench wearing my shoes, socks, and helmet for about two hours during the initial questioning and police determining how to charge us. Later, a Watch Commander arrived and wondered why I was naked. He seemed miffed that the arresting officers hadn't seen fit to get me some clothes. One of the other riders offered me his spare pair of pants and so I was told to put them on while still handcuffed to the bench.

We were charged under a Chicago city ordinance of 'public nudity'. Yep, public nudity without lewdness or intent to offend is criminal in Chicago. Each offense is punishable up to a $500 fine and no jail time. This charge does not make you a sex offender in Illinois and your name doesn't go on some sex offender list. This will give you a police record that you must identify on any job application and security clearance you might need to work.

In all the WNBR rides in 3 years, I've read of less than a dozen arrests worldwide. I don't consider my choice to participate in 2006 courageous. Before I chose to ride the first time, I studied the law and understood the possible consequences and prepared if the worst happened. I've never had a police record until the 2005 WNBR. Now that I know the process, the prospects of another arrest are less worrisome and the message of body acceptance and the freedom to express my humanness is even more important.

I hope the recent national elections are an indication of a growing dissatisfaction with irrational governance driven by intolerance of alternative perspectives. After the 1994 takeover of Congress by the conservative party, many state legislatures and municipal governments seemed emboldened to govern from religious precepts. My home state of Indiana changed its stance on nudity at that time and created a new offense called 'public nudity'. Until that time 'indecent exposure' was an offense requiring the commission of a lewd act or overt intent to offend with public hudity. Under the new law, a person is a criminal for just being publicly nude and it doesn't require a complaint from another citizen. The new law was immediately challenged all the way to the US Supreme Court. Unfortunately 5 Justices wrote 3 separate opinions upholding the law. It seems the court "majority" couldn't agree about the grounds for upholding the law. The Moralists had their day in court and won, so many other states followed Indiana's lead and passed similar anti-nudity legislation. These laws are so broad that it is a misdemeanor if a mother's breast is exposed in public while her baby is nursing. Some states recognized this absurdity and rewrote breastfeeding as an exception into law. Hopefully with the conservative party's grip on Congress released, the laws and direction of legislation will begin to reflect the attitude of the majority of Americans and favor less the rantings of the vocal Moralists. Permit me to step down from my soapbox.

My recommend

I did the Washington, DC ride last year(2008). No one was completely nude. DC wants genitals covered but, you need to wear very little. Two guys wore a sock, some of us wore a www.bananapeelz.com/ or simular item. Roger (the organizer) had gotten permits from DC and the Park service(for the White House). We had police escorts (1 car and a motorcycle) for 42 riders. While, many of the DC tourists who saw us seemed surprised. They mostly took pictures. I didn't hear any complaints.

I'm hoping to do the ride in Montpellier, VT next month. There, you can go completely nude. I read that in Vermont it is illegal to disrobe in public, but not to be naked in public (pretty weird if you ask me), so they have places for people to disrobe inside.

rooftop- I think that has to do with stippers. When you show up at the ride only wearing shorts, it makes the disrobing mighty quick.

Nude bike riders are a tradition in the Freemont Summer Soltice parade. I would like to go do it but don't know if I have the nerve anymore. I did Bare to Breakers about 9 years ago and felt a little over exposed. Don't get me wrong I love nude hiking and biking however doing so in front of a crowd of tens of thousands seems a bit daunting.

While the ride (DC) is quite slow, We aren't in any one place for very long. We had about 45 bikes total. For much of the ride I was near the back of the group. I think this is why I saw so many cameras and cell phones. I didn't hear any negative comments. We were past by people in tour busses, trams, Segways, even other bikes. Roger was leading and being 6'7"(plus the hemet) and wearing what I would descibe as a penis glove (which makes him look erect) people did notice him. Also, the seat on his bike is at least 4' from the ground. (isisdc has the only nonresticted photos of him I can find on flickr.)
