"Actually he started out, he was going to have a mermaid coming out of the wall, in the bathroom", explained Carol,
as she begins the story of her not-yet-famous husband and body casting artist. "That's because I painted the
bathroom underwater", added Gene. "He painted the bathroom wall and underwater scene," Carol continued, "and he was
going to have a mermaid coming out of the wall. And in order to have the mermaid coming out of the wall, he needed a
bust, a mold. So he started doing the bust mold. So people started asking, if he did a bust mold, would he do a butt
mold? So he went from the bust, and then the butt molds. And then from there, people started asking, could he do..."
Gene interrupts, "No, I just started practicing on girls. My daughter-in-law I practiced on." "This is true," said
Carol. "The very first one was our daughter. And so he did, you know, a coarse one. And it has just grown from
there. It's been almost three years now." "I taught myself, had no clue what to do," said Gene. "I knew someone did
it over at Paradise (Lakes Resort), but I wasn't interested in learning from him, and then competing against him, so
I just taught myself."
Carol added, "Actually what he started doing with the plaster, he was making 'pepper people'. And he had little
pepper people and he'd put them in the kiln and he was going to make a whole family of pepper people." "Yeah, that
was one idea," said Gene.
What did he originally start with for materials, how did he know what to work with? "Well, it was plaster and
cheesecloth, you can look on the internet, you can see the guys with plaster and cheesecloth in the internet so I
just figured that's what it was. Most people use plaster bandages, I just like to use plaster and cheesecloth."
What about the commercial plaster preparations? "Yeah, plus your bandages they cost a lot more money to use, it
takes a lot longer to do, and doesn't make as strong a mold. You have to put three or four layers, or it makes dents
wherever you try to do something. It dents in, and then dents in the mold, it wrinkles. I tried doing it that way,
but I don't like it. I just like my plaster and cheesecloth."
