The general attitude on this site - which I share - is that Nudism/Naturism and Swinging are not the same thing, and for the most part nudism is favored over swinging. But it must be acknowledged that there is at least some overlap between the two schools of thought. This article, in GQ of all places, is a cut above the typical "Intrepid Reporter Among the Weirdos" snicker-fest we tend to find in the mainstream media. It deals with, among other things, why non-swinger nudists might - or might NOT - want to visit a swinger resort. The NSFW opening illustration is hilariously exaggerated, but it also reflects some of the activities I witnessed a few years ago at The Resort Not To Be Named in Florida.

Bill, well said. I have not seen the article and don't know these places but the same sort of thing happens out here. I've seen many people at nude beaches near me that are clearly there to try to pick up or do pick up, they have sex in the dunes and then move on. In principle I don't care that they are seeking casual sex but it does bother me that they do it under the pretence of being nudists and yes I believe it does get these beaches a bad name. I think it keeps some people away as they see these beaches as seedy or promiscuous. It was a significant challenge out here years ago to get these beaches declared as legal CO and complaints about this sort of activity could jeopardise that rating as occasionally there are complaints to the police. I better get off my soap box, it's got the wobbles. Cheers, SBN.

Well said Bill!

I agree completely, again, with Bill!

Also have to chime in and say that what Doc witnessed at the resort, not being named, in FL ... The Prof and I witnessed the same and haven't been back since ... and never will.

While I've still got my soapbox...

Another thing that annoys me about articles like this. You'll notice that at the beginning of the second paragraph the author points out that he is not a nudist, so as to distance himself from those unsavory folks who get naked among others. He wants everyone to know that he is normal while nudists may not be.

Why is it that journalists with no experience with nudism, a bias against it, and very little interest in learning why people enjoy it think they can spend a few hours to a few days gawking at naked people, and then explain it to the ignorant masses?

You wouldn't expect someone who knows nothing about baseball to watch one game, speak to a few fans and players, and then know enough about it to explain it to others who are ignorant about the game. These types of articles are not really informative; they just titillate the uninformed. Why do these know-nothings think they can explain what they don't really understand to others? This is not journalism.

Not lewd, not crude, just nude.

Nudists are everywhere, but they're hard to identify with their clothes on.

I also agree with Bill.

What can we expect from a journalist that visits a place like Desire Pearl ... This article begins with the reader thinking he visited a "nudist resort" but in fact, it is a swingers resort where sexual activity is the norm. If he was looking for what really happens in a nudist resort, he could have gone down the road a short way and visit Hidden Beach but that wouldn't have given him the spice his article needed.

Seems to me, this article gave us real nudists another sock in the gut.

I agree with Bill, in that more people are probably more likely to associate the nudist lifestyle with swinging than what most of us believe. In my opinion, for what it is worth, swinging makes it more difficult for just the simple clothes-free lifestyle to become more acceptable by mainstream society.

I would guess that many more people engage in promiscuous sexual activity than social nudity. Much of the continual association of nudity with promiscuity is probably because a large part of the public is engaged in promiscuity and doesn't mind getting naked while doing so. They assume that other naked people must be "like me."

On the other side, few nudists are prudes either. It all sounds like a lot of complaining about normal human behavior that is officially taboo but everyone does it.

Just my $.02

This raises an issue that really bothers me. I consider myself a live-and-let-live kind of guy, but only if others aren't interfering with my interests. In an ideal world swingers behavior wouldn't affect me, but because they masquerade as, or are thought of as, nudists our reputation gets tarnished by their lascivious behavior.

Since there seems to be no practical way to avoid conflating nudism with swinging I've got to condemn swinging. I oppose even those swingers who sometimes go to nude venues and behave as AANR dictates, because their swinging diminishes my reputation. How do we get them to clean up their act?
