The piece Gene created with the background and frame ended up with the name Katalina, which is very similar to the
name of the person who posed for the original piece. Carol said, "You know it's not her. That's not her head, and of
course not her hair." "Not her boobs, either," Gene interjects. "It's just parts of her." This would make this piece a derivative work from the original person's body mold. "It's actually a combination of a casting and a sculpture. I had to sculpt some of it, and some was cast. The face is that of a mannequine," explains Gene. The finish for the first Katalina series is a deep metallic copper color. "If I have a special request, I can make it in any color." Is it just a choice of colors, or are other textures offered for this piece? "You could put different textures on there, but I can't imagine anybody wanting to mess that up with a texture." Carol adds, "Because he tried the gold foil, and it was nasty, it didn't look good." There is one attractive piece with a speckled painted color and some surface cracking effects, hanging in Gene's garage on display. "That's the marbled effect. Then we have the antique effect, and so on."
Could you do the marbled effect on a Katalina? "Uh, no. No, not really because those cracks are in the mold, and my mold doesn't have that, those cracks in there. My aim is to get rid of all the cracks!" he laughs.
We photographed the first Katalina ever produced while it sat in Gene's living room, not hanging, but leaning against a wall. Katalina no.2 was at this time sitting on a work table in Gene's garage. We asked if they were exactly the same mold, or modified at all. "They're the same mold, with the exception is the frame is painted a different color," Gene explained. Both pieces of Katalina are painted in a deep copper, but the frame on Katalina no.1 is painted in a metallic gold, with Katalina no.2 featuring a copper frame. Being anatomically correct, the Katalina piece might not be suitable for every art collector. "It depends on where you live, and what your taste in art is. Some people won't want a vagina showing. Some people want the vagina showing. So, I would think, uh, lifestylers would be fine with it, unless they have kids, you know," he laughs. "Usually, though, the main problem with my molds going out of here is children. Because-- they are real. So a lot of people won't get molded because they have kids around the house, even though they want the mold." Where could you hang one of Gene's body molds, besides on the wall of a game room or other place in the house? "Well, the ones I'm making now, being fiberglass, that's the same thing you make a boat out of. You can put it anywhere." We asked if that included a covered porch, or someplace similar outdoors? "You can have that in the rain, it wouldn't hurt it." Could you use it on a boat, in high humidity conditions? "Yes, if you really wanted to. It would be excellent for hanging in a boat, because it doesn't weigh much. And it's very durable. A motorhome would be very good to hang it in, because there's no weight involved.
