I have thought about the wonderful effects that nudism would have on the economy and the environment if it were practiced universally.
Imagine the energy savings that would result from having to use less electricity for air-conditioning. The same room that is comfortable at 72 with clothing on is comfortable at 78 when nude... and even warmer temps feel nice if there's a gentle breeze from a ceiling fan.
Clothing, if worn only when necessary, would need washing less often, saving energy and conserving water, and less phosphates and other detergent chemicals would be washed into our sewer systems. Clothing would also take less wear and tear (eating spaghetti naked is a VERY good idea!), lasting longer.
If people were comfortable with social nudity, then airline flights would be more secure, and there would be fewer delays if you didn't have to be searched with a wand sensor.
Bags for traveling would be lighter, allowing for more baggage room for gifts and other things bought on the trip, which would help commercialism. Flights would also tend to be lighter due to less cargo, and require less fuel for the trip.
Body-acceptance would hurt the cosmetic surgery industry, but I think people would be more motivated to exercise more and live healthier lifestyles.
If people went naked for more mundane tasks, and bought every-day clothes less often, their budgets would grow for other things.
Can anyone else think of other economic or environmental effects?

Greg, looks like you're getting one of your wishes. Look here for information about the clothing optional airline flight in May. They should take your suggestion and do the screening nude to speed things up!

maybe this could be promoted as everyone doing their part to reduce global warming, if all those air conditioners were cut by 6 degrees it would be a big difference

Such a wonderful idea! And there might even be enough new jobs in engineering daily items for nude use (seat belts, anyone?) to employ the garment manufacturers and Gap sales clerks who would no longer need to work those jobs. .....Add to the savings the decreased need for police departments, if no one could hide a weapon beneath their shirt. And with fewer shoes worn, littering might decrease out of self-interest.
The real benefit, I suspect, in wider acceptance of nudist patterns would be the wider acceptance of people for themselves. With this attitude, more polite behavior and better social skills should lead to better citizens. Then we ALL benefit.

I like that, Greg.
I seriously can't recommend enough the book "Body Freedom Day", by Stuart R. Ward. It's a work of fiction about a future where the option to wear clothing (or not) has become a reality.
All that you mentioned and more are in that book.
As a personal testimony? I not only save money on laundry, but I am recently convinced that I'm also exposed to fewer chemicals from the detergents left in the clothes. That alone should add a year or two to my life. And yes . . . I want to exercise more, now.
