Today the fires that have taken so many homes away with great loss of lives in California has destroyed the Swallows Sun Island Club.

Out of 50 residences, only two mobile homes survived the fire. No loss of life has been reported at Swallows.

All structures of the Swallows have burnt to the ground except the kitchen and part of the club house.

The loss of such a fine resort is a loss to all nudists.

Please say a prayer for all those that have lost so much.

Cheri, I've lived out in SoCal. I know first hand the power and fury of the Santa Anas and the fire storms.

My thoughts go out to those who have once again lost everything out in SoCal.

Some random updates on Swallows Sun Island Club
The following are letters circulating to inform nudists of the status of the club and the extent of damage from the fire

Friends,

Many of you I have talked with personally today on the telephone.

Today the fires that has taken so many homes away with great lost of lives in California has struck one of the best nudist resorts in the United States.

Swallows Sun Island Club has burnt to the ground. Out of 50 personal residences only two mobile homes survived the fire. No lost of lives has been reported of residence of Swallows.

All structures of the Swallows has burnt to the ground except the kitchen and part of the club house. Jim & Ruth Shafer has been strong supporters of AANR over the past years. Many of you will recall that the Shafers opened up the gates of there resort to the burn victims of the AANR Convention that was held at De Anza Springs a few years ago. They never accepted one penny from anyone. They has been available to help raise money when asked, for the AANR Legal Defense Fund. For those of you who don't know Jim & Ruth Shafer like my wife and I do they are TRUE FRIENDS to all nudists.

The lost of such a fine resort is a lost to all nudists.

Please say a prayer for Jim & Ruth and all the residences that lost so much.

Jim & Tonya Miller

One other comment, Ruth told us that she was able to escape with a change of clothes however Jim, picked up the old photo albums of the 50 year history of the Swallows and no change of clothingYou have heard nothing but bad news for the last couple of days. Let me fill you in on the rebuilding of "SWALLOWS."

Even before all the fires are put out plans are already falling into place for the rebuilding of "SWALLOWS."

1. Jim & Ruth Shafer has already secure lumber to build the exterior park fence. Just imagine your own club if all of your fence line was burnt to the ground. They will start tomorrow to erect a new fence.

2. It will be several weeks before the electric grid is back in place to provide electric power to the Swallows. However Jim & Ruth Shafer has already made contact with electricians to start replacing the burnt our wiring in the park. Just think 48 out of 50 homes were burnt to the ground including all electric meter loops and the wiring necessary for each residence. The Shafer's want the wiring in place for his residences when the power company can provide service to everyone.

3. At the present time Swallows is without water. Plans are being made to try to correct this problem as soon as possible.

4. Telephone service has been eliminated at the present time. Jim and Ruth chargers for cells phone were burnt in the fire. However they are able to recharge one cell phone at a time by using an automobile. So they are trying to stay in contact with people regarding the rebuilding by the use of one cell phone.

Friends, I have never meet a couple who is so concern for the well being of their members than Jim & Ruth Shafers. The are going out of there way to help their members get back on there feet. What a wonderful world us nudist enjoy among ourselves.

Jim &Ruth has asked Tonya and I to keep everyone informed and to tell all nudist around the country that the "SWALLOWS" will be back as soon as possible for ALL NUDISTS TO ENJOY!!!!

Many of you know Val who has worked tireless hours with the AANR youth camps I have some news to share with you. Val and Kathy (whom just got married a little over a month ago) were the only couple who wouldn't leave Swallows with just the shirt on there back. Kathy told Val she wouldn't leave without packing her clothes in the car because she must have clothes to work in the non-nudist world. Val, Kathy, Jim & Ruth put today's events behind them and went to share a pizza among the four.

Jim & Ruth are back in a hotel for tonight but will return to the Swallow

Subject: AANR FIRE UPDATE

To: All AANR Clubs
From: Erich E. Schuttauf, JD Executive Director
Date: October 29, 2003
Re: Fires which have devastated California, impacting AANR members and clubs and how we can help

I want to thank the many clubs and members who have contacted the American Association for Nude Recreation office in Kissimmee with status reports about the effect of the fires currently devastating much of Southern California and which have threatened, even severely damaged, several American Association for Nude Recreation parks.

This update is to apprise you of their status from what we have been able to determine, as well as how each of us can most help those fellow nudists who have lost so much.

Swallows Resort, El Cajon California -- Yesterday Jim and Ruth Schafer returned to Swallows to find that much of the property had been destroyed. From what we understand, a couple of residents' units, the restaurant building, and much of the club house remain intact. Most of the remaining fences, outbuildings, and about 60 residence units, were either burned or melted by the high temperatures.

The Schafers are already in the process of rebuilding their fence, restoring electrical power and phone service, and otherwise putting things back together. In typical selfless fashion for those who know the Schafers, they are most concerned for the people who had units, many of whom made their homes there.

Deer Park Club, Devore, California - miraculously escaped being completely destroyed by curtains of fire . They did lose their water storage and are without potable water.
De Anza Springs - Without electricity but not in path of fire.
Glen Eden - continues to be showered with ash from the fires. Smoke is thick in the air, but without immediate fire danger to the club.
Olive Dell - Has some ash blowing around but is in no immediate danger.

What we can do - First and foremost, we can honor these folks with our thoughts and prayers. We can also assist the many at Swallows who were burned out of their homes-- often evacuating with nothing but clothes on their back-- by sending care "packages"-- or care letters actually. Because of shipping costs and storage space constraints and with Walmart, Target, and K-Mart stores operating within a reasonable drive, we are recommending that you send gift cards from those stores as well as pre-paid phone cards which will enable people to call friends and loved ones. Increments of about $20 will help the Schafers to make periodic distributions as needed.

Because United Parcel Service (UPS) appears to be successfully serving the area, we are recommending that you use them. Please address letters packages to:
Swallows Sun Island Club
1631 Harbison Canyon Road
El Cajon, Ca 92109

AANR is also currently reviewing other ways to lend assistance to all our clubs as they recover, repair, and rebuild. We will keep you apprised of developments on these further ways to lend a hand to those in our AANR family.

rained a little in fire area yesterday pm. forecast for more in some of devastated areas. contact in s.d. area says no substantial rain there in about 6 months, drought conditions 3-4 years. so while things may be better, think folks should pray for a good rainy season, as well as people and resorts as well.

What is the latest on the resorts affected deeply by the recent wildfires? Have they gotten electricity/phones back yet? I went ahead and donated a bunch of clothes I don't wear anymore to goodwill. They had a special area aside for the victims of the California wildfires. Have they had any problems with mudslides since? What I understood, that was going to be a major problem when the rains started back.

CoolNude72,

Most affected areas have power restored to them and it appears that phone service has returned to most of the areas also.

Mud slides are a concern but we haven't had a consistant down pour yet. We've had a couple of cells move through this past week and dropped rain in excess of 5 inches in just a few hours in someplaces, but it did not affect the mountain and foothill areas enough to cause problems yet.

Most emergency agencies, fire departments, are gearing up for the rain and mud slides if they should occur. We know our trouble areas and have begun communication with homeowners to begin sand bagging those areas in anticipation of worst case scenerios.

Another process already in the works is the re-seeding of those burned foothill areas. Natural vegetation seed and grass seed is dropped from helicopters soon after the fires have been extinguished to help minimize the erosion. But if there is lots of rain fall, it washes the seed away.
