Apollo Beach is a wonderful Beach, however I know its been quite controversial, especially in regards the problems at Playalinda They were requesting folks not to spend money in Brevard County. I guess everyone was encouraged to spend their money for supplies etc in Volusia county and to be very vocal with the merchants why they were doing this. Has the situation there improved?

I have been attending Apollo Beach at the north end of the Canaveral National Seashore for about 12 years. At this time, there is absolutely no controversy going on at Apollo. The issue about not supporting commercial enterprises at the south end of Canaveral/Playalinda, is old news and no longer valid.

Apollo Beach has been and remains a premier experience for nudists/naturists. The park's priority is the support of the flora and fauna found in abundance there. Opportunities to enjoy a beach experience are intentionally limited in order to support this biological mission of the park. In a signed, but unofficial agreement with the current Canaveral park director, we limit our clothing optional, beach recreational activities to the area south of parking lot/beach crossover number 5. All the parking lots have limited spaces and it's a toss up as to if you will find a legal parking spot if you do visit the park. You must obey the spped limit-35 MPH, not "create" a parking spot and not "hover" until a parking spot opens, not walk in the dune area and definately not engage in any unlawful conduct, else you will incur the wrath of and a sure violation ticket (or arrest) from the otherwise friendly ranger staff. Apollo is a great place to go out for the day to enjoy yourself with friends, family or as a single.

Apollo has a relatively flat beach, no rocks or other hazards in the water and the water clarity and quality is excellent. There are no lifeguards, you should not swim alone and you must watch out for jelly fish and the occasional shark. The best way to avoid sharks is to keep an eye out for schools of bait fish and avoid those areas.

Sailor, I've heard that it's still a nice, viable option to enjoy.

Sailor,

My wife and I spent last year in Florida and visited Apollo and Playalinda (the nude area is at the end of the road in both cases) almost weekly. Apollo Beach is fairly nice, but is definitely the lesser of the two, in my opinion, for a number of reasons. Here are my comments:

1. Apollo is nice, but it had a very high male-to-female ratio. We usually went on Fridays to spend most of the day, and more often than not there were 0-3 women present, on average. That bothered my wife. Playalinda has a much better ratio, and the couples there are generally younger and more active. Apollo, as you know, borders a long stretch of shorline condo towers, and the few couples that show up at the nude beach are usually (not always) retirees who cluster together and keep mostly to themselves.

2. There are a number of gay folks using the beach as a place to meet and engage in sex acts. Yes, the park rangers have been cracking down on that. Once in a while, you might see a guy or two cruising the shoreline and openly checking out other guys (even if you are with your obviously female spouse, I found), and if you are alone they might make a certain gesture to see if you are also gay and interested. You will not mistake the gesture. Just look the other way. I was never actually approached there, even when alone. At Playalinda, however, this type of thing was never an issue, in my experience. I never saw anything overt.

3. Parking is woefully inadequate for a one-mile stretch of beach at Apollo. If you want to park, arrive before or at sunrise, even on Thursdays and Fridays (when the weather is nice). The parking problem is exacerbated by the cadre of clothed fishermen who take up precious parking spaces and then fish just outside of the nude area. Considering that there are four other beaches to fish from, not to mention the length of intercoastal waterway across the road, that is rotten. Nothing, apparently, can be done about it. Often it takes less time to park at beach #4 and walk two miles (approximately) down to #5, lugging your things, rather than wait and wait for a nearby parking space that may or may not materialize. At Playalinda, however, the beach seems to be twice as long and the available parking must be more than double what is at Apollo. We never had trouble parking at Playalinda, even on weekends.

4. On several occasions, groups of clothed senior-citizen gawkers suddenly and inexplicably appeared on Apollo Beach and cruised up and down the water's edge. Sometimes we would also find them standing on the crossover/boardwalk openly peering down the beach through binoculars. This also bothered my wife. We never experienced anything like that at Playalinda.

5. Apollo just seems small after you've been to Playalinda. As I mentioned earlier, Playalinda must be about twice as big. With more room and better parking, there are also many more people at Playalinda, giving it a happening feel. Near the end of summer, there were families there (something we never saw at Apollo), and folks were extending past the crossover partway onto the textile beach directly to the south. (As an aside, there really is no good reason for the nude beach to be restricted to #5 at Apollo. The beach immediately to the north, #4, is about two miles long, but the half of it closer to #5 is rarely used. It would be a simple thing to expand the parking at #5 and also open up half of #4 to nude sunbathing , but this has not happened. Very strange.)

6. Sooner or later, someone will say, "But nude sunbathing is only LEGAL at Apollo." This is technically correct, for now. Local police (not park rangers) at Playalinda ticketed some nude sunbathers a while back (a year or two), generating a swift backlash. Not only was there a hue and cry, but there was a boycott of local businesses and a lawsuit. The lawsuit is pending, the plaintiffs are expected to win, and local police have backed off. Interestingly, both the attitude and enforcement hav

Earlier I mentioned sunrise at Apollo Beach. Here is a photo I took in July.

(Sorry. I keep getting an error message that says "page not found.")

Sea foam thank you very much for the information. We are staying close to apollo so we will probally go their. My wife does not go nude or topless and hopes the parking lot at #5 is full so than we go to #4 and I wear a suit. Makes her happy.

Sea Foam -- interesting report. I've never been to Apollo, but many times to Playalinda. Have written at this site previously about it being my favorite nude beach among all I've been to either here or in Europe. It's the miles and miles of deserted shoreline that you just can't find anywhere else. One problem at Playalinda, especially after 9/11, is that they used to close all the beaches to the public a week before and for a few days after a shuttle launch. This hasn't been an issue since all the shuttles were grounded, but someday will be again. Eric

I go to Apollo when my work takes me to Orlando if I get the time. I get there in the afternoon and have not found lot 5 full at that time of day. I miss the sunrise, but I miss the busy time of day, too. The last time there I walked for 1 hour south on the beach without seeing many people.I could see the Vehicle Assembly building all the way down. I walked back and didn't see anyone until I got back to the crossover to the parking lot.

you go through New Smyrna Beach to get to Appolo beach which is also park lot # 5 of the Canaveral National Seashore which is on Turtle Mound rd. Just got back from their 3 week ago and had a great time. Did not see a ranger all week. But did have trouble getting a parking place on the weekends.

For Playalinda, check out the Central Florida Naturist's website. I don't know the URL, but Google should have it. Actually, come to think about it, you get off 95 at the Titusville exit and just keep driving east. After you go into the Canaveral Nat'l Seashore area, keep driving east until you get to parking area 13. If you're going on a weekend, better get there early. The nude area is north of the crossover. Say Hi to the folks from Central Florida Naturists and donate some money to help their legal expenses in keeping the beach clothing optional. Enjoy!!

For appolo beach get off 95 at New Smyrna beach and head east until you get to the ocean than go south. the road ends at the Canaveral Nat'l seashore. Once their keep going to lot #5 south of 5 is the nude area. Peaople told me in the summer be thier by 6:00am. Some drop off their stuff at #5 then park at #4 and walk or hitch hike back about 2 miles.

For Playalynda, You must now drive to Oak Hill (I Believe) because the bridge is out in Titusville, approx. 40 mile detour
