Posted - 12/11/2008 : 04:37:11 AM The little I have seen or heard about this "event", is it resembles an opportunity for exhibitionists to show what they ate for breakfast to a bunch of sad voyeurs armed with cameras.Anyone studying for a gyne exam would find the photographs graphic enough to be helpful. Sadly the event does not help the nudist cause or do us real nudists any favours. |

Posted - 06/13/2004 : 11:40:42 PM the sad thing, vealj, is that the general public does not make the distinction between aanr/tns/nnc sanctioned clubs and those which are not. |

As I recall history in the late 1980s...
Dick Drost's faux-nudist atrocity Naked City used to hold a similar pageant. When Naked City closed down, Ponderosa saw the opportunity to hold Nudes-a-Poppin and make money. Many ASA members protested, and Ponderosa either quit or was ejected from ASA, rather than stop holding the events.
If anybody has any support of or corrections to my memory, please let me know!
Dan,
To my knowledge Ponderosa has never been an ASA chartered club. They began their contests during and after Dick Drost's contests and continued them after he left Indiana to start a "Naked City" on the west coast.
ASA members have always protested or made comments about these contests to the ASA office, however, there is nothing ASA (or now AANR) can do about it since they are independent of AANR. BTW, Naked City is still there only now it is Sun Aura Club and it isn't affiliated with AANR that I know of either.

Posted - 05/29/2004 : 03:25:04 AM That is what I was eluding to Gary, and that is how Vealj responded. For a lot of people, their only contact with nudity is "Nudes A Poppin", so they think all nudists, or nudist clubs are that way.

Posted - 05/28/2004 : 09:41:31 AM So if Poderosa is getting a great deal of publicity especially for "nudes a poppin"a great majority of people who watch the coverage on TV or in mainstream media are equating that event with normal nudist activities..thats not good PR |

Posted - 05/28/2004 : 03:17:45 AM There was HBO documentary once about nudist clubs, and of course they got it all wrong. A lot of the footage was shot at Ponderosa. I think at that time they had the Miss or Ms Nude Universe contest. She was actually a porn star and a lot of the footage was her taking pictures with guys in the open leg posture. It seems like you hear more and more about nudes a poppin, and less about your ever day nudist club.

Other than the dates of Nudes a poppin...what's the Ponderosa like? What's the nudist climate...same as the rest?, a little more on the adult oriented side?, just curious how this place functions on regular days. |

Vealj do the owners of Ponderosa understand what type of publicity they are giving nudism, or do they care?
The owners of Ponderosa are a single family and they have always been an independent lot. They don't really give much thought to what the national movement cares or thinks about.
Mostly they began the contests because the nudist club down the road (which was called Naked City at the time) was having outstanding success with their nude pageants. They were making large amounts of money and garnering national publicity too so Ponderosa felt they could do the same.
To be fair, most of the nudist clubs in the country at that time were also conducting nude "beauty" pageants only they called them "Royalty" contests and they weren't open to the public.
I think the nudist movement has pretty much left the meat parades behind as it has grown up over the past decades. Now if they could just inform the Miss America and Miss Universe contests that they're out of date, maybe the textilers will realize meat parades are just that and move on too.

Interesting history of this event. I can see why they may have trouble turning away 40-50K for such an event, that's alot of $$ for a club.
Too bad they can't attract more members so this type of event doesn't have to take place.
Thanks for the information. |

Soooooo.....Ponderosa is a nudist club? Does the club then rent itself out to this event each year?
... Is Ponderosa in any way affiliated with either AANR or TNS? I could probably go into their website and see.... ... Anyone here ever been there recently and have any info on the club or why they allow this event.
Yes, Fireprof, Ponderosa is a nudist club. They throw the Nudes-a-Poppin event themselves to raise money for the club - they don't rent the club out. They probably pull in 40-50,000.00 per event. I think they do one or two a year. The rest of the time the club is a nudist club with about 250 members with trailers on site.
Ponderosa has never been affiliated with AANR or TNS by choice. The used to have their own organization they tried (United Nudist Congress) as an answer to the ASA and NNC but it never took off beyond Ponderosa.
The Nudes-a-Poppin event evolved from an innocent enough beginning. The owners were attempting to introduce the general public to nudism and at the same time raise money to help defray raising club dues for the members. I was at the original brainstorming sessions where we came up with the idea for a nude beauty pageant open to the public. The first two events were held using women club members in an effort to demonstrate real nudism. It was hoped the spectators would stay and try out the facilities afterwards. Unfortunately the only folks who chose to visit were voyeur types that wanted pics of naked women. The women club members wouldn't enter the pageant after that so the owner made a deal with a strip club promoter to get girls from the strip clubs as contestants and the Nudes-a-Poppin events evolved from that.
