I recently spent a few days at the Mai Tai Resort near Port Douglas, an hour or so north of Cairns. The owners, Anthony (British) and Andre (raised in Germany, but of Moroccan and Belgian parentage) have fashioned a small (4 rooms) B&B (not truly a 'resort') a short distance off the Captain Cook Highway between Port Douglas and Mossman. The decor, described as Balinese, is over-the-top gaudy and great fun. Officially, only the pool area is clothing-optional, although nobody objected when I didn't towel up to run back to our room for more sunscreen. Everyone dressed for breakfast.
Andre and Anthony are considerate hosts. Mai Tai is a bit off the beaten path, but they can steer you to stores and good (by Queensland standards) restaurants in the nearby towns. The resort's location makes it a good starting point for excursions to the Daintree Rain Forest or the Great Barrier Reef.
I originally intended to stay at the White Cockatoo, but certain unsettling posts, on this forum and elsewhere, led me, perhaps unfairly, to seek other accommodations. As it turned out, the Mai Tai suited our needs perfectly. Other than the long, steep, and terrifying driveway, I can recommend the Mai Tai Resort without hesitation.
