Carol explained how the process developed. "And what he was using was suntan lotion, to pull the mold loose. And
this suntan lotion did not work, because it was extremely painful." "I didn't feel a thing," Gene said. It was
starting to sound like we were talking Brazilian wax hair removal at this point. "And then we progressed to the
vaseline," said Carol. "Vaseline works well," he added. "More hair, more vaseline. Plaster and cheesecloth, and lots
of vaseline."
How did he get that incredible detail in his pieces? "Oh, well, plaster replicates whatever it goes over, so, if you got a bump here, the plaster has a bump." Does Gene get more requests for nude pieces than anything else? "They're all nude pieces, I don't do anything but nude pieces." As we researched for this article on the internet for this type of art, looking under body casting and similar terms, other people's work seemed not nearly as detailed and artistic. Many of them have bikinis molded into the piece, and are not technically nudes. "Hmm, I guess you can go buy a mannequin if that's what you wanted," Gene said with a laugh. Carol added, "Then, if there's an impurity in the body, then he makes that go away, he sands it down or builds it up." "Aww, I'm a plaster surgeon, I fix everybody," said Gene with a laugh. Does Gene mold the faces often? "No, most girls won't do a face, because they're claustrophobic. So we've done, I guess, maybe five faces. It's just easier to make my own face, and incorporate it into the mold. Because you can't get a girl to smile or make a decent face under the plaster at all. It's all spooky when they come out, you know, not happy looking." Gene describes the process, similar to brazilian wax hair removal, but with more vaseline.
