I really enjoy visiting new places. I like to be able to speak of a nudist venue from a first hand knowledge perspective. My wife, on the other hand, likes what she likes and is particular about the places we visit. I like to call her a nudist snob because she likes, comfort, services, amenities, cleanliness and the least amount of dirt and dust possible!

Some of the clubs or resorts we've visited are considered rustic by some nudist's standards and my wife doesn't care for "rustic." She loves the beach but many nude beaches are difficult to get to. Even our own nude beach is difficult for her to get to and the trek down and back up doesn't make it pleasant for her to visit.

I like visiting new places, she's content with going back to the same places that she knows are what she likes and what she prefers.

Yes, FireProf, the California coastal beaches are not easy to get to, because of the steep cliffs that are adjacent to the ocean. The nudist beaches I have been to in northern California, on the ocean, require some huffing and puffing, climbing steep paths, when you return to your car after a day at the beach.
Still, though, the steep uphill climb is much shorted in time than is your stay at the beach, so the effort is well worth it.
One of the easy beaches to get to is Baker Beach in SF, with a nice view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Gawkers persist there, sadly.
Back to the topic at hand. I've been to 9 different nudist venues from where I live, and they require not that much driving to get to. I visited 3 of them on a 3 day weekend. What a tour!

“I rise early almost every morning and sit in my chamber, without any clothes whatever, half an hour or an hour, according to the season, either reading or writing.”

the first venue i ever visited was $10. back in the 80's someone told me recently it's now $90. for a day pass - are they Crazy ! i guess maybe 5-6 venues i was a member of one over 10 years but the first time i visited a nude beach in florida the gated club lost my interest . i love to hike and have found places off the beaten path to shed my clothes. when i get hot in summer and want a pool the gay camps are about $10. - $15. a better bet than $90. any day.

Just booked my first trip to a venue for next week. Girlfriend and I are heading up to Bare Oaks in Ontario, Canada for 2 days. I’ve been to a handful of nude beaches, and I’m nude anywhere possible, I’ve even done a nude bowling night once, but I’ve never been to an actual venue. Looking forward to it.

That's awesome!

I read from several sources that Bare Oaks is nude mandatory; which is a turn-off for some people. I've chatted with my wife about nude mandatory; and she doesn't really like the concept. It's not a question of nudity; as she gets naked at the resort. It's a question of "boundaries", as she does not like the idea of someone else deciding where/when she has to be naked.

I'm really curious what your experience there will be. Please do share when you get back!

Up until 6 years ago, we would have preferred "nude mandatory." We both visited nude venues that stated such but later learned they were actually clothing optional. In some cases, we saw other dressed more than naked.

Then my wife got a scare that's stayed with her since then. Two skin cancer surgeries and she began to cover up at nude venues. It worked because there aren't many nude mandatory places, most are clothing optional with over 90% being nude most of the time. It gave my wife the option to slip on her SPF shirt when she felt she had enough sun or reflected sun.

She'll still get naked for most of the day but she knows when she's had enough sun and doesn't want anyone demanding she uncover. You'd think that even a nude mandatory venue would understand that. Bare Oaks is on the bucket list but I am interested in a first hand account of the place and exactly how strict they are about covering after too much sun exposure. Hey, the Prof likes being naked as much as I do but wants to continue not having annual surgeries for skin cancer removal.

I used to very much be "pro-nudity-mandatory." As I've gotten older, chatting about it and getting different perspectives over the years (including FP's); I gradually changed my mind. I get now that being required to be naked from "check-in to check-out" can create an issue: not just for newbies but for a variety of people - for different reasons.

Most of the nudist resorts I've visited "get" that and take a fairly balanced approach. For example designating the pool area as "nude" but being lenient about the areas outside the pool. At TLR, which is designated as "C/O everywhere", people outside the pool area are anywhere from naked to partially covered; and inside the pool area most everyone is naked - even though it is not "mandated." In cases like TLR making nudity mandatory is unnecessary since most people there will opt to be naked in the pool area anyway.

There are cases where the "clothing-optional" designation really becomes "nudity-optional." I've had the good fortune of never encountering that situation (and hopefully never will.) I blame poor management for these occurrences.

When my wife first arrives at a nudist resort, she likes to explore it a bit, getting the "lay of the land", so to speak; and have a snack or lunch outside the pool area. During that time she likes having a "little something on" (as she puts it) and will have a beach wrap on; often unfastened to be topfree. After that it's time to go "hit the pool area"; and she needs no incitement: the beach wrap comes off, stays off and she's happily naked tanning, swimming or conversating. That's her little "ritual", and she enjoys doing it that way. "Nudity-mandatory" would impair her personal practice/enjoyment of nudism - which I would add - STILL involves being naked most of the time!

But that's not to say I'm "anti-nudity-mandatory" either. I would like to eventually visit Bare Oaks because I would enjoy a setting where nudity is "everyone everywhere." But the difference now is that I don't feel it's a "necessity" as I did before.

I will definitely let you all know my experience there. This is what their website says about clothing:

Clothing should be worn only for protection.
In the textile world, clothing is often used to denote status, to entice others, or to alter a person’s appearance. These reasons are intolerable in a naturist environment. In particular, revealing or suggestive clothing should never be worn.
Bathing suits are never appropriate (except on children who are not toilet trained).
Underwear by itself provides no protection and should not be worn alone.
Experienced naturists know that most body heat is lost through the upper half of the body. When cool, naturists put on a shirt – not pants.
Be careful how you wrap towels and sarongs around yourself, as it might suggest you are ashamed of parts of your body.
Absolutely no clothing is permitted while swimming or using the saunas, whirlpool, and showers (except for young children who are not toilet trained).
Women who are menstruating may choose to wear something except while swimming or when using the saunas, whirlpool, and showers. Please make sure that the item of clothing is consistent with naturist values. In other words, it should not be enticing or suggestive. It should not serve as a fashion accessory. Please select an item that is subtle and functional.

The policy seems reasonable enough and would address the Prof's needs to cover when she's cold or had enough reflective sun. Our club's policy is basically the same except we occasionally get some clothed staff member going around being the "you need to be naked" police around the pool deck. Still, I think we'd really like to visit Bare Oaks in the future!

Looking forward to your trip report Willy! Have a good time.

Well, we left there yesterday and we both really enjoyed it. The clothing policy isn’t bad at all. Many people who were a bit chilly, including my girlfriend at times, would put on just a shirt or a hooded sweatshirt and still walk around bottomless. Even men. I saw one couple, he was wearing a shirt, she was completely nude. The staff was very friendly and it was a nice place. My girlfriend, who wasn’t a nudist before we were together, already wants to go back.
We pulled up to the venue and of course I was naked for the drive there, so I walked into the office already naked. We both had to go in because your first time there they make you watch a short video. My girlfriend was clothed at the time. In the video it does say that if it’s your first time, and you’re apprehensive about getting naked right away, it’s okay. But the only part that bothered my gf was they tell you to find a place out of the way, like a quiet corner, if you’re going to stay dressed, so that you don’t offend any nudists. Her thoughts there were that it could be discouraging to anyone who wants to try it.
Anyhow we left the office and found our campsite. We decided to just bring a tent. There are about 3 or 4 places to camp at, being a weekday it wasn’t too busy, so we chose the one site where we could keep our truck right there with us. The others you can’t. We got out to start unpacking and setting up the tent and she was already naked by then. We set up camp then walked back to the office/store because we needed batteries for our air mattress as we didn’t check them before we left. It was nice to be able to just stroll along naked and even do some shopping. You can put everything you buy under your reservation and just pay at the end when you check out. That day we experienced as much as we could. We rode our bicycles around the park, we did some swimming, went in the hot tub, played chess outdoors (they have the big game where you move the 2 foot tall pieces on the ground...she beat me), we played mini golf, we went inside and played pool. All in the nude. It was a great day. The next day we got up and showered. They have shower and bathroom facilities around the park, so it was only a 2 minute walk to the closest shower/bathroom. There are both indoor and outdoor showers. After that we went down to the lake and floated around a bit there, spent some time lying out on the “beach” there. A guy I know who lives in a nudist resort in Michigan was in town with his girlfriend and had arrived that day so we met up with them at the bistro and had a late lunch and some beers. Afterwards we all went out and played some horseshoes, hit the hot tub again then went inside and played darts before calling it a night.
Got up yesterday morning and packed up to head out. Of course I stayed naked the entire time, even driving to the office to check out and then driving out of the place.

Our only disappointments about the place were: the trails. They advertise hiking trails but when we went to hike, they aren’t maintained at all, so even though a sign points you in the general direction, you can’t see a trail anywhere; The bistro was good but has a very limited menu; the mini golf is very poorly maintained. There are tiny pebbles all around it and they stick to your feet and cover the golf area so that you can’t hit a straight ball. And last was the weather, but that’s not their fault. The day was great but at night the temps dropped and we didn’t prepare for that. The first night we both were very cold. The second night we both actually put our clothes on to sleep to try to keep a bit warm.

But overall we both loved it. Not that we’re in any position at the moment, because we just bought a house, but we both talked about how it would be nice to buy a place there. I definitely recommend visiting this place if you can. I posted some pics on my Instagram account, if anyone on here is on there, let me know

Sounds like a success!

The video intro is interesting. Neve been to a resort that takes that approach. I think an actual person doing it is still better though.
I assume that the "go hide if you want to stay dress" directive does not include toplessness or a sarong. Not so bad.

Glad your GF enjoyed it as well! Thanks for the update!

Thanks Willy. Sounds like a place the Prof and I need to visit. We have friends in Manitoba and maybe we can meet there for a long weekend or longer. They usually come way down here to spend a week at a clothing optional resort. Next time, pack more blankets and keep the clothes off in bed! LOL

Well FireProf, if you do ever visit, let me know.

One thing I found kind of funny though was I sort of compared my first visit to a resort to drinking alcohol legally for the first time when you turned 21 (or 18 for some of you older folks). Not that I’m complaining of course. When you weren’t of age to drink, the fact that you were doing something wrong always made drinking even more fun. As soon as you turn of age and can legally drink, that novelty wears off. You still enjoy imbibing on a drink but it has a different feeling to it. The same could actually be said for my first visit. Normally when I’m naked in public, I’m not supposed to be. Not that I’m being an exhibitionist or anything but I’m driving naked, hiking naked, skinny dipping somewhere, etc. Somewhere where society expects me to be clothed. Then I go to this naturist resort where I can be as naked as I want to be, and it had a different feeling to it. It was absolutely great to be able to do so, but that feeling of “getting away with something” was missing. Again, not complaining about it, just reflecting on the similarities.
