I had a natural attraction to the idea of nudism ever since I first heard about it. However, I was raised in a typically conservative Southern household. However again, I was educated enough to be skeptical about everything.
In time, my attachment to my Southern conservative values faded. But my skepticism about nudism did not. Even when I found myself in Germany in the saunas, naked and unashamed with strangers and friends alike, I brought this critical view to bear upon my experiences. I found it to be physically relaxing and emotionally freeing. At the same time, I felt that there was an element of the population in those places that was there only to sexually prey upon others.
In time, I grew to accept European nudist activities for what they are. The predatory people were a minority that was strongly discouraged, and often expelled. But I held my skepticism about the ability of Americans to hold to the purity and nonchalance of the European view of the nude body.
All that was defeated by a few trips to Star Ranch, near Austin, TX. This is a place for families and friends. The people who run it are very intelligent and discriminating. The people who live there or go whenever they can comprise a family that is not always happy, but always close. They have their squabbles like any group of people who care about each other, but the feeling of belonging, once you have shown your intentions to be pure, is overwhelming.
It is definitely the worst place for anyone with an idea of making victims of vulnerable people to visit. But it is the best place that I've found in three continents to find a sense of belonging and acceptance, if you are a good and decent person-- clothed or unclothed.
To get to the basics, there's not much to separate Star Ranch from any other place. They have a nice, big outdoor pool. They have a good-sized indoor pool and a jacuzzi big enough for 8 people. The grounds are huge and lovely. But it's the people that make it special.
