We have also noticed that for the most part there are always a few single women and nobody seems to bother them. Most people are respectful and seem to keep to themselves except for the regulars who greet eachother and strike up casual conversation. The only thing we find annoying is the beachgoers who remain clothed or wear bathing suits. We feel these are probably the gawkers. There are plenty of other beaches, no need to go to a nude beach and remain clothed. We would love to see nude police like they have on some beaches in europe. They greet people who are clothed and remind them that it is in fact a nude beach.

Very quick over-view:

You have Ancient Vincent Price, who is there every day and maintains several outposts (complete with a towel at every one) just so he has a place to go at every corner of the beach to conveniently harass girls young enough to be his grand-daughters.

Then there is Beaver, named for his prominent overbite. He wears dark shades, is probably 65 or so, has a big gut and even bigger eyes. He stumbles past every woman he can identify as such.

Phys-Ed Guy wears 70's-era gym shorts, white crew socks and sneakers, and is a fixture there. (I actually think he's there to look at the straight men.)

Brown wears a UPS-style baseball cap and big wrap-around shades, is maybe 55-60, has a big gut, and rotates his head to look at your date V-E-R-Y slowly, as though you won't notice.

DJ and Scooby are the two morons who reliably throw Frisbees around near bathers, and often hit them with errant tosses. These clowns are both fat guys North of 60, but never pass-up an opportunity to "welcome" a young, unaccompanied single girl there.

I could go on and on, but it's possible that I've made my point..? There are plenty of rude imbeciles there daily, but no one will bother you unless you are an attractive woman without an advocate, or are a man who has an attractive woman with you.

Simple math, guys.

We love the nicknames and descriptions Fishman. It might be amusing to watch some of these imbeciles in action. "Towels at every outpost" lol!

Thanks for the descriptions Fishman. I may get to go again in a couple of weeks, so I'll keep an eye out for the ones you have described.

Good job Fishman!

This year I didn't get to the beach until mid July. But now I've been there 5 days. Can anybody tell me some good news - anything that changed this summer for the better? Because the changes I've noticed so far aren't very positive. More people nude and topless in the clothed area. More trash not taken home. When I leave at the end of the day there is trash inside the mens room just thrown on the floor. Another arrest in the parking lot on Saturday. One factor involved with the nudity in the clothed area is that the sign was blocked by large tents so that almost nobody would even be able see it.

I'm also wondering why some signs are missing. Last summer there was a sign at the entrance of the parking lot that said "Clothing Optional Beach Parking". It was a post-Sandy sign that was erected last year. There was also the little sign fastened to the stop sign when you walk out of the parking lot. Both signs are gone. There is no mention of a clothing optional beach until you get all the way down to the famous sign on the beach.

The best improvement that could be made would be to extend the Mobi Mat so that
the walk wouldn't be such a chore.

Outside of the missing signs, the things that Schroder mentioned could ultimately get the beach shutdown...especially being nude where clothing is required.

The trash in the bathrooms has been an ongoing situation. (I won't touch that stuff, but we always bring extra bags to clean up garbage that we see on the beach.)

Schroder, reading between your lines a bit, I would have to agree that a large % of people there on any given day just don't care if the place is going to stay CO or not. I have been to the beaches adjacent to Lots A and B before, and haven't seen that sort of abuse of the facilities in either place.

It seems that some folks feel that because they are allowed to get naked at Gunnison, anything goes. That's very faulty reasoning. While I have no problem with people having discreet sex behind windscreens toward the back of the beach (done it myself) I heartily object to leaving trash everywhere, getting too drunk/stupid/profane/loud, and generally making a nuisance of oneself via approaching other beach-goers who would reasonably have no interest whatsoever in being accosted by a disgusting old man who somehow still views himself as a catch.

I'll never see this remedied in my lifetime, but I do what I can. That has definitely made a huge difference in how certain people deal with us. I just wish a few more folks would stand up, because that sort of thing might just keep the beach open for those of us who respect the place.

Fishman you hit the nail on the head when you wrote "It seems that some folks feel that because they are allowed to get naked at Gunnison, anything goes. That's very faulty reasoning."

My advice for anyone reading this is do like Fishman and take extra trash bags along and pick up what you can. Be the best citizen you can be at the beach. If you have some time - sit at the start of the clothed portion and stop naked people from wandering into it. Ten years ago the local and regular people usually had someone positioned there to stop that from happening. Apparently not any more. If you see illegal activity taking place - report it. The number is 732-872-5900, same number for emergencies.

I think the good news is that Gunnison is still an extremely popular beach and continue to believe that most of the people there are essentially decent people. We don't want to be letting a few ruin it for everyone. Help weed them out by turning them in when you see an offense.

Great day at Gunnison today...lots of sun, the water was great, good sized crowd. Not to long after we got there, probably around 11 am, a guy and girl were escorted by rangers to a ranger vehicle and she was in tears. I don't know what happened. They were not driven off the beach but walked south with one of the rangers. Other than that, all was quiet.

Another great day at Gunnison. We both agreed the thing that Gunnison needs most is a set of porta potties on the beach. The walk back to the bathrooms is way too long. There must be a lot of people peeing in the ocean for this reason.

My Wife is 23, 130lbs with size F breasts purchased to enhance her "outer beauty". The only people she considers Gawkers are other women in the malls staring into her chest rather than her face.

On weekends we tend to arrive early to get a spot near the shore, maybe these gawkers wander around in the back?

(I went back a ways to find this post, and I'll tell you why I took the time...)

I've only been there on a very few weekends over the past 8 years, and having been there just this past Sunday on a beautiful day, I see Palmer's point.

Yes, the usual suspects are present and are dutifully gawking away, but when there are thousands of people there, the losers are diluted in the mix to the point where they are barely noticeable... And- very significantly -there is literally no room for them to cruise between blankets, or to set-up shop 10 feet away from some young girl's genitals in order to sit and stare.

Guess I owe some of you an apology for ranting so much about the place; when the Normal/Gawker ratio is 1000:1 on a weekend, that's no comparison to the extreme annoyance of as little as a 1:1 ratio we have encountered many many times on marginal-weather weekdays. It's a completely different environment in the latter situation half the time. (But not always, luckily.)

I talked to some Park employees who were removing the Mobi-Mat from Gunnison just before Irene hit there a couple of years back, and I asked them about it.

They said that the NPS was afraid that it would be washed away, and told me that it cost over $100 per running-foot to replace. Then, they commented that about 6 old guys had suffered heart attacks in recent seasons while struggling to and fro from the water.

So here I go again: shouldn't we band together to get that thing extended? I'd be more than willing to do my part. If as few as 400 of us donated a mere foot of mat, we'd all land beyond the volleyball area, if not further.

If that's $1,000 for 10 feet of mat, that seems excessive. Maybe there is a less costly mat. It's not a bad idea to take up a collection.

Been to Gunnison several times in the 90's, and been to Halouver Beach several times in the 2000's and witnessed a significant number of clothed gawkers each time. Too bad because we like to be in populated nudist environments. Wanted the beach to be a good experience. Too many clothed men walking around obviously staring at women.
We decided not to go to those clothing optional beaches again, and now only go to resorts and private venues because there are no gawkers. Glad the beach is still there for all who still want to go there. Some nudist beaches in Europe do not allow clothed people on the beach. Too bad that is not the case in the USA.
