When someone has a custom piece done, there are a variety of surfaces and textures available. Gene explained, "Yeah,
they have different finishes, we do texture finish, antique finish, smooth finish, paint jobs, basically any color
you want. Natural skin is a popular color, and copper and pearl white are the other popular colors. I've made red
ones before. I made one of red. Cindy and Dave-- hers is red, she likes red, their house is red. It
came out good."
How much do the pieces weigh when they are finished? "If it's a full frontal, they weigh about 35-- probably 35 pounds." And this type of piece can be shipped anywhere? "Well, I haven't shipped out of the United States, so it really costs like two hundred, just to ship it in the United States. I have to build a wooden crate, with lots and lots of bubble wrap. And then the weight and size runs it up there, and it's about two hundred dollars to ship for them." Once the technique was perfected, Gene worked on designing a body mold that could cast multiple pieces. "Well, you still make the original mold the same way, and then I incorporate it into a background and a frame, Then you make a rubber mold from that. And from the rubber mold you can reproduce whatever you had to start with." This ends up being a piece you can hang flat on the wall, and weighs much less. Gene says, "I wouldn't think it weighs ten pounds. In between 10 and 20 pounds, it's really light." That means this piece, being flatter and lighter, is going to be a lot easier to ship. "Oh, yeah. I haven't even measured that. I have to do the numbers on UPS to see what it would cost." Could you ship it to Europe, if you needed to? "Oh, yeah, those could ship anywhere. Those will go anywhere. I don't have to sweat bullets that it'll get broken if they throw it a little bit. You know, whereas the extra weight of the piece in the wooden box, they throw that, something's gonna give. I don't care how good you wrap it, if you throw it, the weight of that will cause it to damage itself. I mean I actually had one, this is in a wooden crate, they said, 'Oh, it wasn't packed good enough.' Well hell, they dropped it. I don't know what they dropped it from, but the legs went through the plywood from the inside. So you know, it wasn't a matter of packaging, that baby got dropped from a long ways.
