I thought other nudists might find this interesting. I know naturists are excepting of every body-type and don't really care what anyone else looks like, but I suspect all of us will always care (at least a little) about how we look like. I just had an interesting experience . . .

I once heard that every traditional artist should draw 6 things. 1) a plant. 2) an animal. 3) architecture. 4) a female nude. 5) a male nude. 6) a self-portrait.

Recently, I decided to kill two birds with one stone. I was going to wait until I was in better shape, but one day when I was feeling particularly happy about who I am I thought, "Why not do it now? Why not do an honest portrait and show the human body less-than-perfect such as the kind of body most of us have?"

http://www.propguy.ms11.net/LessThanPerfectdA.jpg (not work safe, but I hope that's not much of an issue. It's just an artistic nude drawing.)

And an odd thing happened. The more time I spent working on it, the more I was forced to look at the reference photo objectively. After a while, as I started liking the way the drawing was looking, I started liking the way I looked! I even had a thought that I won't repeat, here, but suffice it to say that I've never felt that way about myself in my life.

Before I started this project, I would have rated my body as about a 5. Now, I'd go as high as 8, maybe 8.5!
I highly recommend that everyone draw or paint a self-portrait nude, even if you never show it to anyone (and therefore it doesn't matter what your artistic skills are). Try it. You can burn it when you're done, but I guarantee you'll see yourself differently.

Anyway, the reason I was trying to get into shape is because I'm going to be visiting a nude beach later this summer (economics have changed, so I don't know which one, but I'll find one). I was hoping to have all the weight off by then. But now, even if I don't succeed in getting 100% of the way there, I'm now confident that no matter where I am, I'll be totally comfortable in my own skin when I get there.

Seriously. Grab those pencils. You'll love yourself more than ever.

I have an interview next week about being a model for the Life Drawing class. I was wondering what kind of pay goes along with the modeling. I am not doing it for the money, more for the experience and to say "been there done it."

Nice work, Phydeau, and nice attitude.

It's been a few years since I worked as a professional life model, but I enjoyed it immensely and would rate it as one of the most positive experiences of my life. I have a very average body with many imperfections, but whenever I was posing I felt beautiful and appreciated. It was simply wonderful.

I'm glad you got a taste of that.

Annie

Thank you, Annie.

There was another part of this that I hadn't yet experienced when I made the original post. I posted this drawing to a few places where people I know (some of whom are long-term dear friends) would see it. I was extremely nervous of the reactions I might get. Surprisingly, nobody seemed to be particularly affected in any negative way by seeing me nude. They all simply said they liked the drawing and were happy with my inner growth. So I got a little bonus to feeling good about myself.

I hadn't really considered what the modeling aspect was going to be like. I'm glad you've had a taste of that.

I had an artist reach me and asked me to shoot her so that she could see what it was like to be a subject so that she could be a better artist. She turned out to be a tremendous subject and I heard from her that it opened her eyes.

I tell a lot of so-called photographers who want to be Playboy type shooters to do the same and they all cringe at the idea of being undressed in front of a camera. Personally, it does not bother me but I am not big into being photographed.

Being a subject does help you tremendously to be to photographer, and probably to be an artist.

No shame

I like your attitude towards making people comfortable with themselves. That's not bad work (Depending on the model's taste, I'd shy away from the Photoshop obfuscation, but if it makes them comfortable, that's great). Nice lighting, and good work getting the right poses.

But yeah. Seeing yourself objectively from another point of view is literally an out-of-body experience. There's no better way to describe it.

P.S. I like how you've asked some of those photographers to put their money where their mouth is. ;)

I'm Irish. I won't forget the sunscreen. I'm looking for SPF 2000. Any suggestions?
