With all of the earthquakes happening recently just as the one in Chile today, do you ever think about what it would be like to get caught in some type of natural disaster nude and not be able to get your clothes on.
To me this is always a thought in the back of my mind because my wife is always telling me if we have a fire in the middle of the night my first job of any is to get her dressed.

We got caught in a small Hurricane in Florida once, Mrs. Diger got up in the middle of the night and put her clothes on just incase.

I have, and it turns out my response is just a little different than my army days.
We had a tornado warning last year in the middle of the night. I just sat up, threw on my boots before my eyes were open, and then grabbed my pants on the way down to the basement. Old habits die hard.

Here's the thing with fires in the home.
Most deadly fires usually happen at night.
Some deaths each year, due to fires, are from those that run back into the house for something...belongings or pets. The smoke is usually what kills people, not the fire itself.
The "most" important thing to do is to "get out and stay out," that is what we teach the young kids in school and it's good advice for adults.
Worry less about being naked and worry more about being alive!
With that..... we both have our robes and slippers near the bed each night. It kills two birds with one stone. Cover and warmth...just in case. Robes are mostly for the cold weather months and not so much being caught naked outside!
During warmer weather months...lighter robes and flip flops!
We live in Earthquake country! This is also why we usually have something to cover ourselves and some sort of shoe near the bed. When our grandkids come over to stay...they are taught the same thing...although...they all still sleep in pj's.

Clothed or not, I've heard it's best to stay very low and crawl if necessary to the door. The heat and smoke are much, much worse near the top of the wall than near the bottom.
I used to worry about being caught without clothes, but now I don't think it would be an issue. Certainly not in comparison with the consequences if everone doesn't make it out. I'm with Fireprof on that.

FortunatelY i have never been caught in a house fire or other disaster and hope to keep it that way. However if I ever was my first concern would be to make sure that myself and the people I love make it out alive. What I am or am not wearing is very low on my list of worries. My biggest worry about clothes would of course be if it happened to be winter time in which case being outside in the cold without clothes could be as problem but still a whole lot better than being dead or trapped.

Absolutely correct. Been there and lived to report it, but I had to break a door to get out, in 1991.

I grew up in a small town in the midwest, there was a fire in a store with 3 apartments above it, as you can imagine in a small town a crowd gathered fast, and out of the smoke comes this young couple running out the door, naked as the day they were born, stop in the street and hugged each other, it took a few minutes for them to think about being naked, and about that time we were taking off our shirts to give something to cover up with, and some one found a blanket. So to me its more about survival then what I am wearing.

One of my surgery professors ended his series of lectures on burn treatment with the following advice. "If you're in a burning building, run out. If you find you're burned on more than 50% of your body, run back in."

It's best to have a small bag kit filled with clothes inside hanged at every bedroom in the house.Not only that as well right beside the window in case there's a fire and you need to get out.That what we have done in our house hanged a baggy kit filled with clothes both for warm and cold weather in case for any reason one must get out of the house.

That's a good idea Ricki. I usually have a pair of pants & shirt sitting on a little stool in my bedroom, so I could always just grab that. Otherwise, if I'm running out the front door, I have a pair of sweat pants in the front closet, as well as many jackets there, so I could grab something just in case. I would try my best not to run out into the backyard as I keep the gate locked, and searching for the key inside the house would take longer than grabbing some clothes. I have a relatively small backyard, so going out front would be much more suitable in case of emergency.

I thought everybody kept a "Bug-Out-Bag" packed with clothes and other necessary items in case of an emergency. Maybe that's just a California thing. Here, earthquakes, wildfires, and bad Mexican food can all lead to sudden evacuations, and it's good to be prepared!
